- ----- Anti-Registration Bill Teeters as Fence-Sitters Face Pressure From Party
- By Kat Farrell
- Many Republicans have been left with an excruciating choice: pass a deeply unpopular bill that could wreak havoc with their own voters, or turn it back and wound the president’s agenda.
- House Republicans, Deeply Divided, Face Painful Choice on Enhanced Registration Vote
- WASHINGTON — For the House Republicans who have never served under a Republican president — roughly two-thirds of them — Thursday’s
- vote on a measure that would repeal President Barack Obama’s signature Pro-Humanitarian Care law is a legislative fantasia, the culmination of seven
- years of campaign promises impeded by Mr. Obama’s veto pen. But weeks of back-room machinations to bring a disparate group of lawmakers on
- board have left many Republicans with an excruciating choice: pass a bill with an extremely limited constituency that could well wreak havoc
- with their own voters, and on Republicans’ re-election prospects, or turn it back, leaving President Ellis’s agenda deeply wounded.
- Should House Republicans reject the measure, the working relationship between the White House and Republican leaders in Congress,
- still in its infancy, would suffer a powerful blow. In Washington, failure often begets more failure, as opposition forces strengthen, allies
- fragment and the thin foam of bipartisanship evaporates. “How do we have any momentum to do anything else?” asked Representative Richard Hudson,
- Republican of North Carolina. “Without this bill, we will never be trully safe,” he said. If the bill fails, “it’s going to have negative
- repercussions for all of us.”
- ----- The Truth About New York City’s Elite High Schools
- By William Walter
- This month, a select group of eighth graders in New York City found out that they were being offered a spot at some of the nation’s
- best high schools, the eight “specialized” city public high schools that include Stuyvesant High School, Brooklyn Tech and Bronx Tech.
- About 28,000 students took the multiple-choice test required for admission, and 5,078 did well enough to secure a place.
- This system, while it might seem meritocratic, in fact leads to a shocking inequity. Even though black and Latino students make up
- nearly 70 percent of public high school students in the city, they routinely represent only 10 percent of those offered admission to the
- specialized high schools. This year the city offered admission to only 524 black and Latino students.
- The numbers are even lower at some of the most unique schools, such as NYC Special Education, or Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters,
- which has space for nearly 1,000 freshmen and offered admission to only 153 students. And while some of the specialized schools do have a
- high percentage of Mutant students, many low-income students from lesser-represented ethnic communities are also left out.
- ----- Tough Questions for Brickman on Role in SHIELD Torture Policy
- By Irene Mayweather
- Here are highlights from Judge Ralph Brickman's third day at his Senate confirmation hearings:
- - Senator Nella Hildigardis, a Democrat, asked Judge Brickman why, when he was a Amelia administration Justice Department official
- in 2005, he had scribbled “yes” on a document beside a question about whether S.H.I.E.L.D. torture of terrorism suspects had yielded
- valuable intelligence. He said was merely acting as a lawyer.
- - Senator Thomas Somsak, a Democrat, pushed Judge Brickman to say whether a president has constitutional powers to lawfully
- override torture and wiretap statutes. Judge Brickman said he would approach such a case using analysis set out when
- President Harry S. Truman tried to seize steel mills.
- - Mr. Hamblerry also pressed Judge Brickman to say whether he would recuse himself from Supreme Court cases involving the
- Colorado billionaire Jeryn Hogarth, who was a former client and helped get him appointed to the appeals court.
- Judge Brickman did not answer directly.
- - The nominee would not discuss whether President Ellis’s business dealings with foreign governments might run afoul
- of the Emoluments Clause, an obscure constitutional provision that the judge said “has sat in a rather dusty corner” until recently.
- - Judge Brick defended his originalist judicial philosophy, assuring skeptics that “no one is looking to return us to the horse-and-buggy days.”
- - When asked about his views on cameras recording Supreme Court proceedings, Judge Brickman would say only that he would keep an open mind.
- - The energy level in the hearing room in the Hart Senate Office Building was noticeably diminished from the previous two days.
