- Connectors
- ---
- There are three types of connectors grammatically:
- - coordinating conjunctions, which connect two parallel structures (two nouns, two independent clauses, two prepositional phrases, etc.) in the same sentence
- - subordinating conjunctions, which connect a dependent clause or phrase with an independent (main) clause of the same sentence
- - sentence connectors, which show how a new sentence is related to the previous one(s)
- ---
- There are four types of meaning that these connectors can have:
- - additive (addition or emphasis)
- - contrastive (contrast or concession)
- - cause/effect (reason, result, or conditional)
- - sequence
- ---
- Many connectors can have more than one meaning.
- I have lived in Boston since I moved here. - sequence
- I need to buy an umbrella since I left mine at home. - cause/effect
- ---
- Homework: p. 188 - Choose a correct connector for each sentence (sometimes more than one answer is correct).
