  1. >You pace back and forth through the living room, glancing anxiously at the clock every so often.
  2. >12:37pm.
  3. >You’ve been up and working away for hours, setting everything up for the perfect day.
  4. >Even with your limited budget, you’ve done your best to put a good display on for Natsuki’s birthday.
  5. >Some balloons, a nice banner, the works.
  6. >Your eyes shift to the wrapped boxes on the coffee table.
  7. >Will she even like them?
  8. >What if she doesn’t like them!
  9. >You take a deep breath. If anything it’s not worth worrying about, you don’t have the time or money to buy anything else.
  10. >A beeping coming from the kitchen catches your attention.
  11. >You almost dive over the couch like some Bond movie star and dash into the kitchen.
  12. >Almost ripping the oven door off of its hinges, you pull the trey out and set it on the stovetop.
  13. >The red velvet cake is a little blackened around the rim, but otherwise it looks fine!
  14. “Shit..”
  15. “She won’t notice if it’s a little crispy.”
  16. >Lying to yourself will only get you so far. Natsuki’s keen palette will surely pick it up in a heartbeat.
  17. >Maybe if you cover it with icing, it’ll beat out the burnt taste.
  18. >You load up your piping bag with white icing.
  19. >Glancing at the clock again. 1pm.
  20. >You should probably give her a call soon enough.
  21. >Soon enough you’ve coated the cake in a nice layer of icing.
  22. >You swap nozzles, moving from the generic one to a stylistic one that makes flower shapes if used right.
  23. >The idea is to make a nice ring of flowers along the outside, with a few strawberries here and there in the middle of each slice.
  24. >It doesn’t pan out as planned however, most of the flowers look all kinds of wonky.
  25. >At least the strawberries are fine!
  26. >All in all, the cake ends up looking good. At least by your standards.
  27. >Time for the final detail.
  28. >You pull a “19” candle from its wrapping and place it in the centre of the cake.
  29. >Stepping back, you admire your work.
  30. >Hopefully she likes it, all things considered.
  31.
  32. >You pull your phone out of your pocket and call Natsuki.
  33. >She picks up almost immediately.
  34. “Hey, Natsuki?”
  35. >”Anon! What’s up?”
  36. “You’re still coming over today, right?”
  37. >”Yeah, I’m just getting ready now actually.”
  38. >”Where the hell are my shoes?”
  39. “Alright, well hurry up. Alright?”
  40. >”Yeah yeah, I’ll be over in a minute.”
  41. “See you soon then, honey.”
  42. >She goes quiet for a moment.
  43. >”Yeah, See you.”
  44. >She hangs up. You slip your phone back into your pocket and sigh.
  45. >Might as well freshen up a little before she arrives.
  46. >As you dry your face off you hear your doorbell ring.
  47. >You almost trip over yourself rushing down the stairs.
  48. >You open the door and greet the little pink girl on your doorstep.
  49. “Hey Natsuki.”
  50. >”Hey!”
  51. >She smiles up at you as you usher her inside.
  52. “Go on into the living room. Make yourself at home.”
  53. >You lock the front door before following her into the living room.
  54. >Natsuki stands there, taking in the entire scene.
  55. >You stand behind her, your hands on her shoulders.
  56. “Happy birthday, Natsuki.”
  57. >”A-Anon..”
  58. >She turns to you. Stars sparkling in her eyes as she looks up at you, mouth agape slightly in shock.
  59. >”You really didn’t have to.”
  60. “I wanted to celebrate your birthday.”
  61. “Together.”
  62. >Natsuki throws her arms around you and hugs you tightly.
  63. >Her voice is a little muffled as her face is buried into your chest.
  64. >”I… I mean the presents, the balloons.”
  65. >”I haven’t had a birthday like this since I was like four.”
  66. >You close an arm around her and bring a hand up to stroke her hair.
  67. >You can feel your shirt going damp as Natsuki’s eyes begin to water.
  68. “Hey.”
  69. >Natsuki pulls her head out of your chest and looks up at you again, tears forming at the ends of her eyes.
  70. >She chokes on her words as she tries to suppress her sobs.
  71. >”A-Anon I-“
  72. >You silence her by pressing your lips against hers, kissing her deeply.
  73. >As you pull away, Natsuki sighs a little.
  74.
  75. “I love you, Natsuki.”
  76. “So I wanted to give you a proper birthday.”
  77. “The kind of birthday you deserve.”
  78. >Natsuki shakes her head at you.
  79. >”I love you too, you massive dweeb.”
  80. >You feel a slight blush creep across your face as Natsuki stands on her toes to kiss you again.
  81. >She gives you a tearful smile as she lands on the flats of her feet again.
  82. “C’mon. Let’s open your presents.”
  83. >Natsuki kneels down and the coffee table and grabs the nearest present.
  84. >You sit on the floor next to her as she turns it in her hands.
  85. >”Anon you really didn’t need to get me anything.”
  86. >She begins tearing the wrapping paper off, revealing a small plush bear!
  87. >It’s the typical, overly corny bear holding a heart that says “I love you.”
  88. >You notice her shoot a glance at you as her face begins to turn red.
  89. >”A bear, Anon? Really?”
  90. >She giggles.
  91. >”That’s so cheesy!”
  92. >Nevertheless, she cuddles it quickly before setting it on the table. Before reaching for the second box.
  93. >You watch her rip the paper off with anticipation.
  94. >The second present is a box of fancy cooking utensils!
