You are the light of my life. That single and steadfast guiding glow that pulls me forward even when the world weighs on me like an anchor. You’re the direction in the darkness, that solitary voice in the crowd that I can hear even when the world and its worries are a cacophony, and you call me to you as a flame does a moth. You’re the second wind I get when I can’t take another step, you’re the mantra my mind chants when I just need to go a little further, you’re the single, unwavering image I hold onto in my mind when the chaos of life crowds me and makes me overwhelmed. You’re the push I need to take the first step, the hand to hold as I make my way up this tumultuous mountain, and you’re the prize at the summit, the destiny and the dream, the game and the goal. On this journey of life, you’re the path and the destination, and I both wouldn’t rather be making this trek with anyone else… nor would I do anything so daunting and scary if it were for anyone less than you.

You’re the confidence I need to be able to say this in the first place. You ease the unrest in me that would keep me from saying all this; you silence the sarcasm that would stop me from trying to be so poetic. You remind me that I’m cool enough as is, and that real confidence comes in speaking the truth in my heart… no matter how nonsensical and corny it may seem. You see worth in my rambling and gold in my copper, and when I can’t quite see the same thing I close my eyes, take your hand and trust in your vision. I can’t always be strong enough to handle everything, and when those moments take me I know you’ll gladly be my strength, and when I can’t believe that I can do it, I can believe you when you say I can.

When I think about holding you, I wonder how these arms could ever protect you from the world and its worries… but when I hold you, I feel like an unbreakable shield, a mountain that can withstand any force. When I think about letting you hold me, I wonder how I could ever burden you with my life and my sorrows… but when you hold me, I feel like not only does the world not matter, but that it doesn’t exist, and there’s nothing but the safety of your arms. When I think about you looking at me, I wonder how you can stomach such a sight… but when you do, I feel like a superstar being adored by his most devout fan. When I think about looking at you, I wonder how I will ever manage to meet your gaze. When I look at you, I wonder how I will ever manage to look away again. When I think about laying with you, I wonder how I could ever please one as perfect as you… but when I’m there, on top of you, with your hungry eyes on me… I feel like a God.

When I first met you, you shone so bright I was blinded by the very sight of you… and when the initial dazzle wore off, I realized it was just a matter of time until you realized who I really am, and that I’m not whoever those bright and beautiful eyes see when they look at me. I tried to push you away, and you said no… though it wounded you, you still smiled. Even then, you were my light. Whereas all I could see was the inevitable doom and gloom at the end of the line, you showed me the place between now and then where our smiles were real and our love was true. In my panic, all I could see was the future, while you taught me to focus on the moment, the now, the here. Were it not for you, I might have only seen the empty plate, and not the vast and succulent meal that currently inhabited it. Under your light, I learned that it’s okay to not be able to promise someone forever; no one can, just like no one can tell the future. All I know is that right here, right now, basking in your radiance… life is beautiful, the world is beautiful and, somehow, impossibly, inexplicably, and utterly inescapably… I am beautiful, too.

You are the light of my life and you shine brighter than Hope itself. With you, I can see the next step to get to where I need to be. With you, I could never be lost.
