  1. “One day it happened that we were beside a body of water, and we saw the beast totally surrounded, so that there was no way it could escape.
  2.
  3. ‘The oldest of my sons was holding a lance, standing nearer to the beast than his brothers, and the youngest of my sons called to him, ‘Strike! strike! And we’ll see what it carries in its body, from which these cries emerge.’
  4.
  5. “He heeded his brother and the others, who were saying the same thing, and he struck the beast through the left thigh, for he couldn’t strike it anywhere else. When it felt itself stricken, it gave a frightful cry, after which there came out of the water a man blacker than pitch, with eyes red as live coals, who took the lance with which the beast had been stricken and struck the one of my sons who had struck it with such a great blow that he killed him. And the second, then the third, then the fourth, then the fifth. And then he went into the water, so that I never saw him again.