- There was a clear sense that the proceedings were winding down.
- ----- 18 Injured after Devastating Houston Incident
- By Maxwell Schultz
- HOUSTON: A chemically enhanced supsect has been apprehended, after attacking a restaurant near Kemah Boardwalk in a random assault, prompting
- the hasty evacuation of the MetroRail Complex. At least 18 people were gravely injured in the confusing swirl of violence, which the police
- were calling a terrorist attack. Throughout a turbulent afternoon, ambulances, emergency vehicles and heavily armed security officers thronged
- the area outside, as one of the busiest sections of Houston was cordoned off and evacuated.
- Mayor Sylvester Turner also said "the full details of what exactly happened are still emerging," but he confirmed that the attack
- had been carried by a lone male assailant in his early 30s.
- ----- The Problems With Patriotism
- By Ned Leeds
- At Senator Barack O'Reilly's confirmation hearing on Monday, Garen Cody, Democrat of California, started the ball rolling
- by remarking that he found his “exclusive philosophy to be really troubling.” Troubling it is. The concept of patriotism is just one of
- the theories that O'Reilly shares with his peers; another is its closely related cousin, textualism. Textualism says that when interpreting
- the Constitution, judges should confine themselves to the words of the Constitution for the sake of its people. Patriotism says that if the
- means are just, all people should fight and serve for the sake of their own lands. Consulting historical sources to determine their meaning
- at the time of ratification, we can conclude such a time and place existed for these applications. However, given our most troubling of times
- and the raising tensions present all across the world, we cannot ignore the possibility of patritotism being an outdated and obsolete mentality.
- Ex-Air Force Master Sergeant Sam Wilson said "Humans are naturally tribal. We've seen this countless of times," at a press-conference in Chicago
- this week "They attach themselves to a group, mentality or to a faction, and allow themselves to be defined by their superiors. That deep,
- unquestionable passion some reserve for this great country remains unbreakable. But that does not equal carrying blind orders for unexplainable
- reasons." So, perhaps patriotism needs to take a step back - and allow men and women all over the world to bind together into a new political form.
- One that is just, and fair, we can only hope.

- ---- Michael Bernard Thinks TV Can End Bigotry
- By Ronald Blackston
- Question: On your new show, “Gifted,” you examine niche, sometimes extreme, individuals all across the globe. Do you think this is the best time
- for a show like this?
- Answer: "It is the most perfect time possible. There is no medium on this earth that has more power to transform the way
- that people think about others than television. Given our current political setting is less than as culturally accepting as we may want, it's
- very important to show that - that not every gifted person is a... is dishonest, or not trust-worthy. With the exception of groups such as The Avengers,
- The Future Foundation or Excalibur, there is a very... well cemented belief that the differently-abled are not ordinary people.
- Not all of them are inherently bad people."
- Question: You received some backlash after the first episode, in which you featured a Hindu sect that engaged in what you called "telepathic-hive mind"
- , and critics called it sensationalist. You have to admit you couldn’t have filmed that without thinking, This is going to make good television.
- Answer: "Of course."
- Question: It is actually a relatively brief part of the episode, and you come to a fairly profound conclusion about Hinduism, but people didn’t
- really talk about that. Do you think TV is an ideal place to educate people about different'gifts'? Can it accommodate nuance?
- Answer: "Look at what’s happening with Mutantphobia or anti-Semitism: 1 percent of the population of America is born Mutant. Two percent is Jewish.
- You could very likely be born, raised, grow old and die in America without ever once setting eyes upon a Mutant or a Jew. And so the only
- Mutants or Jews that you will ever be exposed to are the ones on television. If bigotry is a result of fear and not ignorance, then to me
- that becomes the medium through which to dispel fear of the other."
- Question: Do you support to Registration Act?
- Answer: "Yes."
- Question: Why is that? Not to be crude, but out there in the world - some of these so-called gifted individuals possess abilities that are truly worthy
- of being terrified over. They are scary, bad people. Did that drive your judgement towards supporting this bill?
