Launch the desired application.
Press and hold the Home button (the black hardware button with a white square, located at the bottom of the device).
An alert will appear, saying that backgrounding has been enabled.
Release the Home button.
After releasing the button, the alert will disappear and the application will minimize.
The application should now be running in the background.
