  9. RetroArch
  10. RetroArch is the most versatile and the most advanced emulator on the internet. It can mimic the operating system of almost any console and can be used on all computers and all Android smartphones. Advanced features include rewinding and netplay, among simple gamepad and joystick detection and customization. It is basically one emulator most gamers need and comes with a modern and appealing user interface. The emulator uses cores. Each core will run a specific console. As such, more cores equals more console emulation. Users can download all cores officially and customize the emulator according to their needs. There is no need to add that new cores can be added at any given moment.

  17. Cores
  18. RetroArch is a modular program that runs emulators and games within its framework as if they were 'plugins'.
  19. These plugins are called 'cores', and you need to install them inside RetroArch to be able to use them.
  20. These cores can also be used in other programs that implement the Libretro Application Programming Interface (API).
  21. Both Libretro and RetroArch were made by the same developers, and RetroArch serves to demonstrate Libretro's power and scope.
  22. Online updating/downloading of cores
  23. On most platforms (except game consoles and certain mobile platforms), RetroArch comes with dynamic module loading support.
  24. On these systems, you will be able to install and/or update new cores as they become available on our buildbot.
  25. To access these, go to RetroArch's main menu, select 'Online Updater', and then select 'Update Cores'.
  26. You don't need to download a new version of RetroArch in order to be able to run new or updated cores!
  27. Loading cores
  28. Once a core is installed, you can load a core by going to the Main Menu and selecting 'Load Core'. Every core that has been installed already will be shown in a list.
  29. After you have made your choice, you can then select the 'content' for that core by going to 'Load Content'. The content that is supported by the core will be shown inside the file browser.
  30. Some cores, like 2048, do not require any content in order to work. In this case, after you have loaded the core, 'Start Core' will appear inside the main menu. Select this to start the core directly.
  31. Keeping cores up-to-date
  32. The libretro core library keeps getting bigger over time, and there is always something new that gets added to our servers. So be sure to visit the 'Update Cores' section daily on RetroArch. Cores get added and/or updated constantly!
  33. If you'd like to learn more about libretro, or you are a developer interested in learning how to use it for your own projects, visit the Libretro website here.
  34. Best RetroArch Cores?
  35. So I just downloaded RetroArch, and I'd like to know which cores are the best for the following systems: NES SNES N64 Saturn 2600 Game Boy + Color (No need to tell me the best GBA core. I've had perfect experiences with mGBA)

  38. Nes Standard use: Nestopia UE Core RetroAchievements: Quicknes Core (More compatible with achievements) or FCEUMM Core (more games are compatible)
  39. Snes Standard use: BSNES Accuracy Core or BSNES Mercury Accuracy Core (Mercury is faster without sacrificing accuracy). RetroAchievements: Snes9x 2010 Core
  40. Gameboy + Color Standard and RetroAchievement use: Gambatte Core. Now there is a new core called Sameboy and according to the website its extremely accurate so u can try that out if getting achievements aren't ur thing.
  41. I don't use any of the others. If u r interested, There is now Dolphin Core for Gamecube and Wii, VBA-M core if u decide to change ur GBA core in the far future, however MGBA is the best for standard use and RetroAchievements, for sega consoles theres Genesis Plus GX for Standard use and picodrive for RetroAchievements and BeetlePSX for PS1.
