  1. THE fiddlers were scraping so cheerily, O,
  2. With a one, two, three, and a one, two, three,
  3. And the children were dancing so merrily, O,
  4. All under the shade of the Christmas-tree.
  5.
  6. O, bonny the fruit on its branches which
  7. grows!
  8. And the mistletoe bough from the ceiling hung!
  9. The fiddlers they rosined their squeaking
  10. bows,
  11. And the brave little lads their partners
  12. swung.
  13.
  14. Oh, the fiddlers they played such a merry tune,
  15. With a one, two, three, and a one, two, three,
  16. And the children they blossomed like roses
  17. in June,
  18. All under the boughs of the Christmas-tree.
  19.
  20. And the fiddlers were scraping so merrily, O,
  21. With a one, two, three, and
  22. a one, two, three;
  23. And the children were dancing so cheerily, O,
  24. All under the shade of the
  25. Christmas-tree—
  26.
  27. The girl-fairy in cobweb frock.
  28. When, all of a sudden, a fairyland crew
  29. Came whirling airily into the room,
  30. As light as the fluffy balls, they flew,
  31. Which fly from the purple thistle-bloom.
  32.
  33. There were little girl-fairies in cobweb frocks
  34. All spun by spiders from golden threads,
  35. With butterfly-wings and glistening locks,
  36. And wreaths of dewdrops around their heads!
  37. The Christmas Ball boy fairy
  38. There were little boy-fairies in jewelled coats
  39. Of pansy velvet, of cost untold,
  40. With chains of daisies around their throats,
  41. And their heads all powdered with lily-gold!
  42. The boy-fairy in jewelled coat.
  43.
  44. The fiddlers they laughed till
  45. they scarce could see,
  46. And then they fiddled so cheerily, O,
  47. And the fairies and children around the tree,
  48. They all went tripping so merrily, O.
  49. The fiddlers they boxed up their fiddles all;
  50. The fairies they silently flew away;
  51. But every child at the Christmas ball
  52. Had danced with a fairy first, they say.
  53.
  54. So they told their mothers—and did not you
  55. Ever have such a lovely time at your play,
  56. My boy and my girl, that it seemed quite true
  57. That you'd played with a fairy all the day?
