  2. <compuboks> Hey, did Hak5 ever do a DIY home surveillance episode?
  3. <computerchris> hmm, I actually don't think so
  4. <compuboks> I'd like to build one on the cheap, with internal DVR and email on motion services
  5. <compuboks> Something linux based
  6. <compuboks> Just haven't done the research yet
  7. <computerchris> well in it's most basic form there is a package called motion
  8. <computerchris> I like blue iris but it's not free or linux
  9. <compuboks> If there's some sort of paid setup that works I'd go for it
  10. <compuboks> I have load of old hardware to run the thing
  11. <computerchris> ah ha!
  12. <computerchris> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLjVXn9UgN8
  13. <computerchris> I have only been watching since 2010
  14. <compuboks> Aha, thank you
  15. <klem> http://www.amazon.com/Newest-Super-Network-Video-Recorder/dp/B00KO89A86/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1441495890&sr=8-14&keywords=escam
  16. <klem> http://www.amazon.com/Escam-Security-Camera-Waterproof-Surveillance/dp/B00L7JYMNY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1441495917&sr=8-3&keywords=escam
  17. <compuboks> Do you use that setup?
  18. <compuboks> It looks promising
  19. <klem> yeah I do, I also work for a company that does professioal systems
  20. <compuboks> So DVR to USB storage is workable on that platform?
  21. <klem> with ONVIF (Open Netowk Video Interchange Forum (like JPG for surveillance)) the camera is responsible for motion detection. I'm only running 2 cameras. As you add more you'd want to go to ESATA
  22. <compuboks> Okay. Generally seems stable? Any issues?
  23. <klem> anyways, these cameras' motion detection kind of sucks, and the NVR doesn't seem to act on it very often.
  24. <klem> I don't have it doing e-mail though just beeping, but the NVR only beeps a couple of times a week
  25. <compuboks> You said you do higher end, any recomendations on that front?
  26. <compuboks> (probably out of my price range)
  27. <klem> However I also work on systems where each camera is $500+ and they aren't good at motion detection either.....ass for the email thing I'd have to dig into it to know how reliable it is
  28. <compuboks> Yeah, fair enough, I'm sure it can be iffy
  29. <klem> do you have a regular home alarm system?
  30. <compuboks> Negative
  31. <compuboks> This would be a new install
  32. <compuboks> More for personal rights protection.
  33. <klem> well start with that. traditional alarm systems have been dealing with nuisance alarms for years and have pretty good false positive rejection.
  34. <compuboks> Have a landlosd and an HOA with keys
  35. <compuboks> Want to know when someone drops by
  36. <compuboks> I can't really do down the tradititional alarm road
  37. <compuboks> Condo, renter
  38. <klem> you can get a Z-Wave or Zigbee door lock that will e-mail you every time the door is opened
  39. <compuboks> Need something low impact
  40. <compuboks> That's a start
  41. <klem> Or, you could use a raspberry pi and a z-wave door contact to email you.
  42. <compuboks> Have you seen any security issues whti those Schlage electrinic locks?
  43. <klem> Aeon labs USB Z-Wave stick is 44.95 on amazon, works with OpenHAB which runs on a Raspbery Pi. the door contacts are $15.00 at Lowes
  44. <compuboks> I know a bump key and pretty much fuck anything
  45. <compuboks> and = can
  46. <klem> I work in security professionally, I have issues with anything that will open a lock from outside the home, including traditional keys

  49. <compuboks> I work in Poperty Management professionally, specifically condos in a resort community. I have access to keys for over 200 properties
  50. <klem> anything that can unlock a lock without your physical presence on site, or that can be duplicated without your knowledge is a bad idea. That said if you've ever been to the Lockpick Village at any hacker con you know that physical keys are about useless, so each option is more like comparing the size of the gaping hole in your security, not whiat is secure and what isn't.
  51. <compuboks> I have one building with Kantech based access control
  52. <compuboks> yet have multiple keys that can bypass it
  53. <compuboks> Pretty much why I want a video solution
  54. <compuboks> because I trust noone and no locks ever
  55. <klem> yeah, I work with a couple different Kanteck systems, Millennium being one of them. its almost pure shit, and if you can bypass it, it was a poorly designed install to boot.