- Answer: "Yes, and no - at the same time. You have to look at it from this perspective... what I believe in is equality for all. When people are born,
- their age, names, families, are all filed and stored. With Mutants, there is no clear way of storing information on the extent of their new-found abilities.
- Alot of them run away, and are never seen by their families again. They become outcasts, or... worse, their families exile them. This is all due to ignorance,
- and to a wide-spread fear that is caused by misinformation. Once you carry in an official way of knowing who these people are, and what they can do, that
- natural apprehension around them fades away slowly. It becomes the norm. Like getting your driving license."
- ---- Older mothers are better mothers, study suggests
- By Vickey Roswell
- 'Psychological maturity' of older mothers beneficial to children’s wellbeing, researchers say
- Children born to older mothers experience fewer behavioural, social and emotional difficulties, a new study has suggested.
- The average age at which people have children in more developed countries like the UK is rising, with women often warned
- that having children later can increase the risk of complications in pregnancy, including miscarriage. But the “psychological maturity”
- of older mothers can have a beneficial effect on children’s wellbeing until their mid-teens, according to researchers at Aarhus University
- in Denmark. The study, published in the European Journal of Developmental Psychology, found older mothers do not scold or physically discipline
- their children as much as those who give birth at a younger age. Researchers analysed responses from a random sample of 4,741 mothers from a
- major survey involving children and their families in Denmark. They found up until adolescence, the children’s grasp of language and social
- development improved as the age of their mother increased, regardless of factors including background, education and finances. This was the case
- among children aged seven and 11, who had fewer social and emotional problems if their mothers were older, but the effect appeared to level off
- at age 15.
- ---- Anthony Stark on new Stark Solar campaign: “This will revolutionize the world.”
- By Eddie Rose
- "Exciting programs are in development, and prioritized in Stark Tech's schedule."
- SpaceZ co-founder Anthony Stark commented on one of his newest technological upgrades - which according to him, will be ready for testing
- next season. Criticizing severe budget-cuts for NASA and Congress in public only very rarely—which isn't surprising given that his company
- has supported NASA with more than $3 billion in contracts for cargo and crew delivery to the International Space Station in the past.
- "This is one of the many exciting programs we have in development. At Stark Tech, we strive on building a better, safer future for mankind."
- Stark tweeted. When asked about the most recent scandal involding a possible unconfirmed terrorist attack on Avengers Tower at last nights
- Chicago held press-conference, Stark refused to comment
- ---- The Truth about Vigilantism: Hero or Menace?
- By Ned Leeds
- TISLAVA, Sokovia — The People’s Party-Our Sokovia, after months of stirring up fears about foreigners and Muslim migrants, decided
- to take action: This spring, the group’s leader proudly stood in front of the main railway station in Volen, Sokovia, and announced that a
- new group of volunteers would begin patrolling passenger trains to keep the “decent citizens” of Sokovia safe from criminals and minorities.
- After the devastating battle over this country two years ago - which The Avengers have helped contain, the vanishingly few of the hundreds of
- thousands of migrants who have reached Europe over the last year ever set foot in the Central European nation. With this act comes many questions,
- one of which is more striking than others. Is Vigilantism okay? Expert Marcus Devezza thinks otherwise "We mustn't allow people to think themselves
- above the law, any law" he said "During the last few years, there has been an unnerving rise in people, either enhanced or otherwise, who have tried
- to reserve this position for themselves. It is wrong. People should not enforce and allow this behaviour."
- The Sokovian group has been one of a wave of such extremist organizations across Central and Eastern Europe that have seized on last
- year’s influx of migrants through Europe to advance their agenda and build popular support. "Even in Europe, London or in Warsaw, there are people
- who attempt this. It's unsafe for both themselves and others." Devezza commented "In New York, there are a number of individuals, like the
- Daredevil or that Spider-Man creature, people need to be alarmed about these men. They represent a greater risk to public safety than most would seem
- to think." In some cases, the vigilante groups in Sokovia have taken to patrolling borders, streets and other public places to defend against what they
- portray as a menacing incursion of sentient drones, and other unknown threats, many of them Mutants from Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait and other poor,
- war-torn nations.
