  10. “With a bright and sunny modern pop sound, Tenth Avenue North (the group took its name from a major road in the West Palm Beach, FL area where the band was originally formed) have become one of the brightest lights on the contemporary Christian music scene. Led by Mike Donehey’s vocals and songwriting, the group released three independent albums, 2002’s Broken Down, 2003’s Don’t Look Back, and 2005’s Speaking of Silence, and an EP, 2006’s God with Us, before signing with Reunion Records and releasing Over and Underneath in 2008 and The Light Meets the Dark in 2010. A concert set, Live: Inside and In Between, appeared in 2001, with another studio effort, The Struggle, following in 2012.

  15. “Good, not new — a familiar but pleasant AC worship sound characterizes this quartet’s much-hyped debut. A quick perusal of the song titles reveals that the band keeps things simple. The breadth and depth of subjects do not approach a degree that would be considered challenging or groundbreaking, yet the realization that the songs address common themes tends to work in their favor. Without expecting them to turn Christian music upside down, you can enjoy the disc the way it was intended: as a means of emphasizing faith-based messages in a straightforward, contemporary pop vein. There’s enough songwriting talent here to dig deeper on future releases, as the thoroughly enjoyable “Break Me Down” proves in its first ten seconds. What holds them back is the undeniable aligning of their sound to what was dominating CCM radio at the time of its release. The “chicken vs. egg” question comes to mind: are more bands purposefully sounding like what’s on the radio, or are radio producers choosing to play the songs that sound most like what they already keep in heavy rotation? All in all, Tenth Avenue North deserve the buzz as long as you remember that “the next big thing” isn’t exactly a big surprise.

  34. “These guys know a thing or two about momentum. Their highly anticipated follow-up, The Light Meets the Dark, was released barely two weeks after the group won the Gospel Music Association’s most hallowed prize, the Dove Award for Song of the Year. The Florida trio also knows something about expectations, which reached practically stratospheric levels prior to its sophomore record’s release. Knowing this, the band turned to a trio of producers, Jason Ingram, Rusty Varenkamp, and Phillip LaRue, who between them had attacked contemporary praise & worship music from practically every angle possible, working with artists as varied as MUTEMATH, David Crowder Band, Leeland, and Bebo Norman. The result is staggering. The Light Meets the Dark mixes praise & worship with intricately emotional pop sentiment that hasn’t been heard since Jars of Clay’s 1995 debut. Deeply personal cuts like “Healing Begins,” “On and On,” and “Any Other Way” bring to mind the powerful sensitivity of Jars classics such as “Like a Child” and “Worlds Apart.” It also doesn’t hurt that lead singer Mike Donehey’s voice bears a striking resemblance to Dan Haseltine’s, or that his stream-of-consciousness songwriting is just as poetic and lyrical. The album also benefits from a timely sound sure to win over congregations. From top to bottom, The Light Meets the Dark is a tremendous achievement for not only Donehey and crew but for all of contemporary Christian music.

  53. “Tenth Avenue North’s modern worship, a cross between Casting Crowns and Jars of Clay, finds even more traction in a live worship setting. This EP, recorded live in Charleston, South Carolina, shows the contemporary Christian band at its most personal, but more importantly, it shows how far they’ve come in the three short years since their debut. The CD/DVD combo finds lead singer Mike Donehey freely interacting with the crowd, and pumping plenty of emotion into extended renditions of favorites like “You Are More,” “Love Is Here,” “Healing Begins,” and more. Inside and In Between is a solid companion piece for fans; the only downside is its brevity (just six songs on the CD, hardly an adequate tribute to the band’s depth and staying power).

  67. “Seamlessly merging praise & worship-themed songs with a bright alternative pop sound, and grounding things in real-life situations, Tenth Avenue North take praise & worship in a more personal and individual direction while still leaving a lot of room for spirituality and collective hope. This set was road-tested live, with the band urging audience members to sing along on the choruses, and those varied audience contributions are actually here on the record, a sort of massed fan choir for the band. The result is Tenth Avenue North’s best release yet.
