  4. Note 1: I'm not considering formats where less than one-third of the participating teams advance to the next round (in this case, 8 teams)
  5. Note 2: The only definitely relevant group matches are matches for determining who qualifies to advance to the next round. Group matches between already eliminated teams and/or already qualified teams whose seeds in the next round have been decided are irrelevant. Depending on the situation, group matches for determining seeding may or may not be irrelevant.
  6.
  7. Some possible knockout formats for the second round:
  8.
  9. 8 team knockouts: Quarter-finals
  10. Pros: Power of 2 so no byes, lowest number of knockout matches
  11. Cons: A lot of meaningless matches between eliminated teams, fewer teams get to advance
  12.
  13. 12 team knockouts: 4 teams receive byes to quarter-finals, the rest have to go through one extra knockout match
  14. Pros: Balance between relevant matches for qualifying and for seeding, and number of teams who advance
  15. Cons: Needs to use byes
  16.
  17. 16 team knockouts: Octo-finals (round of 16)
  18. Pros: Power of 2 so no byes, more teams get to advance
  19. Cons: Later group matches which only determine seeding may or may not be considered irrelevant, highest number of knockout matches

  23. List of options
  24.
  25.
  26. Options 1-3: 4 groups of 6
  27. Pros: 5 guaranteed games per team
  28. Cons: A lot of games for streamers, high chance of irrelevant games later on
  29.
  30. -Option 1 (68 matches): Top 2 advance to 8 team knockouts
  31. -Option 2 (72 matches): Top 3 advance to 12 team knockouts; group winners receive byes
  32. -Option 3 (76 matches): Top 4 advance to 16 team knockouts
  33.
  34.
  35. Options 4-6: 8 groups of 3 (each team plays the others twice)
  36. Pros: 4 guaranteed matches (5 for option 6), possibility of hype rematches of close games, ease of determining knockout participants
  37. Cons: Still a lot of matchs to stream, possibility of boring double blowouts, even higher chance of irrelevant games later on
  38.
  39. -Option 4 (56 matches): Winners advance to 8 team knockouts (CONCACAF Champions League format)
  40. -Option 5 (64 matches): Top 2 advance to 16 team knockouts
  41. -Option 6 (72 matches): All advance to 24 team knockouts; group winners receive byes
  42.
  43.
  44. Options 7-9: 8 groups of 3 (each team plays the others once)
  45. Pros: Fewer matches to stream, ease of determining knockout participants
  46. Cons: Only 2 guaranteed matches (except for option 9 which has 3), last match may be irrelevant for options 7 and 9
  47.
  48. -Option 7 (32 matches): Winners advance to 8 team knockouts
  49. -Option 8 (40 matches): Top 2 advance to 16 team knockouts
  50. -Option 9 (48 matches): All advance to 24 team knockouts; group winners receive byes
  51.
  52.
  53. Options 10-18: 6 groups of 4
  54. Pros: Most familiar option (especially option 18), quite balanced between match count and match relevance
  55. Cons: Hardest to fairly seed into knockouts unless byes or an extra round with groups of 3 is used. Option 10's groups may have only 1 team advancing
  56.
  57. -Option 10 (44+ matches): Group winners + 2 best second-placed teams advance to 8 team knockouts. May take more matches if playoffs are used to determine (eg. 2 groups of 3 with winners advancing will take 6 more matches)
  58.
  59. -Options 11-16: Top 2 in each group advance to 2nd round (12 teams advance)
  60. --Option 11 (48 matches): 12 team knockout, best 4 group winners receive byes
  61. --Option 12 (52 matches): 4 groups of 3, group winners advance to 4 team knockouts (1982 FIFA World Cup format)
  62. --Option 13 (56 matches): 4 groups of 3, top 2 advance to 8 team knockouts
  63.
  64. --Options 14-17: 12 team playoff, winners advance (6 teams advance)
  65. ---Option 14 (50 matches): 2 groups of 3, winners advance to final, runners-up advance to 3rd place playoff (1974/1978 FIFA World Cup format had 2 groups of 4 doing this)
  66. ---Option 15 (51 matches): One more knockout round, winners advance to final round of group of 3, losers advance to 4th place playoff
  67. ---Option 16 (52 matches): 2 groups of 3, top 2 advance to 4 team knockouts
  68. ---Option 17 (57 matches): Group of 6 round-robin
  69.
  70. -Option 18 (52 matches): Top 2 in each group + 4 best third-placed teams advance to 16 team knockouts (1986-1994 FIFA World Cup format)
  71.
  72.
  73. Options 19-23: Knockout rounds
  74. Pros: Least matches to stream
  75. Cons: Only 1 guaranteed match per team
  76.
  77. -Option 19 (24 matches): 24 team knockout; random teams or (if applicable) top 8 teams from past performance receive byes
