HGSS 9 Ribbons Speedrun FAQ

Q: What are you playing on, it is emulator?
A: No, I play on a DS (phat) with a capture board installed from http://3dscapture.com/ds/

Q: What is a 9 ribbon run?
A: Beating the game , collecting 9 Ribbons along the run

Q: Where are the ribbons & how do you collect them?
A: You get given the legend ribbon after beating red, 7 other ribbons are given to you by the weekday siblings after you obtain all of the weekday items and the final ribbon is effort ribbon given to you for maxing out your EV's

Heres how you get the 9 ribbons for those interested
Alert Ribbon - Obtained from Monica after you have received the sharp beak from her. Can only be done on Mondays
Shock Ribbon - Obtained from Tuscany after you have received the twisted spoon from her. Can only be done on Tuesdays
Downcast Ribbon - Obtained from Wesly after you have received the black belt from him. Can only be done on Wednesday
Careless Ribbon - Obatined from Arthur after you have received the hard stone from him. Can only be done on Thursdays
Relax Ribbon - Obtained from Frida after you have received the poison barb from her. Can only be done on Fridays
Snooze Ribbon - Obtained from Santos after you have received the soft sand from him. Can only be done on Saturday
Smile Ribbon - Obtained from Sunny after you have received the Magnet from her. Can only be done on Sunday
Legend Ribbon - Defeat Red at Mt. Silver
Effort ribbon  - Maxing out your EV's on one Pokemon

Q: Why not more then 9 ribbons?
A: Only these 9 ribbons make sense getting there are 5 more to get in hgss being
Ability Ribbon - A Ribbon awarded for defeating the Tower Tycoon at the Battle Tower
Great Ability Ribbon - A Ribbon awarded for defeating the Tower Tycoon at the Battle Tower for the second time
Double Ability Ribbon - A Ribbon awarded for completing the Battle Tower Double challenge.
Multi Ability Ribbon - A Ribbon awarded for completing the Battle Tower Multi challenge.
World Ability Ribbon - A Ribbon awarded for completing the Wi-Fi Battle Tower challenge.
These ribbons would take along time to get so im excluding them from the run, they are all in the frontier tower


Q: Why are you resetting? You haven't even left your house!
A: Now that I'm using RNG manipulation to get a good Cyndaquil, I need to start the game at a specific time. My Trainer ID tells me whether I've timed it correctly (Correct Seed) - if the ID isn't 39391, I reset.

Q: What is RNG Manipulation?
A: RNG manipulation is used in this speedrun, which involves resetting on a specific second starting from a specific time, and hitting the correct frame for the correct seed after resetting. This allows me to get a Cyndaquil with almost perfect stats. I can also manipulate zero encounters up the the old man running shoes guide and beyond if I do my movement correctly.

Q: Why do you choose Cyndaquil?
A: Because the Cyndaquil deals with the early game very well, with sprout tower being forced in HGSS its the most consistent and fastest starter to get up to the Lake Of Rage

Q: Why Soul Silver over heart gold?
A: Extra rare Candy in whirl islands

Q: Why do you play as the girl?
A: The counterpart does the catching tutorial, and the male does it faster, so it’s faster to choose the female for yourself - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI1-PJ7Sy1w

Q: Why do you name yourself and Cyndaquil/Raikou one character?
A: Because it's faster to name them one character for text purposes.

Q: Are there glitches in this run?
A: There are glitches in this game, but this is a glitchless run.


Q: What is a "spinner"?
A: A spinner is a trainer that randomly looks in each direction.  These spinning trainers cost precious time on account of extra time battling.
