58. Before Spartacus struck down his first opponent in the arena, there were many gladiators who passed through the gates onto the sand.'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena' tells the story of the original Champion of the House of Batiatus: Gannicus, in a more ruthless time before Spartacus' arrival where honor was just finding its way into the arena.
 59. In the time before the arrival of Spartacus, the House of Batiatus faces many challenges from competitors, and within its own household.
 60. These series of Spartacus are just so funny. Believe me, have a drink, get in the mood and just laugh your socks off at the over-the-top macho bull s***. It's so funny. They must have employed the worst script-writers of the Rambo movies. They've combined them with the best, most outlandish bits of "300" and "Gladiator" (they've even stolen lines from these I'm sure)but the result is just awesome entertainment and humor. HA HA HA! Characters are all one-sided, the plots are so thin you can see what's coming an hour away but...that just makes it better. It's so cra..y but good at the same time.

If you want real Rome and Roman society, see that series which was infinitely more complex. But I suppose they had to dumb it down for the plebs and teenagers to understand. Well they have, and they've done a good job of it if entertainment is all you are after. I'm enjoying being an adolescent again. Enjoy.
 61. Like many productions that followed, even though this series was obviously somewhat inspired by Ridley Scott's epic Gladiator, the storyline is original. As expected with a series of this kind, there's lots of well executed action, (perhaps an excessive amount of blood at times) plenty of good actors and sensual sex scenes. Although I must say I wasn't too keen on John Hannah's character constantly using the 'F' word, which seemed rather unnecessary.

The choice of lighting, color grading and style of filming is similar to 300, but again it's still interesting and the plot is original. And speaking of 300 I particularly liked Peter Mensah, who was in very good physical form for this and portrayed a very sympathetic character.

Some of the sets could have been better, however overall a very enjoyable series and if I could I would give it an 8.5 if I could.

 63. This miniseries takes place roughly 5 years before Spartacus' enslavement. It's recommended you watch them in the order they aired:

Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena

Spartacus: Vengeance

Spartacus: War of the Damned

While this miniseries is a prequel to Blood and Sand, the very beginning and very end of Gods of the Arena spoil the ending to Blood and Sand. Also, there are some characters and plot developments that stem from Gods of the Arena in Vengeance. So it's recommended you watch this miniseries before Vengeance to understand them. For Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena, no.This was a six episode prequel season to the first season of Spartacus: Blood And Sand. A second and third season of Blood and Sand has finished airing and they are titled "Spartacus: Vengeance" and "Spartacus: War Of The Damned" respectively. WotD is the final season of the series. Like "Spartacus: Blood and Sand", Extended Version were released on Blu-ray that feature more violence, nudity and also extended plot sequences that are missing in the TV versions. d6a2afd33b
