  7. 22:52 <Lady_Gareth> hello
  8. 22:52 <Geigan> hi
  9. 22:52 +++ Metool has given op to Lady_Gareth
  10. 22:52 +++ Metool has taken op from Metool
  11. 22:52 <Narsis> yo
  12. 22:52 <Geigan> so he's old and he's been taking his time to build back up
  13. 22:52 <Lady_Gareth> and in a world so disconnected until recently, no one would really think twice about a band of caravaners here, or a small village there just disappearing/.
  14. 22:52 <Geigan> Who was he before this?
  15. 22:53 <Geigan> What sort of capabilities did he used to have and what all did he lose?
  16. 22:53 <Lady_Gareth> yes, and I am hoping that there is some kind of magic, or loss if time in this pocket demension that keeps people from aging so he can just stew in his madness for years and years, and learn whatever he wants to.
  17. 22:53 <Geigan> Since his current plan and mindset is based on what happened to him, establishing that would be a good idea
  18. 22:53 <Narsis> in terms of actually building the character from a mechanics point of view, figure out what you want him to do in combat
  19. 22:54 <Geigan> combat isn't even necessarily a priority for a while, since Gareth most likely won't encounter him immmediately
  20. 22:54 <Geigan> immediately*
  21. 22:54 <Narsis> true
  22. 22:54 <Geigan> Just figuring out who he is and why he does stuff will give you the core of the master plan to branch out from until it bumps into Gareth
  23. 22:55 <Lady_Gareth> he won't, he'll encounter lackey's
  24. 22:55 <Geigan> Which is where the story starts from Gareth's point of view
  25. 22:55 <Geigan> This is of course assuming a top down sort of design
  26. 22:55 <Lady_Gareth> Ok, so... before the magopocalypse he was an older elvan wizard. I'm thinking four or five hundred years old.
  27. 22:56 <Geigan> mhm, are we assuming like, 3.5 magic or something else?
  28. 22:56 <Lady_Gareth> He was powerful, an adviser to their king, a husband and a father.... yes, 3.5 was the world before the cataclysm....
  29. 22:57 <Geigan> k
  30. 22:57 <Lady_Gareth> AFK
  31. 22:57 <Geigan> ugh traitorous bowels, brb
  32. 22:57 <Narsis> Tactician spellcasting with a focus on scrying spells?
  33. 22:58 <Narsis> gives a real BBEG mastermind watching everyone and everything feel
  34. 22:59 <Narsis> Runesong Scholar also works cause of the ability to track people with their truename
  35. 23:00 <Lady_Gareth> BBEG??
  36. 23:01 <Metool> big bad evil guy
  37. 23:01 <Lady_Gareth> ahh, ok
  38. 23:02 <Lady_Gareth> tell me about it, I just recieved the PDF, and trying to read it would mean forsaking the conversation.
  39. 23:04 <Narsis> If you know someone's true name you can find them within [Extreme] range
  40. 23:04 <Lady_Gareth> nice
  41. 23:04 <Metool> Find them within Extreme?
  42. 23:04 <Geigan> back
  43. 23:05 <Lady_Gareth> He's probably not an encounter Gareth would have until much later. I want him to be the main reoccurring villain.
  44. 23:05 <Geigan> ok so
  45. 23:05 <Lady_Gareth> so he can be built powerful
  46. 23:05 <Geigan> How total was the annihilation of everything this man holds dear?
  47. 23:05 <Narsis> technically it's only cardinal direction within [Extreme] and exact within [Medium]
  48. 23:06 <Geigan> Was his entire nation wiped from the map?
  49. 23:06 <Geigan> and history?
  50. 23:06 <Geigan> or just structurally taken out
  51. 23:06 <Geigan> and might have some remnants?
  52. 23:07 <Geigan> also who specifically did it to him
  53. 23:08 <Lady_Gareth> pretty darn. His city was one of the first ones destroyed in the storms, as it rested in the trees of a great forest. there aren't even ruinsof his home, a great deal of it was bolstered by magic.
  54. 23:08 <Geigan> I assume family is dead
  55. 23:08 <Lady_Gareth> his family, who lived there, were killed. His wife and two daughters.
  56. 23:08 <Geigan> other more distant relatives perhaps?
  57. 23:08 <Geigan> Possible plot device later
  58. 23:08 <Lady_Gareth> not that he can remember anymore
  59. 23:09 <Lady_Gareth> at least, I wasn't thinking about it much
  60. 23:09 <Geigan> none that he cares about but perhaps one or two that might remember him
  61. 23:09 <Geigan> that could be useful as a plot hook later
  62. 23:10 <Geigan> What exactly triggered this magical cataclysm that so screwed his life over?
  63. 23:11 <Lady_Gareth> See MiLord in the main chat, he can tell you better than I can, I'm bad at wording those things without taking hours to think it over.
  64. 23:12 <Geigan> alright, who were his worst enemies before the cataclysm?
