  3. This is just a blog for me to sort my thoughts out and try to get the most of our my gaming time. Read, laugh, cry, base a Hollywood feature film off my epic achievements, whatever.

  7. Theres a 90% chance some guy will dig this post up and use it in ad hominem in a debate against me, lol. But this blog is for being honest about my flaws so I can fix them.

  10. I've been thinking there are three main factors in survival:

  12. 1. Knowledge: having enough skill and experience to understand the dodge patterns, which bullets do what, and so on. You can learn about this by watching videos and reading the wiki, but the main way you learn whats dangerous is by dying to it.

  14. 2. Prevention: reducing the number of times you get into a situation where you may have to nexus.
  15. Maxing your def, wearing good protective gear and having a good healing pet so your HP doesn't drop so often.
  16. Making an active effort to dodge bullets, or at least the ones which are dangerous. Don't 50% dodge Nut's paralyse and 50% try hit to Nut, focus 98% on dodging Nut's paralyse.
  17. Keeping an eye on your HP and standing back to regen when its too low.
  18.  
  19. 3. Patience and cowardliness: live the life of a coward. Don't push it to the limit and nexus at the last moment, because it will usually be too late. Don't rush that dungeon and risk ten hours of work to save 1 minute. Don't put yourself in dangerous situations to compete for soulbound. Don't EP Dr Terrible and hope that your EP explodes the green potion before it kills you to compete with melees for SB.

  21. I'm sick to death of losing my 6/8's equipped with precious UTs and having to remax. I wish to enjoy the game and not spend all the time maxing over and over again. I'm thinking of creating a set of 5 6/8 characters, and making it a goal for myself to keep them all alive for one month, and max them to 8/8 if possible. If one dies, I will not replace it. I will call these guys 'The A-team'.

  55. If I was ashamed of people seeing my deaths, I would've hidden my graveyard and posted this blog on a wordpress account or something.

  66. Patience is a big one and I think part of it is the overwhelming belief that you need to make every shot count or you'll miss out on SB damage due to the melees. That's not actually true except in a few places like OT, etc. Your point about focusing on dodging 98% of the time is especially true in tombs, where usually the bosses live long enough that you'll have multiple chances to attack - but not if you get caught in a sticky (or quicksand lol) situation and nexus out, thereby canceling out those 10 previous minutes of effort.

  68. Along with learning attack patterns, I think players should research bugs too. I wasn't playing much when the epic dungeons came out, so I missed all the chatter about the mini larva spawning on top of you and instantly killing with a bunch of stacked shots. If I'd done my research, I'd have known about them.

Kabam's not likely to fix the bugs and all the whining in the world AFTER you die won't bring your character back, so pretty much it's up to the player to find out about potential bugs and decide if the risk is worth the reward. If I'd known that mini larva could randomly spawn on me even when I'm five tiles back and moving around, I wouldn't have gone into the labyrinth...especially now that I've looked up the loot table.

  74. Anyway, I'd say about 30-40% of the forum posts are generally along the lines of 'blah blah blah bug killed me bring my character back it's so unfair.' Ok, it's unfair, but once you accept that, you can figure out how to best avoid dying in the future.

  95. IMO, the truly useful skill in realm is not cowardliness, but good risk management.

  97. Forgive me for lapsing into business-speak, but I always think about realm in this way.

  99. Cowardliness is one form of risk management. Essentially, cowardliness is an extreme aversion to risk. For some investors (especially those with very little capital), the absolute most important outcome of every investment is the preservation of their initial investment. This means that they want as little risk as possible with any venture regardless of the payout. The slightest sign of even the possibility of their investment returning a loss is an immediate indicator that they need to pull out.

  101. That can be a very healthy attitude in realm, especially before reaching a point of basic profitability. Basically, the lesson to learn at this stage is that 99% of the time, the payout for your risk will not warrant the loss if you die. Unless either a)your character is 0/8 with garbage equipment, b)you are absolutely overflowing with 'wealth', or c) there is an important white bag UT already on your screen, the reward (in most cases a single drop!) will not warrant your risk (death). You've probably drunk more pots on your character than the one you're about to pick up.

  103. However, at some point this extreme aversion to risk will begin to work against you. If you act like everything will kill you, you will most likely fail to prioritize the risks which actually pose the greatest threats. Not only will you miss out on rewards you could have received because you thought the risk was too great, but you could be just as likely to die because of something unexpected.

  105. Content developed pre-kabam was very good at teaching you this principle. The "All who look upon my face will die!" shots are HUGE. You should think to yourself "that will kill me....I don't want to mess with that. ever" The artifact shots are much more incidental. Knowing that defense is a huge mitigator for damage, all armor piercing shots show up in a different color meant to teach the player that they could be in serious danger. When you see "armor broken" appear on your head, you could very well be an instant away from death if there are many small damage projectiles around to finish you off.

  107. Even without the visual instruction from the game, though, this is the attitude one needs to develop. The point is not "be afraid of everything." Rather, it is "know what to respect and act accordingly."

  109. The second part of "cowardliness" that is good to retain is humility. The coward is not concerned about looking good. He is concerned about self preservation. Pride is deadly. This is also a part of risk management.

