Maybe? I know people like my grandma were positively floored when they found out Liberace was gay. People back then seem to have been just absolute shit at picking up on who's gay and who's not, but then again I can say for certain that my own gaydar doesn't really work at all either.

I know gays used to have their own coded languages back in the day to signal each other without potentially getting assaulted. The earring thing comes to mind. Also I think I might just be really bad at picking up on flirting in general rather than not having a good gaydar.
