  4. this is a pretty typical Aussie backyard
  5. you can't call it a garden because
  6. there's no plants well I can fix that
  7. make it look a lot nicer hide the fence
  8. and even the next-door neighbor's
  9. now what I've got in mind is a raised
  10. garden vent
  11. Herick and raised garden beds are a
  12. great idea for a couple of reasons you
  13. can guarantee that your plants have got
  14. good drainage you can guarantee that
  15. they've got plenty of nutrients because
  16. you're bringing your new soil it's light
  17. and fluffy and full of all the good
  18. stuff now I'm going to use a wall that's
  19. called versa wall it's got a beautiful
  20. texture and a charcoal color so it adds
  21. a couple of dynamics to the garden
  22. straightaway it gives you height and
  23. then extra car the plants will thrive
  24. hide the fence pretty much straightaway
  25. and give it a bit of water and a bit of
  26. patience hide the shed in a year or two
  27. how can we completely transform this
  28. area from this to this
  29. now the first thing we've got to do is
  30. work out where the garden bed is going
  31. to go put a string line out and Mark it
  32. out now moving from a garden bed to be a
  33. meter wide I'm putting a lillypilly
  34. hedge in that I want to allow 600 mil
  35. for it then in front of it I'm putting
  36. some liriope I'm around 200 and then I'm
  37. allowed 200 for the block giving me my
  38. meter so coming off the fence
  39. finding a minha the outside of my stake
  40. is the meter double-check it tie it off
  41. and I'm going to take all the grass out
  42. and the reason I'm taking the grass out
  43. is because it can grow through the soil
  44. into your garden bed and across the
  45. front I need to dig a footing now sits
  46. on a hundred Miller Road base compacted
  47. but I'm going to have to go about 300
  48. mil wide too so it's nice and firm and
  49. strong and if you've got some mates that
  50. aren't doing anything on a Saturday
  51. afternoon this is a great time to invite
  52. them around for a be now Villa boards a
  53. great cheap and easy way to keep the
  54. garden bed off the fence you don't want
  55. the soil in contact with the palings and
  56. lend up rotting and I'll wash through
  57. all these gaps India neighbors and
  58. you'll lose a friend but by putting this
  59. up you can retain the garden bed now you
  60. can't do this if you had a sloping block
  61. and you're retaining everything but
  62. we're just retaining a garden bed like
  63. this the pressure and the weight is
  64. going down not to the sides so this
  65. isn't going to knock over your fence
  66. I'll just take it off with a couple of
  67. nails work my way along and when we
  68. backfill you won't even see it
  69. now the versa wall is dead easy to put
  70. up you start with a good foundation I'm
  71. using rebase the recycled Roe base I
  72. only need a hundred mil deep for what
  73. I'm putting up three courses and I've
  74. gone the 400 wide so I can fit my wacker
  75. e I get this as level as I can but I
  76. don't go over the top screening it I
  77. just want to make sure the sand and
  78. cement that I'm putting down is nice and
  79. even if it's even it's strong you can
  80. hire a whacker for about 60 bucks for
  81. half a day and it's important that you
  82. go over it a couple of times if it's
  83. really dry dampen it down and if it's
  84. too wet that's sticking to your plate
  85. compact up well you can throw it out a
  86. little bit of sand over the top and
  87. that's just like greasing a team
  88. now the sand cement mixer you'll want to
  89. screed over the top of your road base is
  90. pretty simple but just do six and one
  91. six and one cement and when you mix it
  92. up you do it dry now this sand here is
  93. washed River scent you can use that you
  94. can use paving sin you can use any sin
  95. you've got lying around
  96. the best thing about these walls is you
  97. don't have to man up between each joint
  98. they lock into each other because of all
  99. these lugs here and the corners are
  100. super strong now when you're ordering
  101. your wall one thing to take into
  102. consideration of the corners there are
  103. right and left corners if you see the
  104. back of this one it's completely
  105. different to just a normal block what
  106. that is is a little groove for the next
  107. block to lock into so this is a right
  108. meeting we're turning right and going
  109. down there at the other end we'll use a
  110. left and on the next course we'll use
  111. the left so we get that bond hackney
  112. they just butt into each other we slide
  113. one into there and then we'll set up the
  114. string line the next course will be the
  115. exact opposite
  116. once you set your corner up you set your
  117. string line back up and a good tip to
  118. stop it moving around because when you
  119. lay in the box you'll bang it constantly