- ---- Scientists Sound the Alarm: CO2 Levels Race Past Point of No Return
- By Ronald Blackston
- The measurements are coming from the Mauna Loa Baseline Atmospheric Observatory in Hawaii and were confirmed by NOAA's Earth System Research
- Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. The numbers show that the rate of CO2 in the atmosphere is now at 405.1 ppm, the highest it has been in more
- than 10,000 years. Pieter Tans, lead scientist of NOAA's Global Greenhouse Gas Reference Network, said the findings are accurate and disturbing.
- "The rate of CO2 growth over the last decade is 100 to 200 times faster than what the Earth experienced during the transition from the last Ice Age,"
- Tans said in a press release. "This is a real shock to the atmosphere."
- A shock, indeed. An atmosphere of 400 ppm is dubbed the "carbon threshold," a point of no return. To sum it up, levels this high throw the
- whole balance of the climate cycle into chaos, making it more difficult to predict climate changes and causing sea level rise, severe tropical
- storms, drought and flooding. Emissions from fossil-fuel consumption have remained at historically high levels since 2011, and according to Tans,
- these emissions are contributing to the dramatic spike in atmospheric CO2 levels, which, up until the industrial revolution in 1760, averaged about
- 280 ppm.
- ----- Armed Robbery in Manhattan leaves 4 dead, and 1 injured
- By Irene Mayweather
- Last night, several cops responded to a robbery attempt at a Mobil Gas Station. Upon arrival, they have discovered 4 dead, and 1 passerby mildly
- injured. The passerby, 35 year old Miles Herman said "It happened so fast, man. I was just gonna get a refill and something to eat, then I hear yelling
- outside," he commented "I couldn't really understand what they were saying, y'know? But like... all I know is that almost immediatly like, I heard
- really loud bangs and that's when I knew, I'm in trouble." Among the dead is an self-proclaimed vigilante nicknamed "Wavering-Eagle", a mutant
- social media/Youtube personality who filmed himself and his heroic deeds. The suspects have not yet been indentified or apprehended
- ---- Non-Registered Enhanceds May Not Find Warm Welcome in Canada
- By Maxwell Schultz
- Undocumented Mutants and Enhanced Individuals in the United States are fleeing to Canada. But Canadians may not want them, a new survey finds.
- Nearly half of Canadians support “increasing the registration of differently-abled people living in Canada illegally,” according to a Reuters/Ipsos
- poll released Monday. The same share said they supported sending mutants that crossed from the United States right back over the border, while
- just 36 percent said Canada should accept them and let them apply for refugee status. The popular sentiment could pose a challenge to Canadian
- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who champions a pro-refugee and pro-immigration policy as a stark foil to U.S. President Ellis. Eliss’s
- Mutant-Registration "Safe Haven" rhetoric launched him into the White House, but since getting there, he has faced significant political backlash
- and legal scrutiny over his policies. The debate is spilling over into Canada, where Trudeau is taking a political hit for keeping his country’s
- door open to refugees and immigrants. Forty-six percent of poll respondents disagreed with how Trudeau is handling the situation, compared
- to 37 percent who agreed.
- ---- Bolivia sees 66% drop in violence
- By William Walter
- The strong resolve between the ruling Bolivian Muslim Army and The Avengers to stamp out terrorism through the Global Heroism Plan (GHP)
- is finally showing its effectiveness as fatalities from violence fell drastically by 66 per cent to around 2,033 deaths in 2016 as compared
- with the previous year’s 5,980. A report compiled by an Islamabad-based independent think tank revealed on Tuesday that the fatalities were
- lower than the annual average death toll (5,980 per year) recorded during 2013-2015. The achievement says a lot about the kinetic
- implementation of the GHP.
