In the Dark Ages, after the fall of the Roman Empire, weak Britain is divided into several clans, while the powerful Ireland, untouched by the Romans, dominates and ravages the British tribes. The just and noble British leader, Marke, meets with the other clan chiefs to try to unite the country, but they are attacked and slaughtered by the Irish army headed by Morholt. Marke loses one hand protecting the young Tristan, who had just lost his parents, and Marke raises the boy as if he were of his blood. Years later, after another attack by the Irish forces, Tristan rescues his people, who had been captured to serve as slaves, and kills the brutal Morholt, to whom the beautiful Irish princess, Isolde, had been promised in marriage. Tristan is poisoned by the sword of Morholt, declared dead by his mates, and put on a boat as part of his funeral. The ship floats out to sea, and lands on the Irish shore. Isolde, along with her maid-servant, Bradnae, finds the boat with Tristan in it, and hides him in a hut, where she nurses him back to health. In the process, they fall in love for each other, but with Isolde concealing her identity from Tristan. When Tristan is about to be discovered by Irish guards, he escapes by boat back to Britain to avoid being captured and killed. Isolde&#39;s father, King Donnchadh, together with the British traitor Wictred, declares a joust as part of a plan to divide the British and make Wictred king, by promising the hand of Isolde to the winner. However, Tristan wins the tournament. Without knowing that Isolde is his love, Tristan offers her to Marke, in order to make Marke king and thus unify the British clans. When Tristan sees who Isolde is, he must decide between his friendship and loyalty to Marke and his love for Isolde.
An affair between the second in line to Britain&#39;s throne and the princess of the feuding Irish spells doom for the young lovers.
Although i love this movie, i was disappointed not only by how much of the legend they left out, but by James Franco&#39;s performance.<br/><br/>I love James Franco so don&#39;t get me wrong when i say that i think he could&#39;ve done more as the role as Tristan. I just found that yeah he was obviously tormented by not being able to be with Isolde, you could see that anytime you looked in his eyes, But i just wished he would&#39;ve shown More than just the &quot;wo to me&quot; side of the character. In the end i was hoping that the guy that played Melot would&#39;ve played Tristan (no offense to James) Sophia Myles was excellent however, when i originally saw the movie i kept thinking &quot;where have i seen here before?&quot; then it hit me that she played in Underworld (great movie) Also i wish they had&#39;ve told the whole story, it would&#39;ve made more of an impact and this movie would&#39;ve blown other period films like Braveheart,Troy,Alexander and as such out of the water. Although all the sets were made from scratch you can tell this wasn&#39;t a BIG budget film and i think the filming shows that greatly.<br/><br/>The legend actually in the end makes both Tristan and Isolde very bitter till death but in the end, under all the frustration nd pain they still love one another. so i was disappointed in one way or another even though for what it is ..its not that bad of a movie and it is one of my favorites.
When I hired this film from the video store I was expected yet another typical love story, where they tragically die in each others arms and it ends with him/her falling in love with the best friends second cousin twice removed or something along those lines, but I was highly surprised when I got anything but that.<br/><br/>I had heard the good reviews of Tristan + Isolde and thought perhaps I should check it out myself. When I placed it in my DVD player I was getting ready to turn it off half way through and put in a good horror film yet I found myself sitting on the edge of my sit, anticipating every moment of this beautiful film. The acting is suburb and Sophia Myles delivers a wonderful Irish accent, she definitely does have an ear for accents and along with everyone in the cast. The battle scenes were believable and that is how I imagined they would fight in those days.<br/><br/>The story is yes, yet another tragic love story but, still it isn&#39;t one you find everyday, there is something that will stay in your heart, maybe it&#39;s the fact that you know Tristan and Isolde are two lovers doomed from the moment they meet or , I don&#39;t know. Yet still I could not bring myself to give this movie 10/10 for I felt that two main characters were slightly rushed, I know the old Celtic legend goes that they drank a love potion and fell madly in love yet that wasn&#39;t the case, one moment Isolde was finding him and the next they are making love, I cannot wrap my head around it, but still, the scenery, the acting, the fighting and the mere story alone is enough to make up for that one little flaw.<br/><br/>8/10
Franco, the hollow-cheeked, pouty-lipped actor best known as Spider-Man's nemesis Harry Osborn, plays Tristan like a biker boy with a broadsword.