  65. 23:13 <Geigan> I can see him wanting to blame someone for all this after getting out of a stupor from just the earth shattering and such
  66. 23:14 *** Lord_Gareth joined #pocketdimension mibbit@ip72-205-241-167.ks.ks.cox.net
  67. 23:14 <Lord_Gareth> Okay, I'm here
  68. 23:14 <Lady_Gareth> thank you
  69. 23:14 <Lord_Gareth> 'Kay, so
  70. 23:15 <Lord_Gareth> Keeping in mind that Shatterholm itself is only one continent on a world with more than one.
  71. 23:15 <Lady_Gareth> I'll answer you in a minute Geigan
  72. 23:15 <Geigan> kk
  73. 23:16 <Lord_Gareth> The Magocalypse still lives in the memories of some ancient elves, drow and more rarely dwarves, though more and more of them die or commit suicide every year. As close as anyone can tell, the laws of magic went completely haywire, all at the same time.
  74. 23:17 <Lord_Gareth> Spells carefully woven snapped and came unraveled, and fragments of power ripped themselves free of their mooring to wreak vengeance upon the living world. Places with high amounts of magical energy - mage's towers, the underdark, even whole species that were magically attuned - were either destroyed or warped beyond recognition
  75. 23:17 <Lord_Gareth> The Underdark imploded, taking dozens of species and a good chunk of the surface with it. Whole mountain ranges plunged into the earth in wrack and ruin, and the wild energies boiled away the seas only to return them again and again as lashing storms
  76. 23:18 <Lord_Gareth> In the end Shatterholm was left with a vastly altered topography, cut through with wide and mighty rivers that divide the continent-island like a fractured mirror, and those few who survived began the still ongoing process of clearing out the taint of old, wild magic
  77. 23:19 <Geigan> Ooh pretty
  78. 23:19 <Lord_Gareth> Shatterholm's still cut through in places with chains of contingent spells with faulty triggers waiting to obliterate the unwary and pockets of Ancient Sorcery that are ill-understood and normally poisonous to the landscape
  79. 23:20 <Lord_Gareth> Some pockets of deep, spell-haunted wilderness continue to produce mutant horrors or, worse, seismic shifts
  80. 23:20 <Lord_Gareth> (Is that complete enough for you, Lady_Gareth?)
  81. 23:20 <Geigan> I like it.
  82. 23:21 <Geigan> I have another document for you
  83. 23:21 <Geigan> Environments.pdf [View next to chat]
  84. 23:21 <Lord_Gareth> And now I leave this part of the chat
  85. 23:21 <Lord_Gareth> Call me if you need me
  86. 23:21 <Lady_Gareth> good enough, thank you
  87. 23:21 <Geigan> thanks Gareth
  88. 23:22 <Lord_Gareth> No problem
  89. 23:22 *** Lord_Gareth left #pocketdimension mibbit@ip72-205-241-167.ks.ks.cox.net
  90. 23:22 <Geigan> Environmental Hazards
  91. 23:22 <Lady_Gareth> thanks
  92. 23:22 <Geigan> Feel free to get creative
  93. 23:22 <Lady_Gareth> see what I mean now though?
  94. 23:22 <Geigan> So yeah, obviously he has no one to blame.
  95. 23:22 <Geigan> But he also doesn't know
  96. 23:23 <Geigan> so he might take his anger out on something that doesn't necessarily deserve it for past transgressions.
  97. 23:23 <Geigan> which would justify a start of darkness for him sort of
  98. 23:24 <Geigan> so post apocalypse he withdraws into his pocket dimension and despairs for a bit
  99. 23:24 <Geigan> then he pulls himself back together
  100. 23:24 <Geigan> starts learning what new magic is like
  101. 23:24 <Lady_Gareth> I'm thinking that he probably blames the 'new gods' that Gareth and I have worked out. In his madness, he doesn't understand or realise that they ascended after the cataclysm, and possibly even as a result of it.
  102. 23:24 <Geigan> starts studying
  103. 23:24 <Lady_Gareth> yup
  104. 23:25 <Geigan> Scrying does seem like a useful ability for one who doesn't leave his own house much
  105. 23:25 <Lady_Gareth> and he knows the layout of the old world in relation to the new one, so he can visit old stronghold and start mining them for relics, old magical object, and other such wonders. Both to sell for funding because they still work (most of the time), and to use for himself.
  106. 23:25 <Geigan> and menial scouting abilities at least
  107. 23:25 <Lady_Gareth> *nods* yes, it would very much be.
  108. 23:25 <Geigan> I would suggest tactician spellcasting
  109. 23:26 <Geigan> has scrying and a spell called prying eyes
  110. 23:26 <Lady_Gareth> I haven't looked much into magic in Legend, can you give me a crash course?
