- Kapitel 1
Er (referring back to der Körper) treibt (intransitive=float, transitive=abstractly make sth to move, see https://german.stackexchange.com/questions/20703/what-is-the-meaning-of-the-german-verb-treiben) nur so lange (conj, solange + wie = as long as) an der Wasseroberfläche, wie Luft in den Lungen vorhanden (existing, present, available) ist.
- : The human body, even it consists of about 60 percent of water, it is not floatable by itself. It only floats on the water surface as long as there is air in the lung. As soon as the air leaves the body, it will sink slowly to the ground. Is the water so cold or deep, it then stays there through a sombre dissolution process for years.
- : Wenn das Wasser aber warm genug ist, um Bakterien Lebensraum zu (in order to, subjects are the same, otherwise damit) bieten, dann verwest (decompose, rot) er. In den Eingenweiden (guts) entstehen (arise) Gase, die dem Körper Auftrieb (buoyancy, the thing that makes things float) geben, sodass er an die Oberfläche zurückkehrt.
- : When the water is warm enough to provide the bacteria a place to survive, then it rots. Gas arises from the guts, which gives the body buoyancy, so that it floats back to the surface.
- : Dann erheben sich ganz buchstäblich die Toten.
- :