  111. In fact, it ties in directly with your first point: knowledge. One of the most important things to add to the list of things to learn about in realm is this: know your own limitations. This is the part where you are forced to be honest with yourself about how far your abilities extend (or how short). If you're not good at something, being real about it is the best way to get better. If you have to act like a hero, you might die a heroes death. But if you put on the training wheels, you just might overcome your own weaknesses. Know thyself.

  192. Yeah, me and probably 99% of realmers have this attitude that they have to produce overwhelming amounts of DPS in order to nab the loot. So we end up trying to hit the guy for as much time as possible, putting ourselves in great danger.

As long as the actual soulbound damage for monsters stay unknown, I think people will continue to be paranoid about whether they've met SB damage and act accordingly by using DPS characters and doing risky behaviour. I know O2's sb threshold is very low, so after hitting him a few times I back off and let the others have a chance. But I don't know, for example, Bes's SB threshold so I do as much damage as possible and probably causing others to miss out on the chance for loot.

  196. I dunno though. Intuition and experience definitely tells me that I get loot more often when I do more damage. I dunno whether its just cognitive dissonance based on a slightly increased chance when you do so much DPS is stops others from reaching the SB threshold.

  220. This post.. is like an epiphany for me. And its so true. I thought the solution to dying is to be a coward, but always the impulse to take risks to gain loot overwhelms the instinct to survive. Whenever I nexus from a dangerous situation, I don't feel relieved that I saved 10 hours of work. I feel disappointed that I 'lost' 3 minutes of work. If you nexus early you're not experiencing the thrill and adrenaline of the game. If you keep nexusing when danger so much as farts in your direction, you'll retain your character, but you won't learn, you won't have fun, you won't get a reward.

  233. I guess fatuity talked about one aspect of why u die, which is basically risk management. Now this is important but im going to talk about another aspect of why u die.
  234. So after reading through your the reason of your deaths it seems that a decent amount of them are cause from you being too tired. This is from a lack of self control and letting the game control you. If you had enough control of yourself and had the will power to get off the game once you first felt the fatigued. Consequently your characters would be alive and you wouldn't be raging and closing the browser in anger. You have to remember that it is always worst to get off raging at a death than forcing yourself off.

  236. Now this is quite interesting because this means that you actually have to break the addiction to further this games experience, which i have never seen in another game.

  238. So to recap just like fatuity said that it is better to resist from rushing to white bag, it is equally important to get off the game to prevent deaths that could of easily not happened.

  276. Well yesterday I lost me 6/8 knight. Either I didn't go deep enough for the stun so that it didn't hit, or the stun registered with a delay.

  278. But just then I lost my 5/8 archer, and I pressed nexus way earlier then before 0 hp, like 1.5 seconds earlier. And this is seriously bull.

  280. I'm starting to think there is REAL input lag when there are lots of things on my screen. There is input lag when I stun, when I spellbomb, when I use the quiver (for all three of these especially in crowded areas), and when Ive been playing for a while, the movement keys start to feel sticky. Theres no reason why there isn't also input lag when I nexus. Which is a darn shame, because I spent $500 on this new laptop so I could play wihtout being disadvantaged by crappy hardware.

Well I figured out a way to both stay alive and avoid getting that shitty feeling when you nexus away from loot, at least for situations where your HP drops gradually/ It doesn't work for big, sudden hp drop shotguns, only dodging and preemptive nexusing can save you from that. Slam the HP pot button. Not just two or three times like you want to save HP pots, hammer it like the Fist of the North Star. And always have six HP pots on you at all times. If you don't have any then go to tutorial or do a UDL or something.

  295. I've been rebuilding, although I had to dig into my emergency life pot chests. I made a 4/8 knight and a 4/8 paladin which I intend to use for the sole purpose of guild abyss rushes (I know a safe, fast technique for duo abyss rushes and might make a video on it). Maxing vit and wis is mainly just vanity in these days of pets anyway and I chose these classes because they're cheap on attack but still very effective. Next I'll make a sorc to get attack in the godlands trains and then max an expensive wizard. Won't even bother maxing attack on this sorc, just spd, dex, def and wis, the main attraction is the sceptre and not the weapons damage.

  299. Also I've been maxing a second rare with hp/mp/electric so I can fuse it. However its an elf. So if I fuse it i won't have a mermaid gf anymore, and also doing tombs will be more annoying. I'm seriously considering maxing a third rare just so I can keep the mermaid and switch between the two pets. Needless to say this will take several months.

  318. Basically, my characters survive for even less time than they did in the past. Average lifespan nowadays is 1 or 2 days, rather than 3 during my days in the guild Remnant. Instead of dying 6/8 600 fame, I'm dying 4/8 400 fame. The question is, why? Why am I getting worse?

I recognise that I'm a very 'min-max' kind of player (this term refers to people who in RPG games try to optimise their characters to be as efficient as possible). I always try to push the limits, trying to get quicker at farming, improve my dodging skills, gain more wealth, et cetera. For example, when I go into an Abyss or Mad Lab, almost always I got in with the attitude 'Okay, last Abyss I did it in 3:30 minutes, lets beat that this time', or. 'This guy is rushing the Mad Lab, lets try to get to the boss before him'.

