  1. From least to most dangerous, the Major Demons, also called Splinters by the scholars of the Ch, are as follows:
  2.
  3. CURIOSITY: Curiosity demons are the most docile and strange of all the demons. Unlike most of their peers, Curiosity demons are not innately dangerous or uncomfortable to be around; they are eloquent and kind, and are eager to learn from anyone whose paths they may cross. Curiosity demons are said to be able to tap into all knowledge with effort, but will disappear after doing this once, and do it only as part of a bargain. They come in various forms, and can last for years, some choosing to live among the populace while others carry out their task immediately.
  4.
  5. A Curiosity demon is one of the most powerful and difficult to banish, despite its docile nature. They have expansive magical capabilities and are capable of warping time and space in strange ways, but they are vulnerable to the light of the Architect and must avoid sunlight at all costs. Curiosity demons disappear once they make a bargain, and their bargain is always the same; they will offer one incredibly valuable and accurate foresight, and in exchange, they consume the memories and knowledge of a single person whole, destroying all knowledge that person had of their life up to that point in the process (although they do retain some skills, language, and socialization). These insights can permit entire villages to avoid destruction from natural disasters, or turn the tides of wars, but someone must first be willing to lose every memory they have to make that trade.
  6.
  7. Curiosity demons are the second rarest demons of all. Only two or three exist in the world at any time.
  8.
  9. SORROW: The Sorrow demon is a haunting, but ultimately benign, presence. It melds from shadow upon its first appearance, and survives in shade, away from the light of the Architect. Sorrow demons are by far the most common, with many appearing in forests and other shaded areas throughout the year, although they avoid civilization. They appear as a thin and dark primordial pillar that spreads out over the ground at its base, with a pyramid at the top containing four eyes. Sorrow demons do not have any visible mouth, but are known best for their loud and harrowing wailing; its tortured cries inspire visceral fear in all beings, and are said to be so mournful that weaker animals simply fall dead in their wake. They mean no harm to any living thing, but their apparent torture is so great that a fragment of it can be felt in its wailing that can be heard even faintly for miles around. It is difficult to approach a Sorrow demon; the weakest individuals may even die of fright attempting to, but those who manage to reach them can quell their wailing long enough to make a deal with them. They are calmed by the presence of sapient mortals, as long as they are friendly.
  10.
  11. Sorrow demons can speak, but only a little bit. They speak in simple phrases, and only know a few words related to making 'trades'. Small trinkets, such as jewelry, and especially objects containing sentimental value, are known to be of great value to Sorrows, and they will conjure riches that are completely disproportionate to the object being offered, usually in favor of the mortal. Upon being given the item, they will cease their wailing and cradle it against themselves, disappearing into the trees, apparently sated. If an individual rejects the riches offered and insists on giving the sentimental object over without repayment, various positive effects have been reported, including being cured of ailments or being blessed with luck. The magnitude of blessing or repayment varies based on the sentimentality of the object offered; priceless family heirlooms, rings from widows, and even the ashes of dead individuals can yield massive returns, and some people will even explicitly ask that their ashes be given to a Sorrow demon to alleviate its suffering and act as a boon for a relative.
  12.
  13. If a Sorrow demon is attacked, it will scream, cry, and beg for mercy, but it can be killed as it does not fight back. The crying of a slain Sorrow demon embeds itself in the minds of even the most resolute and merciless killers, and instills crushing and unavoidable guilt that will haunt them for the rest of their life, on average killing them within a few years as their spirit withers and they fall fatally ill. Sorrow demons can be banished through magical means, but to the same effect.
  14.
  15. PAIN: Pain demons are generally not lethal, but are still dangerous to be around. They manifest simply as a pool of dark red 'blood', in forested or desert regions, that reveals an eye when sapient beings draw close. Pain demons project a powerful magical sphere for about five miles around them, causing all creatures caught within to feel varying degrees of pain. It begins faint, as mild soreness, and eventually reaches a fever pitch that can cause weaker beings to go into shock, almost doubling within the span of one hour compared to the usually week-long growth. During this hour long period before it disappears, the Pain demon can be heard howling and screaming clearly telepathically before it vanishes, at which point all pain subsides.
