55. Wellman Santee (Dolph Lundgren) a former race car driver, whose livelihood is transporting exotic stolen super cars, is involved, with his partner Eddie, in shoot out, resulting in the deaths of his friend and a highway cop. Santee is framed for the cop's murder and jailed in a maximum security prison. A few months later, Santee breaks out after narrowly escaping an attempt on his life. He reaches a local diner where he steals a car, abducts the owner, Rita and flees, completely unaware that is hostage is a deputy sheriff. A massive manhunt ensues, spearheaded by Lt. Severance a tough, obessive cop. Santee leads the detective and his men on a dramatic high speed chase, from the desert wilderness to the streets of downtown Los Angeles. Santee's out to clear his name and when it comes to getting even, he's taking revenge into overdrive...
 56. A framed prison escapee unknowingly kidnaps a female cop en-route to a rendezvous with the corrupt cop who put him behind bars.
 57. Oh Dolph....what the hell was that? This movie is about a truck driver who is sentenced to 30 years in prison for shooting a police officer in a raid of the truck, but there's something about him we don't know......OK enough of the BS, Dolph plays a man framed for a crime he didn't commit and losing a friend in the process (Ken Foree of Dawn of the Dead fame). After escaping from prison he kidnaps a woman to use as a hostage, what he doesn't know is the woman is actually a rugged cop who's basically your Steven Seagal "beat up the bad guys by any means nessicary" type. The thing is, Dolph was framed by 2 crooked cops that blew away the officer Dolph was framed for killing and Ken Foree so Ivan Drago spends the whole movie lugging around Rita and plotting revenge on the crooked cops.

The reason this movie is stupid is because 1. If Sgt Scott was framed, why didn't he say something in court, after all forensics can match up the bullets fired with the guns of the crooked cops 2. She's supposed to be a cop, you would think she would have tried to escape more often than she did. I could go on and on but there are just too many holes for me to deduce logic. Here's something else, one scene Ivan Drago is up against 25 or so Chinese mobsters and takes out all of them...singlehandedly of course. The thing is every time he shot a gun he'd hit whoever he was shooting, 5 minutes later the cops surround the area and suddenly when Dolph shoots at them he can't hit anyone. Where'd his perfect aim go? Another funny thing is after Sgt Scott gets shot in the leg, he gets involved in a hell of a fist fight and starts doing karate kicks with the bad leg, landing on it like nothing was wrong with it.

The coup di grace...make it coup Disgrace is the ending where Geoffrey Ross discovers the crooked cops are the real murderers and has them AND Dolph arrested as the credits roll. We are left not knowing what happens to the cops, what happens to Dolph, the female officer...nothing.

Sorry Dolph, this was not Universal Soldier. 4 out of 10
 58. I first encountered Joshua Tree at the tender age of 14. I had taped it off Sky Movies and expected it to be just another action film, and would have enjoyed it had it been just that. But there is a very quiet tongue-in-cheek feel and a slightly ironic edge to the film that really appeals to me. Unfortunately the version I saw was sanitized by the BBFC to the point of ridiculousness.

Dolph Lundgren stars as Wellman Anthony Santee (yeah, you read that correctly) a race-car driver who is sent down for a 20-35 year stretch in the funhouse for the murder of a highway patrolman. Only he didn't do it and escapes custody in order to trap the real culprit. Along the way he kidnaps Rita Mareck (Kristian Alfonso) an off-duty police officer for the sole purpose of using her 4x4 as an escape vehicle. But Rita's natural detective abilities and curiosity make her stick around and observe the plot as it unfolds. It's fun watching her being manhandled (just as she secretly likes) by Santee, who is just the kind of genuine straight-up tough guy she's been looking for.

George Segal (doing a Groucho Marx impersonation) and Beau Starr are the crooked cops out to get Santee and spare no effort lying and sleazing their way across the desert before he exposes their corruption. The odds are against Santee, but behind the wheel of a fast car he can hit the dirt and disappear without a trace.

The action in Joshua Tree is incredible. The centerpiece scene in which Santee massacres half of China in a desert chop-shop has to be seen to be believed. It goes beyond violence and into an orgy of blood and death that very few movies manage to reach. There are also a few references to other films, most notably the "I need a shotgun" scene from The Getaway as well as the rather Hitchcockian "wrong man on the run" theme.

Joel Goldsmith provides a lovely musical score too, full of melodic atmosphere and pounding rhythms. It's never been available on CD, which is a shame.

The film itself has had a truly shocking release history. The long defunct Live Entertainment had the video rights back in the day but they changed the title to avoid confusion with the U2 music video. When the time came to release a DVD they just ported the video transfer to disc instead of giving us a proper 2.35:1 version. The rights have since been lost and the film will no doubt fall into obscurity, which is a shame. Vic Armstrong (probably THE top action man in Hollywood) never got to do a definitive Director's Cut of the film and for his maiden voyage (and so far only) as a stand-alone film director it's probably heartbreaking and very frustrating for him.

I can't say the film is perfect though. There are far too many shots of generic police cars driving through the desert. Cutting out all this dead weight would have tightened the pace considerably. I can't help but grimace every time one of these pointless cutaways pops up.

It's nearly impossible to find Joshua Tree these days, but if you do happen upon it (preferably with the shorter ending and not the horrible extended version) then it is well worth the time and money.

 60. Thus far, the action movie starring Dolph Lundgren has only been released on VHS in the UK. Unfortunately, this version had to be cut down in order to receive the BBFC 18 rating. Most of the missing scenes take place during the shootout in the warehouse. However, a few elements of the plot have also been cut out. Approx. 3 minutes are missing in the British Version. Worldwide, there are several different versions of this action movie. In the USA exist two different versions. The Unrated Version was released by Artisan on both VHS and DVD, as well as by Live Home Entertainment on Laserdisc. The R-Rating as well as the runtime of 102 minutes on the cover are wrong. The second version was released on Blu-Ray and DVD by Shout! Factory and received an R-Rating. It is either called European Version or Director's Cut. Among the bigger differences between the two versions are an additional camera scene in the Unrated Version, an alternative final fight which is more action-packed in the Unrated Version, and an alternative ending.

The release situation in Europe is not too good. In Germany as well as the UK, the movie's Director's Cut was only released in a censored version on VHS; several violent sequences were cut out. The German audience, however, can buy an uncensored DVD which unfortunately has an awful image quality and is a mixture of both US Versions. The French VHS and DVD are based on the Unrated Version, however, three plot related scenes were shortened. The Dutch Version is equal to the Unrated Version, while the Danish Version is equal to the Director's Cut. a5c7b9f00b