  322. However, I've discovered that min-maxing is by far one of the most inefficient ways to play the game. Such an attitude will lead to death more frequently. All those guys with gold/white stars, 14 8/8s, rare UTs on all characters etc are almost always extremely safe, extremely careful players. The only way it is possible to accumulate such wealth, short of gaining more skill in the game, is by NOT DYING. Dying is BY FAR the most costly thing to do in the game because when you die all the hours spent maxing that character disappear into nothing.

  324. Consider this risk-benefit analysis:

  326. E.g1: Rushing an Abyss.
  327. Option 1 (clear dungeon safely): Dungeon takes 4 minutes to complete. Risk of death is 0.5%. On average you can survive 200 abysses before dying just by chance.
  328. Option 2 (rush dangerously): You save 20 seconds off your rush time, but risk of death increases to 3%. On average you will survive 33 abysses before dying.

  330. E.g2: Cost of dying and remaxing

Option 1 (person plays it safe): The person with safe behaviour might waste a few minutes of labour here and there because he can't compete with more aggressive players and thus loses out on the loot. However he outlives more aggressive players by three to four times. If it costs 20 life to max a character, then maybe his character has earned back the 20 life investment and also produced 60 extra life during his lifespan.
  332. Option 2 (peson plays aggressively): This more aggressive person increases the risk of his character dying for a small short term gain. He dies over and over again, losing 20 life each time, and can barely pay back the loss, having to resort to undermaxed characters. Since he leaks money as soon as he produces it, he is constantly living hand to mouth instead of actually accumulating wealth.

  334. So now do you understand why aggressive play is inherently inefficient? It makes it difficult to enjoy wealth or UT items for long because you quickly lose them. You're stuck on a cycle of constantly farming abysses and sprite worlds to remax instead of enjoying awesome end-game content.

  336. So the question to ask is, why do people usually seem to choose aggressive play over safe play when being safe is better in the long term? I have a theory. Its just a theory, and obviously I have no grounding in psychology, but I theorise that it is because humans are emotional animals. Thusly, people don't just make a cost-benefit analysis in terms of labour and wealth, they also make one with regards to their emotions. Perhaps I am simply projecting here, but I believe risky play gives a bigger emotional payoff than safe play. A little picture to illustrate what I mean:

  340. When you play risky, adrenaline is pumping through your veins... You could lose your character at any moment but theres also that chance for phat lewtz.. You rush there quicker than everyone else, do the most DPS, and with just 10% HP left to spare you get the loot while everyone gets zero! You feel awesome! You dominate the game more than everyone else! Feels good right?

  342. Compare this experience to the safe player. He stands back and clears, finishing the dungeon safely but more slowly. "At least I'm safe, I guess" he thinks. At the boss he doesn't go in as deep as everyone else, and misses out on the loot. "Its for the best.. Losing 1 pot is better than dying.". In a tomb, he gets paralysed by Nut and nexuses before he gets shotgunned. He survives, and maybe feels relief, but is left with a feeling of vague disappointment.

  350. Not only that, but its the immeadiacy of reward. A reward in the short term is more compelling than the same reward in the distant future. Safe players are rewarded with wealth and fame and well developed characters, but thats far off into the future. Risky players are rewarded with that pot drop in the next minute. When it doesn't drop, you feel disappointed, its almost as if the game is trying to discourage you from playing safely. Of course, when you take risks you increase the risk of dying, but dying is something that never happens to you when you expect it.

  352. So, is getting a gold/white star, 8/8s, UTs and fame a matter of skill? There is a skill component but I don't believe I'm considerably less skilled at dodging, aiming and the like in content which aren't tombs and shatters than any pro. The reason Im not at that level is a question of attitude and self-restraint. I dislike safe play. I have a min-max attitude. blah blah blah. Thats why I'm 4/8 and orange star not 8/8 and gold star.

Keep playing toward those goals (all sincerity!). Playing the way you are isn't really stupid if it's what you genuinely enjoy - it's just that I have the impression that you are betraying yourself.

  406. Last thought: The other problem with your Risky vs Safe cost benefit analysis is that your benefits do not logically follow from risky play. You do not get the guaranteed potion thanks to overdamaging everyone. You do not manage to snag the potion drop by rushing to the Cube God first. Getting a white bag has no discernible genuine connection to playing risky. One or two white bags is just luck. It's a function of the numbers, and sometimes the numbers choose you. Getting all the white bags you need for all the classes you want, on the other hand, puts you right back in the long haul situation. Sometimes oryx smiles on certain people who get a couple lucky drops, but most of the time the people who have what they want are the people who work to get it by playing the numbers over the long haul.

  423. You're correct. Im only min-maxing in the short term. In fact to min-max in the overall picture would be to play in a conservative style. Delayed gratification, going for consistent returns rather than the big one, minimising risk to yourself, nexusing when you predict there going to an unacceptable level of danger in the next moment even though it might feel disappointing, etc. Reminds me of Mahjong where the aim is not really to win, but to survive, to not lose, to not gamble on huge hands, to make modest gains.

These contradict each other because the first neccesarily puts you in more risk. I think the second is more important to me though.

  437. Lately I've been playing more conversatively and nexusing wisely and in a timely manner. It seems to be paying off. I have a 4/8 knight whose survived for 5 days now which I self maxed from scratch and a 2/8 wizard who is growing up fast. Ofc like 2 or 3 of the days of that knight were unmaxed but whatever. I really hope I can keep these guys for a long time. The more restraint I use, the longer they will last. Its not a 0/1 thing where any single action will guarantee survival forever, theres a continuum.