  16.
  17. Pain demons can be banished, and although it is difficult, they are the most frail of the demons besides Sorrows with respect to magic. Pain demons are able to make a bargain, as well, but their bargain is always brutal; they will demand a sacrifice, usually through major bloodletting from a sapient mortal being, before they will be sated and vanish. The amount of blood required varies—some are merciful, while others will demand the death of their subject to avoid the infliction of traumatic pain onto all those in range. The only reward ever given for such a bargain is the cessation of pain, but for some driven mad by the persistent pain, this may seem a fair bargain. Pain demons cannot be killed by physical attack.
  18.
  19. HATE: Hate demons are the most immediately dangerous and threatening of all demons. Hate demons are described by scholars as splinters of the Ch's hatred for the Architect and all that it has created, and they are a stark contrast to the pleased cruelty of Pain demons or the friendly but grim bargains offered by Curiosity demons. Instead, Hate demons do nothing but kill; they almost never speak, and their only reason to exist is to hunt living, sapient beings and destroy as much as they physically can.
  20.
  21. Hate demons appear as supernaturally thin, tall creatures with orbs of light for heads. They have many arms and legs which manifest as needed, allowing them to climb and slash at targets. No surface is too steep for them to climb, and they have been seen to phase through walls. They are faster than any known living being, with a maximum land speed of over 250mph and limitless stamina, and their claws are sharp enough to completely pass through armor as through paper. No amount of physical damage will destroy a Hate demon; only magical damage or banishing spells can damage or destroy a Hate demon.
  22.
  23. Hate demons are very rare, but they have grown more common as time goes on. It is said that places where negative emotions are common, such as Anz Vaskhul camps or in heavily beleaguered towns, Hate demons are more likely to form.
  24.
  25. A Hate demon offers a bargain only when it is captured and bound. It does not speak, but instead the mage that has captured it simply becomes aware of its offer; it will disappear forever, but in exchange, the Mage will be pursued by a malevolent and powerful shade for the rest of their life. This is the only way to completely banish a Hate demon, as they will inevitably reform in the same location within a few years if otherwise destroyed. Some are content to simply confront it each time it appears; others are willing to potentially sacrifice themselves, or at least their safety, for its permanent destruction.
  26.
  27. TERROR: Terror demons are the rarest demons of all, and are considered a major disaster wherever they appear. Only three Terror demons are known to have existed throughout history. Terror demons are invisible, but are evident by their effects; all animals within several miles of their location are afflicted with fear. They will flee, hide and avoid any confrontation, even if they starve waiting for the Terror demon to pass. People inside of this range will become far more anxious and paranoid, and may begin to have delusions and hallucinations that loved ones are a threat to them.
  28.
  29. Despite the fear they inflict, the Terror demon's most devastating effect is on wildlife. It can completely destroy any hunting or fishing efforts for miles from where it is. Even plant growth seems to halt, and plants will wither and die in its presence, destroying agriculture and potentially ruining an entire year's harvest. Terror demons take months to disappear, and as such can cause villages to starve or disperse in search of survival elsewhere. These factors can compound the stress that a Terror demon inflicts, and two of the three times it has appeared led to mass murder and societal collapse in nearby towns. Areas left in the wake of a Terror demon are lifeless for weeks or months after; almost all animals within the area either leave if possible or starve to death, and all plants wither and die. As vegetation pours over from bordering areas, these areas will eventually recover, but they are a grim portrait in the immediate aftermath.
  30.
  31. Terror demons are not known to make any bargains, and are impossible to banish through normal means. Only one of the three demons was banished instead of leaving 'naturally', by a legendary mage, although the credit for this task is disputed, and some are unsure if it even occurred.
  32.
  33. OTHERS:
  34. There are other, smaller splinters of the Ch, representing less dangerous emotions. One example are Forlorn splinters, which kidnap people in search of companionship. There are also some unique splinters that appear for various purposes, including those that seek to increase support for and gather ground for the Ch's disciples.
