  3. ---
  4. Writing Section - last section you will do in your test
  5. Each writing task is scored out of 5 points. The average of both tasks is converted into your final writing score: 5=30, 4=25, 3=20, 2=14, 1=8, 0=0
  6.
  7. Independent (30 minutes): Write about your personal answer to a question, with reasons and examples.
  8. Integrated (20 minutes to write): read a text, listen to part of a lecture, and then write about how the lecture relates to (contradicts, usually) the text
  9. ---
  10. Independent Writing:
  11. 4-5 paragraphs total
  12.
  13. Introduction: summarize the topic (with background information) and state your own opinion (thesis statement)
  14. Reason paragraphs: 2-3 paragraphs, one for each main reason for your opinion, with a couple of examples for each reason
  15. Conclusion paragraph: Restate your opinion and the reasons, and generalize (advice for the reader, plans or predictions for the future, explanation of why your answer is important, etc.)
  16. ---
  17. Look at question 74 on the handout.
  18. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The best way to travel is in a group led by a tour guide. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
  19. ---
  20. With your partner, put together an outline for a “disagree” answer to this question.
  21.
  22. Introduction: background about travel in general (it’s becoming more popular, there are many ways to do it)
  23. Some people travel in a group with a guide because it requires less planning.
  24. However, I believe this is not the best way to travel for three main reasons.
  25.
  26. Possible reasons: no freedom to choose where you want to go, no option to stay longer at a place you like, stressful to always be with other people, might be individual problems with other travelers, more expensive than traveling on your own
  27.
  28. Conclusion: “For these reasons I believe it’s not the best…”, give your personal preference for what is the best way to travel, give advice to readers (or other options that are better to travel)
  29. ---
  30. Homework: write an outline and introduction paragraph for question 98, “If you were asked to send…”
