  6. >How 2 start
  7. Find a gym; either a weightlifting gym, a crossfit box or somewhere else with bumper plates and platforms. You NEED to be able to drop the bar. Once there snatch and clean and jerk, preferably correctly (and with some type of programming, although this isn't as important as most would have you think).
  8. Coaches help a lot; without one you WILL waste lots of time learning the technique, will have to spend far more time researching, be far more careful when training and think far more at the gym.
  9. With weightlifting you cannot just go to the gym, mindlessly go through your program then leave. You have to think about every movement you do. If you know you have a technical error yet still perform the movements with this error, you're not training right. If you're not trying to spot the reason you failed/had to make an adjustment on the previous lift, you're not training right.
  10.
  11. >I can't find a gym, what do?
  12. Buy a home gym or try at some shitty one, you'll almost certainly never get anywhere near somewhat decent though.
  13.
  14. >I can (x), what should I (y)?
  15. Do (y). There is just about no reason not to, unless you are injured and cannot do a particular lift, but then if you cannot do that lift you don't need to know how much you could potentially load anyway.
  16. This applies to 1RMs and ratios between lifts.
  17. Here is a rough guide of what average ratios are.
  18. http://www.qwa.org/Resources/Calculators.aspx
  19. This is NOT set in stone and will vary massively between people who are just as strong/technically proficient.
  20. You are not a good lifter if you can clean your front squat; you're a good lifter if you can clean a lot. Remember that.

  22. >Do I need shoes, if so which ones?
  23. Yes, see http://wlshoes.com

  35. >A nice quote to think about (Ivan Abadjiev)
  36. >You must be extremely careful with the stresses you put on your athletes. You must have direct benefits from each exercise because the athlete has limited recovery capacity.
  37. ie if you can't think of a reason to do a particular movement instead of more classic lifts (full snatch/clean and jerk) or squats then don't do it.
  38. I am not saying there is no reason to do movements other than the classic lifts/squats, you (or your coach) just need some good justification for them.

  40. >Carryover to other sports
  41. http://www.higher-faster-sports.com/olympiclifts.html
  42. Basically the classic lifts (and their variations) help with other sports, but aren't necessarily worth the time spent learning to do them sufficiently well to get good results from them, and there are alternatives.
