  2. The purpose of this lab is to completely design and analyze a foam-core wing for aerodynamic loading conditions. In the lab, the main process for designing the wing involves minimizing the weight of the beam, while maximizing the load bearing capacity. This is done by finding the maximum allowable shear stress and normal stress at each point along the beam, and choosing a corresponding width value. By doing so, the weight is minimized and an optimal planform shape is revealed. After the necessary preparations and calculations, the wing is cut and experimentally tested using a wiffle tree to simulate aerodynamic loading. The results of the loading test are closely compared to the predicted results to make sure the wing performed as expected.
