- without adverbs:
- It’s going to rain. = I’m quite sure this will happen based on present evidence, such as dark clouds.
- It will rain soon. = I’m fairly sure, for example because I see the forecast on my phone.
- It may/might/could rain soon. = There’s a possibility of rain, but I’m really not sure.
- It may/might not rain. = There’s a possibility that it won’t rain (and previously we expected rain).
- It won’t rain. / It’s not going to rain. = I am very confident that there will be no rain.
- adverb meaning:
- definitely/certainly = 100%
- probably = more than 50%
- possibly = not 0%
- possibly not = not 100%
- probably not = less than 50%
- definitely/certainly not = 0%
- adverb position:
- It will certainly/definitely/probably/possibly rain. (after “will”, before the main verb)
- It is certainly/definitely/probably/possibly going to rain. (after “be”, before “going”)