  439. Now I know that for sure there is a delay between pressing button and nexusing. So its not enough to nexus right before danger, you need to nexus the moment that is before that, or earlier. Flashing red is as good as dead (because if you took just one extra bullet you'd probably be dead). Even getting down to quarter HP puts you on a blade's edge away from death. Quarter HP is like 150 or 200 HP, just taking one big bullet or a few small ones will instakill you. If I notice myself getting to half, I back off and let my pet regen me.

  441. Also, risk management. First off don't take a knife to a gun fight. Meaning don't take a knight to shatters for instance, use a class which is suitable for it, not only is it safer but you earn more loot. Only do it when you're very experienced and know you can handle it. Secondly, minimise the opportunity for getting into a dangerous situation. Just don't get there in the first place. Have a procedure, a set of standards. This is better. This uses logic. Relying on nexus skills instead is unpredictable and prone to human error.

  443. 'I won't let others dictate the pace at which I play': I keep telling myself this. If theres a guy rushing the abyss or lab quicker than me, fuck him. I'm not going to risk my life trying to keep up with him. Some guy rushed the abyss boss without clearing whites? I won't stay in deep, I know a single stun is enough to get SB for pots, so I'll just spam stun twice and back off. I won't rush past that enforcer bot surrounded by pink robos, I will clear it, I know it is likely to either kill me or make me nexus, so why risk it? Everyone else in the tomb circling in the middle island instead of hiding behind pillar? Don't even care. I can get SB by spellbombing from the edge and let everyone else finish it off. Its not so much cowardice but self restraint and being intelligent with what you do. Although, cowardice helps a lot too.

  446. - Apparently just one perfect spellbomb with mnova is enough to get a sphinx from nut.
  447. - Ive been using t10 weapons and armour instead of old tops now. fenyxofshadow's analysis on reddit convinced me not to go for old tops until ive maxed my shit. The bulk of your power comes from pots not equips.
  448. - People judge you a lot for wearing this level of equips. Its the only thing which they can immeadiately use to evaluate your 'proness'. Some guy called me noob because of it even though im probably more experienced than him. I think this is why 0/8 noobs wear tops. For the swag factor. They'd rather look strong and be weak than be strong and look weak.
  449. - Theres a delay when you nexus. Theres a delay when you take damage. Theres a delay when you stun or do any other status debuff. People need to take this thing into account, you can't rely on a timely nexus or stun, ASSUME there will be a delay.

In order to learn how to rush a tomb faster, I first had to have the resources to throw away a few rogues (and then rebuild them as needed). IMO, if I were trying to learn rogue while using rogue as my primary source of income, it would have taken MUCH longer. So when you say "I have a goal of rushing abyss/tomb faster" I wonder - will you reach that goal faster by trying now, or by building up your bank and then attempting it from a position of greater strength?

  497. People do it different ways. Some people build everything while risking everything. I've seen it be a very harrowing journey, and I've also seen people who just never die. For me, this is the path that I felt I could reasonably achieve, and it worked.

I consider the opportune moment to be one when I am playing with the odds rather than against them.   560. It seems that I have started down the path of internalising values of patience, risk management and intelligent play. Not just an understanding of these things on an intellectual level, but putting it to practice in my daily life. Here are things I've done in the past two days:

  562. - Maxed a Knight and Wizard 4/8 and well on my way to max a third. My account hasn't been in such a healthy state for months.
  563. - Kept these guys alive for several days. Prior to this my char survived a day on average.
  564. - Looted an Astral (from lab) and Elder (from epic pcave). Equipped them on my wizard. Its okay to wear old tops if I self looted it, right?
  565. - Got a mana from second shatters boss
  566. - Got sphinx from a single perfect spellbomb in public tomb, lol.
  567. - Got accepted into a semi decent guild in ASE, that hosts
  568. - Got two life and another sphinx ring in a guild tomb

  570. Appraisal of my new style of play: ABSOLUTELY AWESOME.

  572. I always thought playing it safe would be boring. Yes, it does slow down the pace of the game. But its fun in a whole different way, a way thats rewarding rather than exciting. I quietly gloat to myself when I see someone rushing a mad lab so quickly that he gets stuck in a risky spot then nexuses. And I managed to get loot from shatters, tomb and epic pcave by getting my SB in a safe manner then patiently waiting for everyone else to go in deep and finish the boss off.

  574. It feels good. But gotta stay vigilant. I can't start taking risks again now that I feel safe. Dying right now would be devastatingly discouraging to my new attitude. I want to internalise it. Pray to the lord and savior Bird Jesus I can stay on this good track. I wanna keep these guys for a long time more than a crack whore wants crack.

  576. Misc things I've learned:
  577. - In epic pcave tell everyone to clear and wait at portal. If someone rushes to the portal don't bother. Just nexus.
  578. - SB damage on tomb bosses is surprisingly not that high. Unless you're confident and on the right class just let everyone else complete difficult phases.
  579. - Don't go in middle island of tomb unless your HP is 100%. At 100% you can take maybe 4-5 big bullets before dying, but 75% means 3-4, thats a big difference. Just stand back adn regen, there is plenty of chances.
  580. - SB damage on avatar is also surprisingly low. I got an agate just by spellbombing it until my MP was empty and shooting it for a while.
  581. - I definitely believe that my computer can't handle crowded situations. E.g there is definitely a FPS drop at crystals, thessal and O1/2 which affects my ability to get SB, even though I know SB is very low! I often get 0 at O1 and 2 even though I've been shooting it the whole time. Somehow it seems just standing still and shooting helps the bullets connect, I suppose this is because moving reduces the FPS.

