  1. Pokemon FireRed Round 2 FAQ
  2.
  3. Q: What do you play this game on?
  4. A: I play on an original Nintendo DS with a Capture Card built inside of it.
  5.
  6. Q: What are you trying to do?
  7. A: Speedrun beating the Round 2 Elite Four in Pokemon FireRed as fast as possible.
  8.
  9. Q: What's the difference between this category and Any%?
  10. A: FireRed Any% is basically just beating the game. This category requires you to beat the Champion once, complete the Sevii Island side quest, catch 60 unique Pokemon to unlock the National Dex, then beat the champion for a 2nd time.
  11.
  12. Q: Why are you catching Pokemon?
  13. A: I need to catch 60 to get the National Dex, which unlocks several sidequests that unlock the second round of the Elite Four.
  14.
  15. Q: So I hear you use MewTwo or Zapdos in this category?
  16. A: Yes! Depending on the route Zapdos or MewTwo will eventually be used as my main battler for this run. I will be using the MewTwo route for this run.
  17.
  18. Q: Why MewTwo instead of Zapdos?
  19. A: The MewTwo route has been recently routed with improvements. I'd like to try it for myself and see what it's like compared to the Zapdos route.
  20.
  21. Q: Is the MewTwo faster than the Zapdos route?
  22. A: According to these calculations by ExarionU, yes. https://pastebin.com/jpb8rN66
  23.
  24. Q: Are there any notes for this category?
  25. A: https://pastebin.com/QFusGUSC
  26.
  27. Q: You keep mentioning "Spinners" what exactly are "Spinners"?
  28. A: Spinners are generally trainers that can spin in many different directions at a time. With the way Generation 3 mechanics work, these trainers can also be avoided altogether through manipulation. By going into one of you Bag menus or selecting the TM Case, this causes their internal clock that causes them to spin, to reset to 0. This basically gives us a 32 frame window to pass any Spinner with only 16 frames required to pass them under normal circumstances.
  29.
  30. Q: What do the different colors mean in the Pokemon Catch Counter?
  31. A: Blue = Mandatory Pokemon I need in the future
  32. Red = Non-Mandatory Pokemon I've caught.
  33. Black = Mandatory Pokemon that I've caught.
  34.
  35. Q: What are the Sevii Islands and what do you do there?
  36. A: After beating Blaine's gym, Bill prompts you to take a trip to some Islands if I say "Yes". For the first section, I mostly do a few sidequest involving saving a little girl and dealing with a biker gang. The second time we come to the islands, we get a quest from Prof. Oak and deal with team rocket on a few different islands before taking them out. We also have to grab a couple of gems and bring them back to Celeo.
  37.
  38. Q: Does it matter if you play FireRed or LeafGreen?
  39. A: Yes, the game corner Pokémon prizes cost more in LeafGreen than they do in FireRed.
  40.
  41. Q: Are there any glitches used in this category?
  42. A: There are no glitches used in the run.
  43.
  44. Q: Why don't you just grab a Squirtle and run with it?
  45. A: If I were to just go off and grab any random Squirtle, I'd probably die extremely quickly due to bad stats. I'm not really willing to just do this when I have the opportunity to RNG manipulate starter stats.
  46.
  47. Q: Why do you keep resetting?
  48. A: Probably because I didn't RNG manipulate a Squirtle properly. With the game running at 60 FPS as well as . I want 30+ IV Sp. Atk and 21+ IV Speed with a Mild (+Sp. Atk, -Def), Modest (+Sp. Atk, -Atk), or Rash (+Sp. Atk, -Sp. Def) nature.
  49.
  50. Q: How do you know the stats you will get on your Squirtle?
  51. A: So the way Generation 3 games work in terms of getting a good starter is based on the time frame in which you grab the Squirtle from the lab table. Before reaching the lab however, we need to plug our Trainer ID into a program to properly determine what Squirtles are on the seed, what stats they have, and exactly what time frame we need to reach that specific Squirtle at. The game also runs at 60 FPS, so getting a Squirtle is frame perfect making it hard to do. If you're interested in using this program, check here for more details. 52.
  53. Q: What are clusters?
  54. A: When I say things like "Oh hey, there's a cluster!", it basically means that there are multiple Squirtles that have runnable stats and natures surrounding each other by a few frames/milliseconds.
  55.
  56. Q: Does gender affect anything like in Gen 2?
  57. A: Gender for the Squirtle and Trainer sprite I choose don't really make a big difference.
  58.
  59. Q: What are the beeps I hear right before you grab a Squirtle?
  60. A: I use a program called Flowtimer. This program basically allows me to produce an audio queue that makes it easier to hit the Squirtle that I want to run.
  61.
  62. Q: Why Round 2 instead of Any%?
  63. A: I wanna try something new.
  64.
  65. Q: Aren't you tired of FireRed?
  66. A: I'm only tired of Any% right now.