  56. <compuboks> The user interface for the Kantech 300 system I maintain is a fucking joke
  57. <compuboks> I've reset all the default passwords and tried to lock down remote access
  58. <compuboks> but there are still multiple ways to bypass it
  59. <compuboks> It annoys me
  60. <klem> well, for a single camera, I suggest either dropcam, because its backed-up off site and fairly high quallity (thought the NVR I posted is also capable of cloud backup) or regular hunter's trail cams, which come with a surprising amount of features and can be moved from property to property in the case of vacancies and such
  61. <compuboks> Trail cams were one thing I did not think about
  62. <compuboks> You feel dropcam is a fairly secure solution?
  63. <klem> some of them will email you when they snap a picture
  64. <compuboks> I'd really like something local, but Dropcam may make more sense.
  65. <compuboks> I've thought about on in the past
  66. <klem> well anything where you use the cloud is more secure against theft, not because they won't steal it, they will, but you'll still have video
  67. <compuboks> Fair point
  68. <compuboks> And If I'm more concerned about home intrusion generally, that may be the better way
  69. <compuboks> Verses, you know...other intrusions
  70. <klem> but like I said that $50 NVR I pointed out also has cloud storage....though I didn't play with it. If check YOUTUBE there are lots of instances where people catch theives in their homes useing dropcam
  71. <computerchris> So how does one get into the house?
  72. <compuboks> Could be pultiple ways.
  73. <computerchris> err, I didn't have my chat client scrolled down all the way
  74. <klem> usually kick down the door (if its even locked) or throw something through the sliding glass door in back
  75. <compuboks> Front door, two sliders, a bedroom window
  76. <compuboks> Main penetration points
  77. <computerchris> quick question, can I go down to like ace hardware and get a copy of my dorm key it says "keymark by madeco" on it"
  78. <klem> There is also a couple of different stand alone systems out there where its a camera and a motion detector with WiFi that will email you on alarm, then you can connect and have 2 way audio
  79. <computerchris> does not say do not duplicate
  80. <computerchris> but idk if they would have the blanks for that at
  81. <computerchris> or like if their machines can even cut one
  82. <computerchris> I'd like to make a copy and keep it hidden somewhere in my car just in case
  83. <klem> probably can't, more than likely its a custom keyway, which means the grooves on the side as spaced in such a way that only Medco can sell them and they won't sell to anyone who isn't a registered dealer and those registered dealers only sell to their lockset customers
  84. <compuboks> Medeco is supposed to be a high security key that requires magstrip cards and authorized locksmights to duplicate
  85. <klem> does one of the sides have a machined area where the grooves change width?
  86. <compuboks> Our local Fire Department used their locks
  87. <compuboks> for access vaults on private property
  88. * DIV1N3 (DIV1N3@secfo-88C36318.dhcp.mdfd.or.charter.com) has joined
  89. <compuboks> difficult to pick and duplicate
  90. <computerchris> does not appear to have a sidebar like primus keys do
  91. <compuboks> not impossiblew
  92. <klem> the vaults are called Knox Boxes, and yeah those are special lock boxes that contain the keys to each commercial building the box is located on
  93. <computerchris> on second look, there is something at the back near the sholder
  94. <compuboks> Check out Bosnianbill's youtube for more info on Medeco
  95. <compuboks> They're difficult to cut but not impossible to pick
  96. <computerchris> they have a weird keyway shape
  97. <klem> yeah, you'd be better off 'loosing' that key and getting a replacement from the school instead of trying to get that duplicated, however they might just change the lock and charge you for a new key for yourself and one for your roommate(s)
  98. <computerchris> I'm in a single
  99. <klem> lucky you
  100. <Foxtrot> forever alone
  101. <computerchris> and I think its like $250 if you lose the key
  102. <computerchris> let me check
  103. <compuboks> I know we get them reproduced for less than that
  104. <compuboks> for a Pool that uses Medeco
  105. <compuboks> More of a punitive charge
  106. <computerchris> so I am looking at finding a shade tree locksmith>
  107. <computerchris> ?