  583. Identifying dangerous behaviours:
  584. - FPS drops at O1 and O2. Nearly died one or twice at O2 when he came off his invulnerability. Just don't bother to use melee in WCs, its impossible on such an old computer. Use speed sprout or assassin to avoid the FPS drop caused by the player horde.
  585. - Using att ring instead of HP in godlands
  586. - Sometimes backing up into gods or someone dragging shit behind me in godlands
  587. - I did take an unneccesary risk trying to stun Geb in that guild tomb.
  588. - Keeping up with someone's mad lab rush. If hes faster then you, tagging behind him is pointless. Just pause at spawn..

  622. I got into the 3rd ranking guild in ASE, derpy slurps. Ive been meaning to join the guild for a while now. Everyone is pretty experienced and its refreshing not to get dumb shit like fights and people begging.

  624. This week has been pretty good in terms of loot. I got a cutlass, two dokus, an inc, a dbow and a holy prot. I wouldnt have gotten the cutlass if it wasn't for guildies knowing how to properly do epic pcave so props to them (you have to wait at the portal and then not hit the boss until everyones out of the portal, then stand in the safe spot).

  626. Now my vault is getting annoying because there isn't a lot of space, it being filled with so many UTs. This is pretty inconvenient because I used to use my empty character slots as effectively walking vaults, and I cant do that because they're actually being used now. I can see myself building up a large emergency bank pretty quickly. This can only be a good thing because that means I can sacrifice more characters in order to improve my tomb skills.

  628. Also priest is surprisingly fun and different to play. Its surprisingly good at rushing abysses using the prot. I even got a few comments from others like 'you sure know how to roll that priest' or 'kiri going deep on that priest'. Low DPS means it takes lots of time to kill things though. Malphas takes 4 phases to kill.

  630. After the first two days of my new play style I seemed to have stopped being hypervigilant towards safety. Either Ive forgotten or its become natural to me. (its a bit of both, but I think mostly the first). There have been fairly dangerous situations ive gotten into which couldve been avoided. E.g going deep in tombs, getting chain confused in lab rooms with yellow bots in them, and nearly dying on my priest in the abyss. I guess I have to remember again to not take stupid risks.

  644. I can say that ever since I have joined Derpy Slurps (3rd ranking guild in ASE) about three weeks ago, my skills and knowledge has improved A LOT. Not only do I know most of the intricacies of completing the epic dungeons, but I also have ranked up in terms of tomb knowledge. I can say that playing with experienced and coordinated guildies will make you improve a lot because they will call out WCs, public OTs and Tombs, fresh realms etc, so you encounter them much more often.

  646. For the tombs, I actually learned more about them by doing a bunch of tomb trios. I didn't know that this was the way 'pros' usually did tombs (i.e by chipping in a life each and paying a buyer on Realmeye), and I thought someone in their guild just hosts it and lets everyone in (which was my past experience). I wouldn't have known this if I didn't get a tipoff on the rotmg reddit. Well anyway, now I know. My friend PKKingH has been pretty helpful, I always try to get him in my tombs, he can carry the team during rages and gives tips as well so props to him. I do them all on Knight but as soon as one of my guys dies (hopefully not soon) I will make a Rogue so I can learn to solo the rages and carry the trio myself.

  648. My characters survive for so long that I actually have so many pots I don't have enough space for them. At this point in time I can afford to swag up my characters by maxing above 4/8 and using tops/old tops. Not dying a lot also helps to allow you to place with good UTs for longer.

  656. 1. Prot/puri Priest, died while rushing abyss. Of course, dying on a class I don't have much experience with is to be expected. Rushing abyss on priest is very risky because those few seconds of armoured is the only thing stopping you from instadeath.

  658. 2. Dbow archer, died in deadwater docks trying to get in the portal. Don't rely on going inside a portal to escape enemies guys, clear it first, because you'll take damage while it loads.

  660. 3. ASS, csword and cutlass warrior: while fighting a sphinx, it came off stun and I took a stacked fireball shotgun. I wasn't dead, but I was flashing, and then I backed out into a leviathan. He had pretty high fame so I was pretty annoyed. I can replace maxed characters pretty easily nowadays, but I can't replace high fame.

  674. Here are some miscellaneous things I've learned not included in the above:

  676. Crawling Depths:
  677. - Not worth the time it takes unless you rush to portal.
  678. - Never rush on anything except knight or warrior. In addition you will probably have to spam HP pots a lot. And you must fucking DODGE.
  679. - Most people do not think rushing is possible so you have to take it upon yourself. (I got abused once because I told a melee to rush, he said I was leading him to his death). Unfortunately melee are not as good as range in the boss fight.
  680. - You don't have to crack every damn green egg while you're clearing.
  681. - Long range piercers are best for clearing green eggs. Dbow is best, followed by cwand. Crack the eggs one at a time because its easier to pierce through all the spiders when they're in a clump.
  682. - In large groups someone will ALWAYS activate the boss.
  683. - The chance of more than one mana dropping is miniscule. Unless you are looking for old tops it is not worth doing in large groups.
  684. - When all eggs are cracked, the boss moves away and towards you in a predictable cycle. You can use this to your advantage. With sword class you hit/stun it while moving backwards when its chasing you, this gives you extra 'range'. In addition you can push it away from the web generating white orbs that get in the way.