  120. is grab a piece of paper I'll just use
  121. something I've torn off or cement bag
  122. and that keeps it in place it's
  123. important when you lay your blocks that
  124. there is an air gap or bit even and as
  125. small as you can make it between your
  126. block and your string line if your block
  127. starts touching the string line you
  128. won't get a true reading and your wall
  129. will start to creep out up or down now
  130. for extra strength your back fill each
  131. course with a free draining aggregate
  132. this is just a blue metal but it works
  133. just as well if it's billed as rubble as
  134. long as it's fine now for the second
  135. corner there is one tip and one trick if
  136. you put the left hand block on top of
  137. that right hand block it looks good but
  138. look at this it wobbles and the reason
  139. why is because the standard block that
  140. runs through here has these eight lugs
  141. the first to hit the base of your
  142. corners so what you need to do is grab a
  143. sketch here or a hammer try the plate
  144. knock those two off and your left sits
  145. on top of your right no problem
  146. grab the frylock Jack all right now you
  147. got to fill the second course fill that
  148. up for us again mate and put a little
  149. bit behind it it kind of brings the
  150. footing up and around the side of the
  151. wall and encases it now being a
  152. free-standing garden bed we're not
  153. worried about drainage here but if it
  154. was a wall that was retaining a great
  155. big property and you had seepage coming
  156. in behind it you would backfill with
  157. blue metal like that and an egg line
  158. you have to stop the soil going through
  159. the wall I'm going to add some geo
  160. fabric the Geo fabric let water go
  161. through but not the soil and silk
  162. keeping a garden bed where you want to
  163. be now we've managed to build the whole
  164. wall and only had one cut which is
  165. cutting a block in half so we can start
  166. off and finish with stretcher bond but
  167. when it comes to the capping we need to
  168. get miters in the corner so it looks
  169. like a professionals done it but if you
  170. have a look at the blocks they're longer
  171. than they are wide so if you went from
  172. corner to corner you get a cut that was
  173. touching of it at the outside and big
  174. wide gaps at the back well the easiest
  175. way to do it is without a tape measure
  176. and without a ruler you just find the
  177. corner of the two blocks and line it up
  178. what you see here is the excess in the
  179. excess where they dissect each other and
  180. cross here if we make a mark there and a
  181. mark in the corner and cut that off and
  182. then do the opposite on the bottom paper
  183. what we're left with is a perfectly
  184. merry 45-degree joint that makes it look
  185. like you got the praising brick saws and
  186. chain saws are probably the two scariest
  187. tools I use if you've never played with
  188. one before see if you've got a mate or a
  189. mate who's a tradesman you can come
  190. around and keep an eye on you while
  191. you're learning this skill the problems
  192. that go with it if you don't put your
  193. block in or your brick or your paver and
  194. dead square when you're cutting and you
  195. get a bit skew if it can fly anywhere so
  196. it's definitely not a spectator sport
  197. and you definitely need to have your
  198. personal protective gear eyes hands and
  199. your ears are a dead minimum all right
  200. what I do is I light it up dry yep that
  201. looks good I'm just taking you away that
  202. black mark turn it on
  203. as the water
  204. see I've got the larger piece and the
  205. smaller piece these are the keepers for
  206. the capping I set the corner first just
  207. on some liquid nails it's good if you've
  208. given the cat's time to dry because it
  209. will bond quicker for you but start with
  210. the corner look at that I should go into
  211. the block building business
  212. remember I started by saying if you
  213. start level you're finished level well
  214. look at that there she's nice and level
  215. what a difference a weekend makes this
  216. backyard is now a garden and it's got
  217. all the structure it needs to hide the
  218. fence in the shed in no time at all
  219. and the best thing about it if you're
  220. entertaining you've got seating along
  221. here for about 20 people and it's
  222. rock-solid it's not going to go anywhere
  223. the plants are high enough that the kids
  224. can play all the sport they like and the
  225. balls and the bats aren't going to go
  226. flying into the garden bed
  227. these Lily please with a bit of water
  228. they could be five meters tall in a
  229. couple of years for more information on
  230. all my DIY projects simply go to ed bro
  231. masonry comte you and get all the fact
  232. sheets and download them from there plus
