Fox of the Mists

Have you ever heard of the Fox within the Mists?

They say if you encounter them, they will challenge you to a contest of wits. If you win, you can move freely to where you need to go. Fail however...and you will find your place in the world replaced. The fox will steal your face, your name and your place in the waking realms; no longer bound to the space between.

Clever the fox is, they will twist their words and bend the rules, to make you slip up so they can escape. Be wise then when travelling alone, into the misty night, to keep watch of the road below your feet. The road will not change, no matter what the wind whispers or the shapes that dance in the fog.

If you hear a voice of a lost child, do not speak.
If you hear the call of a beautiful bird, do not seek.
If you hear the voice of your mother, run.

Run far and run fast, for the Fox knows you. They know you and those that were once close. The Fox within the Mists no longer holds love for what once was and will take you in its place.

Never take your eyes off the road. For if you see it, if you meet their eyes, then the challenge will be binded. But if you find yourself bound, then be quick. Answer without details, play without emotion. Show nothing and you may escape intact.

Lose, and you will find yourself lost. The Fox will drag you deeper into the mists, their tail wrapping around you like a shroud until in the end. You are changed.

They have escaped, here you remain. Fur and all.