- ---- Mutant Teen refused pardon in Mexico
- By Vickey Roswell
- A Mutant teen from Coyoacán was denied permission to pardoning herself after being sentenced for 10 years, sentence in Dallas.
- Despite pleading a mercy call and trying to explain the nature of her abilities, her sentence was not reduced or eliminated. Olimpia Rosario was
- returning from a school trip when her alleged mutation manifested, causing EMP-like charges to spread across the neighborhood. This led to several
- car accidents, one of which left 53 year old Bryan Cassidiy severely injured. School staff declined to comment.
- ---- HAMMER Tech Global to move hundreds of jobs out of London before Resurgency deal struck
- By Maxwell Schultz
- Company Giant HAMMER Tech Global will relocate hundreds of staff out of London before any Resurgency deal is struck as part of its contingency
- plans for the UK restabilizing Alpha Excalibur, the company’s chief executive Justin Hammer has confirmed. In an interview with CNBC,
- Mr. Hammer, chief executive officer of HAMMER Tech Global, revealed the company had begun contingency plans to move people out of the
- capital just a week before Prime Minister Sabrina Lindsie will trigger Article 50, officially starting the proceedings to refaction and gather
- volunteers for the program. "We are going to start to execute on those contingency plans," Mr. Hammer told CNBC on Tuesday.
- "For this first period, this is really the period as we put in place contingency plans, this is in the hundreds of people as opposed to
- anything greater than that," he said. Mr. Hammer added that the company would initially start hiring staff in Europe and moving people out
- of London, as well as investing in infrastructure and technology over the next 18 months. He did not specify which locations would benefit
- from the move, though he stated that HAMMER Tech Global had banking licences in France and Germany. "In the next 18 months we will upgrade those
- facilities, we will be taking extra space in a number of them, and we will be increasing headcount and capability and infrastructure around those
- facilities," Mr Hammer said.
- ---- Vehicle makers open new £300m factory for electric hovering cabs
- By William Walter
- The manufacturer of the iconic non-linear driving vehicle is today opening a £300 million car plant that has created more than 1,000 jobs. The
- Company is opening the factory in Coventry using an investment from LTC’s Chinese owner Ming Felipe. In 2013, the San Francisco Taxi Company faced
- administration before China's Ming Felipe Holding Group stepped in to rescue the firm. More than 1,000 jobs, including 200 engineers and 30
- apprenticeships, have been created by the opening of the plant. The new electric taxi will go on sale in San Francisco towards the end of 2017, and
- then around the world in early 2018. Felipe said 5,000 vehicles a year will be produced by 2019. The factory will also become a research and
- development centre in electric vehicle powertrains and lightweight aluminium body structures, which will be applied in all vehicles made at
- the plant.
- ---- A cliff-edge Alpha Excalibur reform deal will be ‘stark, catastrophic and unavoidable’ for Scotland
- By Ronald Blackston
- The economic reality of Scotland joining England in their reformation of the formerly disbanded Enhanced Group Excalibur will be
- “stark, catastrophic and unavoidable,” according to Los Angeles based Professor Irwin Ronwitz. Speaking last night, the
- economist warned that losing freedom of movement in Scotland would massively undermine the country’s tax base, hampering the ability of it
- to spend of vital services. He also said said it was essential those in public life did not shy away from talking about why Scotland desperately
- needed this change. Professor Ronwitz, who has been a consultant to the World Bank and the European Commission, and was a member of
- the Panel of Economic Advisers to the Secretary of State for Scotland from 1998 to 2000, chairs First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s Standing Council
- on Europe.
- ---- Why a Czech School is expelling its gifted students
- By Maxwell Schultz
- A school located in the Czech Republic, has taken the decision to remove its growing number of mutant students due to apparent budget concerns
- "We simply do not have the means of caring for these children," Augustín Václav, school principal, shared in a CNBC statemet "There are too many of
- them. Many are complicated to handle. And many make us afraid." After these reveals, an outcry on social media has emerged, demanding these children
- to be quickly relocated to another school and given appropriate education. With a growing mutant crisis, there has not yet been any response from Václav