  686. Woodland Labrynth:
  687. - Thought its reasonably safe if you know the technique, its totally not worth the time doing.
  688. - Rushing saves lots of time, but is dangerous on non-melee. Clearing can give you speed weed, however clearing on short range is pretty hard.
  689. - In first phase, lure the yellow vomit towards the middle of the room. Also kill it ASAP so it doesn't spit out tons of vomit.
  690. - The moth in second phase has a highly damaging shotgun that is hard to dodge because it tends to shoot to the side of you instead of where you are.
  691. - Make sure to clear as many small brown confusing moths before third phase as possible.
  692. - If you get confused and you walk into a shotgun or the big moth, just nexus.
  693. - At third phase, just keep circling the big moth along the border of the room while walking backwards. Its scary but after a few tries you get used to it.

  695. Tomb:
  696. - Doing Bes rage on Knight: Depends a lot on you being able to stun him before he stuns you. Try to walk around or sidestep his stun shotgun and then chainstun him.
  697. - Doing Nut rage on Knight: The method for this is quite scary. You need to let her chase you, and then when shes in range, chain stun her until she dies. You WILL get paralysed and the only thing to save your ass is to kill her, so you must not hesitate to go in deep.
  698. - Doing Geb rage on Knight: I didn't manage to do this, but from the Youtube video tutorials I see, it takes like >10 minutes and is not worth the time and risk. I took so long trying to solo Geb rage after my guildy died that I simply disconnected, lol.

  715. One thing people have been asking me about a lot is that whether I'm waiting for an expo to wear on my sorcerer. Right now hes wearing an exa hp. Well I actually have an expo to spare but I'd rather use the exa hp because hes mainly a fame train guy, and pretty much the only lethal thing in there are stacked medusa bombs. Trust me, I know, I fucking lost two 6/8 sorcerers to them twice. My sorcerer is the fame whore in my team, doing nothing but fame trains so I obtain fame and stay within guild requirements. Before you complain, going in fame train is what sorcerer was designed to do.

  717. Ive been dying, a lot. Been losing lots of characters in tombs. The price of game experience, especially tomb experience, is deaths. I lost a 4/8 + 6/8 knight and a 4/8 rogue:

  719. 6/8 knight: A rogue was doing Geb rage so in order to help him I decided to babysit several artifacts so they wouldn't respawn near Geb. They each shoot out three black bullets that do quite a lot of damage, 120+ or so. I knew I was taking damage and knew my HP was getting low, but I considered this a low risk situation. My health got too low and I must've sat on one or took a few bullets at the same time because before i knew it I was dead. This was pretty bullshit.

  721. 4/8 Knight: I was in quicksand and being slowed by artifacts during Nut in pre-rage. I got stuck in quicksand and it whittled my health away and I didn't nexus early enough (there it goes again, that HP pot/nexus delay)

  723. 4/8 Rogue: Rushing to the sarc, I got confused which fucked me and I continued to flail around like an idiot eating damage and blind bullets and then those kamikaze red swarms killed me.

  725. Other deaths:

  727. 6/8 Wizard: Another fucking typing death. Someone with a difficult to type name announced a lab. I checked that there was just an Ent far away and an undead dwarf axebearer humping me so it seemed pretty safe. Nope. HP whittled down while I was heads down typing then bam, killed by undead swarf axebearer. This pissed me off so much because I really liked that wizard. At least I 1k based him and managed to finally 5 star the class.

  729. 4/8 Wizard: In Shatters first boss nobody dragged blobombs so they exploded on top of the group. I left the group to try dodging in the open area. With blombombs exploding all around me I was finished off by a big white bullet.

  731. 4/8 Assassin: Deliberately killed him because I never played him and wanted to make way for a Rogue.

  733. This spate of deaths drained most of the wealth I stored away from my long 'no deaths' phase. Although some of the tomb deaths were pretty dumb and completely avoidable, I'm somewhat okay with them because it led to learning. However the two wizard deaths were bullshit.

  735. Again, in order to obtain wealth you need to learn to survive, not to gain wealth faster. In order for tombs to be a realistic source of income, and not just some fun 'pro' thing to do, you need to learn to be able to survive in them. Being able to rush safely, and doing the tomb in a reasonably timely manner, is also important, but by far most important is surviving- being able to see the tomb to its end without nexusing or getting into a dangerous situation, ever. If you're getting into a lethal situation you're doing it wrong, skill is nott geting into it in the first place. Its okay if the tomb takes 5 minutes longer. Be calm while rushing. Actually dodge shit instead of trying to run through rooms as quickly as possible. Stay back during pre-rage and rage. Etc.

