It seems like the morphing might be partially out of a demon's control. Just in general I could see otherwise friendly characters like Charlie accidentally spooking people when they get excited. I think it's canon that Charlie has never seen a living human in the flesh before, since she was born in Hell. Just imagine being the first one she met.

At minimum it seems that Charlie may be capable of accidently slipping into her "demonic" form during emotion outbursts or moments of extreme emotions, as was demonstrated during her song and dance routine.

However no other character in the pilot, comic and HB, has slipped into their demonic form, partially or otherwise, by accident, even in very intense circumstances.

In fact, in one of the background pictures in the Hotel we see Charlie with her old boyfriend in the background, and in that pic she has demonic horns protruding out. That could suggest either

>her more demonic features are naturally occurring, and she has to will them away knowingly
or
>she was very emotionally excited when the picture was taken, perhaps being so close with her boyfriend and some other unknown background information.

Maybe the horns were a style thing? It was for a formal occasion, so she let her horns out to look snazzier for the big event?

Also a distinct possibility, must be a rare occasion since there's no other picture of her with her horns out.

I would wager that for regular sinners that transforming into their demonic forms is a very taxing and exhausting process which usually results in it being very rarely done even during combat or high stress scenarios. Charlie may be one of the exceptions due to her parentage. Just an inference though.