  95. >Not the generic, dollar store stuff either. This is the real deal, Jordan Gamsey stuff.
  96. >Her voice raises as she shakes the present in her hands.
  97. >”Oh my god Anon! How much did these even cost?!”
  98. >”Jordan Gamsey isn’t cheap stuff at all. He’s one of the best chefs of all time!”
  99. “So I noticed. You never stop yammering on about him when we bake together.”
  100. >Natsuki is taken slightly aback! Shocked at the realisation that you actually listen to her.
  101. >”Anon..”
  102. “Open the last one.”
  103. >She nods as she reaches for the last box, the smallest one of the three.
  104. >She opens it as a wide grin splits across your face.
  105. “Remember, about a couple months ago you said you could never afford something that made you look beautiful.”
  106. “And I said that ‘You already look beautiful to me.’”
  107. >”You already look beautiful to me..”
  108. >”And I tried to argue that I wasn’t. Because I had nothing fancy.”
  109.
  110. >Natsuki opens the velvet box, gasping loudly as her eyes find a necklace inside.
  111. >A golden chain ending in a small, heart shaped pendant. A shining gem encrusted in the centre.
  112. >She takes it out and admires it.
  113. >”It’s so pretty..”
  114. “Fitting, don’t you thing.”
  115. >”Oh shush!”
  116. “Put it on.”
  117. >She sets the box down and unhooks the necklace, placing it around her neck.
  118. >”Gimmie a hand.”
  119. >You take the ends of the necklace and piece them together.
  120. >Using a hand, you brush her pink hair out of the way and plant a soft kiss on the back of her neck.
  121. >She turns to you.
  122. >”How does it look?”
  123. >You give her a genuine smile.
  124. “It looks great on you, honey.”
  125. >She smiles back at you.
  126. “Sorry I couldn’t get you much. I didn’t have a whole lot of money so this is all I could afford.”
  127. >Natsuki shakes her head once more.
  128. >”You dummy.”
  129. >She beats a fist against your chest.
  130. >”Y’know, the only thing I really wanted was you.”
  131. >She pulls you into another hug.
  132. >”I love you, Anon.”
  133. >”Thank you.”
  134. “It’s nothing, Natsuki.”
  135. >”No shut up. It is! It means a great deal to me!”
  136. >You pull away from the hug and stand up.
  137. “Then wait til you see this, stay here.”
  138. >You walk into the kitchen and quickly cut two slides out of the velvet cake that’s been cooling.
  139. >Placing them on separate plates, you carry them back into the living room and set one in front of her.
  140. “You taught me so much about baking, so I tried to make something in return.”
  141. >She looks over the slice of cake, examining your baking skills.
  142. >You pray to any and all gods you can think of that she doesn’t notice the burnt bits covered with icing.
  143. >Natsuki takes a bite and chews.
  144. >Suddenly her face lights up.
  145. >”It’s not bad!”
  146. >She takes another bite, talking through her full mouth.
  147. >”It actually tastes pretty good.”
  148. >You smile at her compliment before taking a bite of your own slice.
  149. >She’s not wrong!
  150. >In no time at all she’s made it towards the end of the slice, where your fate will be sealed.
  151. >She bites into it.
  152.
  153. >Her face scrunches up, she glares up at you.
  154. >”Anon.”
  155. >You let out a nervous chuckle.
  156. “Y-Yeah..?”
  157. >”You burnt it along the edges, didn’t you?”
  158. “Yeah I did.”
  159. >She pops the rest of the cake into her mouth and finishes it.
  160. >”Amateur mistakes.”
  161. >”You’re not a pro like me! So I’ll let you off this time, just because I love you.”
  162. >Her face softens up a little.
  163. >”I’m pulling your leg a bit. I’m proud of you for trying Anon.”
  164. “Ha, thanks Natsuki.”
  165. >She sets the plate down and sighs.
  166. >”I still can’t believe you did all this just for me, Anon.”
  167. >You point at the envelope on the table.
  168. “You haven’t read your card yet.”
  169. >”Oh right. I didn’t notice it, sorry.”
  170. >She takes it and opens it.
  171. “I wrote a little something inside. I hope you like it.”
  172.
  173. ---
  174.
  175. I baked a cake just for you
  176. To commemorate your special day
  177. With sprinkles and gumdrops
  178. And nineteen candles burning away
  179.
  180. I did my best to follow your tips
  181. And although our skills are miles apart
  182. I tried to put together something sweet
  183. A baked treat that comes from the heart
  184.
  185. Blow out the candles and make a wish
  186. Hold it close and don't let go
  187. Tell not a soul what you wished for
  188. Because no one is supposed to know
  189.
  190. That's what makes wishes come true
  191. I'd know that more than well
  192. Because one birthday I wished for you
  193.
  194. ---
  195.
  196. >Natsuki closes the card slowly and sets it on the table.
  197. >She’s still.
  198. “Natsuki?”
  199. >Suddenly she turns and lunges into you, knocking you onto the ground.
  200. >Her arms wrap around you, planting her lips right on yours.
  201. >She pulls away after a long, passionate kiss.
  202. >Burying her head into your neck, she lets out a sigh that wavers slightly as tears begin to well in her eyes again.
  203. >You feel the wet of her tears against your neck as you hug her back.
  204. >”Thank you Anon.”
  205. >”Thank you so much.”
  206. >”I love you.”
  207. “I love you too, Natsuki.”
  208. “Happy birthday.”
  209.
  210.
  211. Happy birthday, Natsuki. I love you so much.
