They came from Spain sweetling, searching for the riches of an unknown continent in the name of their queen and the affixed god, or so your history books say. -INITIATE SYNTAX SHIFT- In truth they came to fight evil in a new land, the crossed ones built a fort here from which they could explore the strange new world they had uncovered, later the children of the eye wearing the robes of cenobites, build a parish and seek to push the crossed ones from their fort. But they were not the first to come here sweetling, witness the Kumeyaay, see them welcome the strange ships from the east, hear them question the strangers about their ways, watch their eyes as they see the coils of the dragon for the first time.

Settlements are established along the coast sweetling, shamen leave their tribes to reflect on the teachings of these strangers from across the sea. They practice their own magics and learn new ones taught to them by the visitors, they trade their own knowledge of the arcane in exchange for what others know and not just from the sailors sweetling, the creatures from the deep will gladly share what they know, for a price of course. From across the pacific they come sweetling, China, Japan, Indonisia, the great island kingdoms of the pacific all come to the settlements of the Kumeyaay, not just to trade with them sweetling but trade with each other. The Templar soldiers and Illuminati monks begin to record their knowledge of the arcane and the knowledge of these lost shamen and they soon amass an impressive library and even offer their recorded knowledge to others, for a price of course. The settlement grows into makeshift cities, a collection of wooden buildings along a series of docks, where the curious can find tomes from across the secret world, buyers and sellers from the deep offer to teach the inquisitive about the lost knowledge of the third age and even offer to dredge up the treasures of the ruined cities beneath the waves, for a price of course. These transactions take place in and around the water, with things not seen by the mundane world, it is the spanish Templar who give this place its name, Mercado de aguas oscuras, the dark water market.

For a time the three live in relative peace, but it is not to last sweetling, the Mexican Empire is controlled by the Templar and they confiscate the Illuminatis land and redistribute it to their soldiers, they will not tolerate this sweetling. So letters are written to their superiors in the east, Stories begin to circulate about the discovery of gold in the mountains, the children of the eye begin to plant the seeds of war, whispering into the ears of American congressmen and presidents about the riches of the west and soon the Illuminati have the army they need to drive the Templar from their shores. The Templar had recently engaged in a lengthy campaign to root out the Dragon among the Kumeyaay and the local cryptids and were unprepared when the American army arrived, the cryptids joined the children of the eye in over throwing their Templar tormentors.

The crossed ones fight bravely but are ultimately forced to flee south (though it will not save them) leaving the dark water market in the hands of the Illuminati, but the children of the eye are nothing if not practical sweetling. They see the value of the diversity in arcane commerce, so the Council is called in, a treaty is written and boundaries are established, all factions shall be welcome in the dark water market, for a price of course. They are even permitted to live in the area provided they do not challenge the authority of the Illuminati. The treaty is signed and honored and not honored (as is the case with most things your kind signs sweetling,) and a new city begins to develop, in Ealdwic, there is Darkside, in New York, there is Oubliette St. Station, in San Diego, there is Los Demonios. The cryptids and magi native to the westeren united states flock to the new territory, here they mingle with the new arrivals from across the pacific and the cities of the atlantic. Arcane traditions bleed into each other as powerful artifacts are dredged up from the sea and are sold at a premium to any who can afford it. The secret city of the west becomes a major hub for the secret world, but there is a problem sweetling.

Unlike in New York and London, there is no underground in this new city in which to hide, no cracks in which to make a home, and no forest in which to dwell. The secret world and the mundane are forced to share the same space. In order for your reality to be governed effectively, vast swaths of it must be hidden from the majority of the population, so your societies tell you. The value of Los Demonios and Mercado de aguas oscuras come from openness and the exchange of honeyed information sweetling, shutting it off from the world destroys its value, and the children of the eye hate nothing more then when their assets are devalued, a solution soon presents itself though.

It is said that the best place to hide a tree is in the forest sweetling, and the best place to hide a legend is among other legends. As time has past your kind has told itself a reassuring lie, that you have no more need of legends or stories, you have charted the world, catalogued its animals and people, you have translate their stories and reconstructed their histories, there are no more places for the darkness to hide, or so you tell those who can't hear us sweetling. In truth, the scrivnomancy of your forbares is just as potent as ever, not all the trees in the forest are trees sweetling and not all stories are just stories, but the use of stories to mask truth proves to be the solution the children of the eye require.

Time passes and the city grows strange, but the mundane and secret world blend together in new ways, sweetlings that call themselves witches intermingled with their mundane counterparts while and mundane sweetlings hear our cries for help. At the edges of this strange city are repositories of your modern legends and stories, places where the scrivnomancers can still weave their spells, places where those who mundane world do not wish to see can walk freely among their own kind, you call these places comic shops, but in this city they are so much more, they are newsstands of the secret world, a place where keened eye sweetlings can be informed of the secret worlds current events and where those who know how to ask can gain access to the shops “special collections” and the goods sold at the dark water market. These places are located at the edges of the city for a reason sweetling, they keep the secret world hidden from the mundane, along with others the world does not wish to see and for most of the year, they remain hidden at the edge of society, but not for all the year.

In 1970 a group of minor Illuminati agents after a particularly barren year sought to improve their fortunes by liquidating all of the arcane knowledge that they had collected over the years. Word spreads throughout the Mercado de aguas oscuras of the vast arcane collection that will soon be made available and Under the guise of simple shop owners, they gathered in the unassuming hotel to share their collected occult knowledge for a price of course, but they are not alone sweetling. The illuminati bring with them their collections of stories, and your societies forgotten follow. They comb the Illuminati archives for legends and stories the mundane world says they have no use for and pick out those nearest to their hearts, and unbeknownst to them another set of customers browse alongside them, those who are hidden from society, sweetlings who know how to ask to browse the Illuminati’s private collection, ask for the horror comics from the tin age, and you will be shown the rare books of magic the mundane world says are myths. The Book of Eibon and Book of Iod should be a part of every sweetlings library, while the Cthäat Aquadingen and Cultes des Goules are rarer but still not uncommon, and of course what occult library is complete without the Necronomicon or The King in Yellow. Many sweetlings answer the Illuminati's call and many more of the mundane answers as well, they succeed in liquidating their inventories, so much so that they decide to do it again, and again,  and again, and each time more answer the call and each time the gathering grows. Soon what was small gathering of those looking for stories, becomes a celebration of those same stories, scholars of the mundane world unwittingly become experts of the secret world and soon they begin to emulate it, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, sweetlings dress themselves as cryptids and other sweetlings attempt to outdo one another in effort to create the most elaborate and most realistic costumes imaginable, and in doing so create a forest in which trees can hide. The gathering becomes a place where cryptids can walk freely among the mundane world, without violating the Illuminati's laws. The unwitting scholars of the secret world complement the attendees on their costumes, how real the fur looks, the detail in the color of their teeth, the nifty keen glow of their swords, all the while not noticing that the fur disappears into the skin, the blood that comes from the gums around the teeth, or the razors edge of the glowing sword. Is it just a costume or something more, only those who can hear us can tell the difference. This gathering is given a name, minor Illuminati agents who started this tradition name the gathering Comic Con.