  737. I will remax a Rogue and try to recoup the losses entirely through tombs. The average cost to max is as follows: (the pot, pot value in def, pot value in life)

  739. Att: 20 = 20/30 def = 3/4 life
  740. Def: 25 = 4 life
  741. Dex: 30 = 10 def = 1.6 life (3.3 life if buying 1:8 for quick buy)
  742. Spd: 30 = 15 def = 2.5 life (3.3 life if buying 1:8 for quick buy)

  744. So it costs about 75 def or 11 life to remax a Rogue. I think I get about 1 life profit per tomb, so thats quite a lot of tombs I have to survive. But I'll take this as a challenge to improve my skills. I'm somewhat getting bored of realm having mastered most of the content. The only thing left to master is tomb and shatters, and I'm not very interested in shatters, so when I stop playing I want to be able to say that I was able to duke it out with all the pros. The type of guy with gold star, 8/8s and has been playing for years.

  761. You made a comment about having a "Dream Team" and I think there is a lot that you can do to make that idea work for you. With 5 character slots you could build characters for certain situations and thus minimize your risk of death. For example:

  763. Knight: Abyss farmer. Your Knight should under no circumstances enter a WC or solo Geb rage.

  765. Warrior: OT damage dealer/backup Abyss farmer.

  767. Assassin: WC loot getter and messy Tomb poison spammer. Abyss with Sin? Just 1, because tunnel rat.

  769. Rogue: Tomb rusher and rage finisher.

  771. Wizard: All around dungeon runner. Pits/Cemes for speed, UDLs/Labs for wis, Manors for Att... you get the Wizards role I'm sure.

  773. That's just an example but once you have your bases covered you'll protect yourself from silly deaths. I even went as far as to make an alt character for laggy Tombs. You could take the "Dream Team" idea in another direction and pick the 5 classes that you survive the longest with or give you the best return for your investment. My big money classes are Wizard, Warrior, Sorc, Pally and Assassin. Loss of wealth classes being Trickster, Ninja and Rogue. Anyways, just some ideas for you.

A thing that I've observed is that having several character slots do indeed considerably improve your ability to survive and make a livelihood in realm, in ways which people don't seem to notice. Firstly, that you can pot up a character using another, without having to resort to mules. People with one slot often make the mistake of continuing to top and max their single character instead of leaving some wealth to instantly remax when they die, and I believe its because they don't have the foresight to be bothered muling. So they end up having to painfully self max after dying. Secondly, as you mentioned, you have a versatile set of classes and thus won't get killed by taking a knight to a WC when you can take a sorc instead. Third, an unused slot can act as a walking vault. To anyone who has realm gold to spend, I suggest you spend it on character slotsfirst and foremost!

I got a cbow in some guild trenches (thanks Ducksase and Mechiomax for hosting) and considered making another cbow/dbow archer, but I think I'll wait until I can keep my characters alive for weeks and months. Right now they last about a week each. I'd be pretty annoyed if I lost my cbow/dbow archer in one week. Recently two of my friends lost very valuable event whites (Jaems lost a cdirk and Riotonzuk lost a Jugg) so I'd rather not repeat their mistake. Think of it this way. If I can't keep my UT'd character alive long enough to obtain another of one those UTs in its lifespan, then I won't play it.

  814. Also on the use of Rogues: Theres a lot more thought involved in using him than I initially thought. Its a very intellectual class:
  815. - Have to keep track of the time of your cloaks and decloaks
  816. - Have to decloak in the right place. E.g in an abyss you have to have enough space to arc around your enemies for one second before you can cloak again.
  817. - Have to have spatial awareness in case someone runs behind you
  818. - When using planewalker, you have to think before you teleport lest you TP right into the enemy or a damaging/paralysing/whatever bullet.

  820. Its a very precise class and it has a tendancy to get trapped in extremely dangerous situations if you mess up (thus the really short life span).

  822. Addendum: I would really like to buy more OTs off Realmeye but its so hard to do it in a way that you can still make a profit. Maybe they cost about 2 life? So if you bring 6 guildies they have to pay 2 def each, and not all of them will get mana. Even if they do get mana, they just get 1 def profit. Totally not worth it.

  856. Being able to go deep and still keep your characters alive for a long time is true skill.

  982. The past two days have been pandemonium. I've been promoted to third in command of my guild and Ride the Lightning (the first ranked guild in my server) disbanded, leaving a ton of refugees trying to join my guild Derpy Slurps. In addition, out of the chaos a new guild (Chronology) arose, contending for third place in ASE. Which leads to a situation where I'm both being bombarded by PMs from people asking me to invite them to Derpy Slurps and requests for me to join Chronology. Chronology is run by Time aka Vestigial and I've been in many of his guilds before. He rarely communicates with his guild and has suddenly disbanded the guild he made three times already, so given this track record I'm not very enthusiastic about joining even though they have more fame per member. They've been recruiting extremely aggressively, trying to take members from my guild, but surprisingly nobody except one has actually moved.

  984. A lot of our guild members have <1k base fame (i.e far below requirements). It makes us look bad and I'd like to kick some to make way for those wanting to get in, but many of these guildies are my friends and have been in the guild for so long they've essentially earned 'tenure'. They've been loyal for so long and form an essential part of the social group, so it would be a total dick move to kick them. At the same time its not very fair for everyone trying to get in. This situation teaches me that I would much rather recruit people who can reliably stay above guild requirements than someone who reaches the requirements at his peak then drops below it the moment he gets in. Sadly a person's ability to maintain base fame seems to rely more on how many slots they have rather than skill. Fame is insanely important in the guild world. I think theres way too much emphasis on it. Its a shitty system but what can you do?