  108. <compuboks> It's supposed to be a secure system
  109. <compuboks> I doubt a "shadetree" locksmith would do it
  110. <compuboks> unless they want to wind up in jail
  111. <compuboks> But I may be wrong
  112. <klem> My daughter had a room to herself for a while at college, her assigned roommate got into an accident on the "Meet and Greet" day. They actually made her move into another room and left her original room empty as opposed to letting her have a single for the price of a double.
  113. <computerchris> well there is always shapeways, a caliper, and 3 or 4 rebisions
  114. <computerchris> someone else probably didn't show
  115. <computerchris> I actually got a working 3D printed primus key
  116. <klem> She ended up being great friends with the girl she moved in with, but it still would've been nice to let fate have her keep the room
  117. <klem> ABS plastic printed key??
  118. <compuboks> I( honestly don't know what is truly secure anymore
  119. <compuboks> In the physical property sense
  120. <computerchris> yep, I had to be careful with it
  121. <computerchris> but it did work
  122. <computerchris> there is a mit software you can use
  123. <compuboks> Doesn't surprise me
  124. <computerchris> just need to scan both sides of it
  125. * phantom has quit (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
  126. <compuboks> Did you have a copy of the original to copy from?
  127. <klem> http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-medeco-key-blanks-Real-Medeco-Stamped-Keys-Do-Not-Duplicate-/321852336413?hash=item4aefe4e91d
  128. * SgtStroopwafel has quit (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
  129. <computerchris> yeah I took the key home and scanned both sides on desktop scanner
  130. <compuboks> klem, stil need the machinery to make the dupes
  131. <computerchris> I think I need specifly keymark blanks
  132. <compuboks> Not a regular key machine
  133. <klem> maybe not, a set of files, a dremel and a vice is all you need
  134. <compuboks> Very true.
  135. <compuboks> Would you need a current physical copy of the key to pull it off?
  136. <klem> I'm betting it doesn't actually have a side gate in the keyway, I haven't seen anything about medeco using side gates, so its just a matter of cutting down the blank to match the original. The trick is I'm pretty certain Medeco has more than 1 keyway. I guess I could check google on that
  137. <klem> he has one, he wants to duplicate his dorm room key
  138. * VelCrow has quit (irc1.secfo.org)
  139. <computerchris> yeah I mean I don't need to cause like I can just get an RA or w/e if I lock myself out
  140. <computerchris> but I'd like to be able to just run out to the car and grab the spair
  141. <computerchris> I could even try this http://boingboing.net/2008/08/08/working-medeco-highs.html
  142. <computerchris> only needs to work once or twice
  143. <klem> first figure out what kind of Medeco it is; http://www.medeco.com/Other/Medeco/Downloads/1/Medeco.2015.NP.pdf
  144. <compuboks> Agreed, and to be clear, I support nothing illegal.
  145. <compuboks> Only legal testing of locking systems by private persons.
  146. <compuboks> For their own uses
  147. <klem> I pay taxes to by proxy of the government I support murder, extortion, invasions of privacy, wiretapping, police brutality, intimidation, organized crime, drug use, elder abuse....well the list goes on and on doesn't it?
  148. <compuboks> I have paid the same taxes
  149. <Metalwolf> lol
  150. <compuboks> But don't agree with every point
  151. <Metalwolf> try not paying your protection money... erm... i mean... taxes
  152. <Metalwolf> XD
  153. <klem> well as an expert on how to keep people out of your stuff physically a significant part of my pay comes from the government so its a regular revolving door of cash.
  154. <computerchris> I think it's a KM
  155. <computerchris> does not exactly match anything on that chart
  156. <computerchris> page 7
  157. <computerchris> 7
  158. <klem> well then you'd want to see if you can get a KM keyblank on ebay
  159. <computerchris> it looks like the KM silver other than the fact that what is shown appears on the opposite side of the key
  160. <computerchris> based on what is shown of the sholder