  111. 23:26 <Geigan> ok so
  112. 23:26 <Geigan> you have 7 circles of spells
  113. 23:26 <Geigan> at each circle you learn three spells of your choice up to the highest circle you have access to
  114. 23:27 <Geigan> you can cast them similarly to spontaneous spellcasting in 3.5
  115. 23:27 <Geigan> spells are more generally useful, but none are particularly game dominating
  116. 23:27 <Geigan> tactician spellcasting is the best for utility casters
  117. 23:27 <Geigan> stuff like scrying and prying eyes are in here
  118. 23:28 <Geigan> scrying is effectively useless to the guy at first
  119. 23:28 <Geigan> nothing is familiar anymore so he's essentially poking around in the dark with that
  120. 23:28 <Geigan> so he'd sit there for a bit and rely on prying eyes
  121. 23:28 <Lady_Gareth> but, it won't take him long to learn
  122. 23:28 <Narsis> nope
  123. 23:28 <Geigan> a spell which creates little servitors that scout out around his hope
  124. 23:28 <Geigan> home
  125. 23:29 <Geigan> he runs into something he hates, and he decides he needs information
  126. 23:29 <Geigan> this being a thing he hates he's willing to get rough with them
  127. 23:29 <Geigan> capture them
  128. 23:29 <Narsis> is he kind of a know it all type of character?
  129. 23:29 <Geigan> interrogate them
  130. 23:29 <Narsis> like he would take all the knowledges?
  131. 23:29 <Geigan> possibly start "experimenting"
  132. 23:29 <Geigan> tactician would probably serve him well
  133. 23:30 <Geigan> (they get all knowledges trained)
  134. 23:30 <Narsis> indeed
  135. 23:30 <Lady_Gareth> definitely experimentation, but he has become wary, he's utterly convinced he never knows enough
  136. 23:30 <Narsis> would probably swap out Bag of Tricks for something with a bit of an offensive focus but that's just me
  137. 23:30 <Geigan> So he's not exactly willing to leave his little safe bubble
  138. 23:31 <Lady_Gareth> his ultamate goal is to somehow infuse his little dimension with the old magic, become a god, and infuse the magic back into the world
  139. 23:31 <Geigan> but he starts capturing travelers for more info and experimentation
  140. 23:31 <Lady_Gareth> not often no
  141. 23:31 <Lady_Gareth> yes, he has six keys to the domain he found
  142. 23:31 <Lady_Gareth> they can be triggered completely by accedent
  143. 23:31 <Narsis> so he isn't really a know-it-all type? or is he?
  144. 23:32 <Geigan> build I would suggest would be RSS/Combat alchemist/true mage/tactician spells
  145. 23:32 <Geigan> being a villain you don't have to build him like a PC
  146. 23:32 <Geigan> which means you can cheat a bit
  147. 23:32 <Narsis> heh
  148. 23:32 <Geigan> an extra track may be a bit far
  149. 23:33 <Geigan> I think that might be a legendary ability?
  150. 23:33 <Narsis> umm...
  151. 23:33 <Metool> full buy-in is a thing, isn't it?
  152. 23:33 <Lady_Gareth> they are crystal balls about the size of a medium to large orange.... He wants to know it all, but he doesn't spout out what he knows... when triggered, they transport everything and everyone for a three yard radius into his pocket bubble. Only two are currently extant in the world, he has the other four with him as spares.
  153. 23:33 <Narsis> yes FBI is
  154. 23:33 <Geigan> yeah but items are nice
  155. 23:33 <Lady_Gareth> yes, we can do full buy in.
  156. 23:33 <Geigan> Would he be legendary btw?
  157. 23:34 <Narsis> ftr i highly suggest Legendary
  158. 23:34 <Lady_Gareth> I don't think i follow you?
  159. 23:34 <Narsis> there are some really cool things you could stick on him
  160. 23:34 <Lady_Gareth> legendary?
  161. 23:34 <Geigan> Legendary is a set of extra abilities
  162. 23:34 <Geigan> that can be applied to a character
  163. 23:34 <Lady_Gareth> oh, by all means then, yes.
  164. 23:34 <Narsis> it's an optional set of abilities that gives a character more power
  165. 23:35 <Geigan> You can peruse those later at your leisure
  166. 23:35 <Geigan> they're in the back of the book
  167. 23:35 <Metool> Also makes them subject to untrained history checks
  168. 23:35 <Metool> I think.
  169. 23:35 <Geigan> If necessary puppetmaster can cover that up
  170. 23:35 <Lady_Gareth> minionmancy is going to be a thing for him.
  171. 23:36 <Geigan> Won't necessarily be necessary with tracks though we do have something for that
  172. 23:36 <Lady_Gareth> he's had a little over a hundred years to brainwash the people trapped in his pocketdimension, so a lot of them serve him very willingly, and some may even be convinced he is a god
  173. 23:36 <Geigan> Yeah, those can just be people that help him
  174. 23:36 <Geigan> represented by the mooks I linked you to and other various characters
  175. 23:37 <Lady_Gareth> I have to go now. Can you save our chat so we can continue this later/
  176. 23:37 <Lady_Gareth> \?
  177. 23:37 <Geigan> sure sure
  178. 23:37 <Geigan> I'll pastebin it
