  1. Adams showed him how to use two different firearms—a hand-held throwback pistol she called a “reaper,” which fired classic .44 caliber slugs, and a 50 watt plasma rifle that worked a lot like the drill he’d trained on back in the day.
  2.
  3. The difference was that the rifle fired at long range, and let out small bursts that would blow a hole through the average ship’s hull. For that reason Adams trained him how to fire the weapon without a charge in place. In theory, he’d be able to handle the thing when the time came.

  7. When they’d moved a little further away, Adams took the plasma rifle from him, and gave him a refresher. He was glad—that wasn’t the kind of weapon that allowed for mistakes. Not if you wanted to keep all of your limbs.

  9. “Short barrel, so you can maneuver,” she said. “There are three cells, all of them are charged…” She flipped the weapon around to show him the indicators. “Fires incredibly small and incredibly hot rounds of plasma. The barrel is trimonite. Anything less and it would melt by the fourth round fired. Seriously, don’t fuck around with this one. You have an automatic setting and a selective setting. Automatic, you pull the trigger and the rounds come out fast and hot until your first cell is dead. Pull the trigger again and you get the same thing until the second cell is dead.

  11. “I’ve never, ever, seen anyone pull the trigger a third time. Mostly whatever you’re aiming at is long gone before the second time the trigger gets pulled.”

  15. Piotrowicz flinched back and waited to feel the blade at the end of that thing come pounding through his brain. Instead the creature let out a surprised squeal and he felt the hot body of the thing suddenly lifted from him as Vogel smashed it sideways with the butt of her pounder.

  17. The rifle was a grunt’s wet dream. It carried ninety rounds in the magazine that fired in single shot, three round, bursts or continuous streams. It sported four slots for artillery and two locations for bayonets. Though it was fairly heavy at eleven pounds, it was also perfectly balanced for use as a hand-to-hand tool. That was where the nickname came from.
