57. In a dystopian future, Joseph Dredd, the most famous Judge (a police officer with instant field judiciary powers), is convicted for a crime he did not commit and must face his murderous counterpart.
 58. In a dystopic future, where urban areas have grown into Mega-Cities that cover entire coastal regions, the justice system has evolved to a single person invested with the power of police, judge, jury and executioner: the Judge. Among the Judges of Mega-City One, Judge Joseph Dredd is one of the best, and a particular favorite of the Head of the Council, Chief Justice Fargo. But there are evil forces at work in the Justice Department: block riots and the escape of Rico, a homicidal maniac, are only steps in a plan that ultimately lead to the sentencing of Dredd for a murder he did not commit. And Dredd must discover the secrets of his own past and survive to stop the evildoers.
 59. While not Stallone's best (see original Rocky or Cliffhanger for that) it's got good humour to fill in the patchy plot problems. For Stallone to allow another onscreen character to mock his real life speech impediment "I am the law!" was a memorable scene in an otherwise forgettable film.

It's not Stallone's fault that DREDD is not a well received film. Many comic book characters have tried to aspire as entertainment for mass audiences on the big screen and failed (First 2 Superman movies and original Batman movie not included).

Overall the film is about 2 1/2 stars out of 5.

I'll leave you with what I thought was the biggest laugh of the movie

.... in one scene Armande Assante and Stallone are described as from the same gene sequencing and both are supposed to be 2 metres tall!!! Boy did I laugh at that one, 6'7" of Stallone? I was looking for a stepladder to be mentioned in the closing credits!!!
 60. At face value, Judge Dredd isn't a particularly bad film. There's nothing that makes you want to take a sledgehammer to your television while watching it. There's nothing that will cause your brain to scream at you for exposing it to such trite.

But then, on the other hand, there's nothing that could be considered to be engrossing, or exciting, or moving, or interesting, or worthwhile. This film is what you'd expect a computer to come up with when faced with the task of turning the Judge Dredd license into a film. Everything's there, it all fits together, but it's all cold, soulless and emotionless. This film displays no passion, no joie de vivre, no emotion, no humanity. It's a product churned out of a factory with the sole purpose of earning money. It's a slap in the face to cinema as a means of human expression, and as such completely, totally worthless and deplorable.

 62. He later elaborated: From what I recall, the whole project was troubled from the beginning. The philosophy of the film was not set in stone - by that I mean "Is this going to be a serious drama or with comic overtones" like other science fiction films that were successful? So a lotta pieces just didn't fit smoothly. It was sort of like a feathered fish. Some of the design work on it was fantastic and the sets were incredibly real, even standing two feet away, but there was just no communication. I knew we were in for a long shoot when, for no explainable reason Danny Cannon, who's rather diminutive, jumped down from his director's chair and yelled to everyone within earshot, "FEAR me! Everyone should FEAR me!" then jumped back up to his chair as if nothing happened. The British crew was taking bets on his life expectancy. a5c7b9f00b