  986. Also remember how I said 'I take a more safe attitude to realm nowadays'? I'm not so sure thats the reason why I died less. Indeed if you look at my more recent deaths, a lot of my characters died extremely early due to recklessness. I instantly maxed these characters, take them out to play for an hour and then POP, they die just like that, at 230 base fame or less. Also remember in my previous post I said 'I'm not so sure that I've truly ingrained the safe attitude in myself'.

  988. Rather I think the reason why I died less is quite simple. I've just gotten more skilled. Ever since I started this blog my skill has increased dramatically. I joined Derpy Slurps, mastered the epic dungeons, and now I've mastered tombs. I can attribute a lot of this to the fact that I'm in this guild and also that I can instantly remax after death and jump right back into the endgame. Oh right I forgot to mention I finally reached my goal of doing 11 tombs on a Rogue. It only took six maxed Rogue deaths, heh.

Honestly I'm not too enthusiastic about that. That'll open up a whole new world of painful deaths and time-consuming remaxing, and I just don't like the Shatters. Maybe I'll just quit this silly game.

  1138. The only skin I got was the bashing bride and I bought that for 8 life. Im not really that hot on buying cosmetics as they dont change my gameplay in any way. only if i really really liked the look of it would i consider buying it. e.g it looks like there might be a new miko skin for the huntress and i like that so ill definitely buy it when it comes out

  1165. 1. Thoughts on guilds: I think the biggest factor in making a guild strong is having an excellent leadership. Almost everything banks on the founder being good. If you have the three below attributes you will probably make it to 1st in your server:
  1166. - Prestige: You've got to look pro. Lots of char slots, tons of fame (10k, 20k, maybe even more), tons of maxed characters decked out with tops and UTs.
  1167. - Competence: You make smart decisions and write good rules. For example, best way to start strong is to steal a big chunk from pre-existing guilds and use the bandwagon effect to get even more guys. If you start out weak people get demoralised and leave, but if your guild grows really suddenly people want to get in early on the bandwagon.
  1168. - People skills: You should be well liked and a good judge of character. Encourage people to become friends so the guilds held together by friendship as well as prestige. If theres fighting, defuse it quickly. Don't invite dipshits.

  1170. This paragraph is a bit boring so skip it if you want. Recently in my guild (Derpy Slurps) there was a change in leadership. Arseburger, the original founder, stepped down and there was a vote between two dudes, Falconia and Rjelectro to become new founder. I would judge the attributes of each of these guys as 10/10/10, 7/10/10 and 4/3/7 respectively. It was a close vote but in the end I'm glad Falconia got the job as he's the only capable person in the guild. The only reason Rjelectro was even considered was because he bribed everyone with tombs. I'm really sick of this guy as he constantly starts fights and acts like an immature brat. Now hes started his own guild after Falconia (rightfully) kicked him, and hes stealing members from ours. I have no idea why our members are going to join him, anyone with eyes in their heads can see him as objectively incompetent.

  1173. 2. My 8/8 warrior died (2.1k base, 5k dead fame). I was helping my guildie max by rushing abysses for him. He would go on pally and boost me every ten seconds, and I would just run past everything. Unfortunately he didn't boost me while I was on a lava bridge, so instead of insta-killing the minions they were getting all clumped up in a huge bunch. It was my fault really. Strangely, I don't really care.

  1175. 3. My shatters knowledge has probably tripled in the past few weeks. I used to shit my pants in the shatters but nowadays, if I have a competent team, we can finish off the final boss easily. Two things were instrumental in this:
  1176. - For two days straight there was some kind of dungeon-athon in AsiaEast nexus. The Japanese were opening shatters, tombs, clands and lairs over and over again. Needless to say I got plenty of experience there.
  1177. - Lurking Drybowser's mumble a shitload. Sometimes they tell me about shatters, and LukeyXD gives me lots of tips on that shit. So props to those two. Sadly I can't speak much, because I only have an inbuilt laptop microphone which is really horrible. Makes me seem like a creep since I never talk, but whatever.

  1179. I'm starting to realise that who you know is just as important in mastering the game as working hard and doing research. If you know powerful players, you can tag along in dungeons and learn off them, so their skill rubs off on you. This is sort of like in real life actually.

  1181. 4. Using classes that I don't usually use:
  1182. - Ninja: its just plain shit, theres no way this class is practical. Low defense sucks, high speed is a disadvantage while dodging, only saving grace is big damage. Its a bit like the comparison between Japanese and American fighter planes in WW2. The fast, lightly armoured Zeroes lost out against the slow and heavy American planes.
  1183. - Huntress: the traps are very useful in shatters and avatar. Use them to slow blobombs and minions, and paralyse avatar's eye phase to finish it off quickly. Dbow is awesome for clearing minions and obelisks/titanums, because you can shoot through the minion right into the towers.
  1184. - Mystic: Surprisingly interesting and a breath of fresh air. Quite good in labs, tombs, and oryxes and hella useful in shatters and lair of draconis, but a bit lacklsutre elsewhere.

  1186. 5. Stuff about shatters I learned:
  1187. - Probably the biggest thing that fucks up shatters is bad dragging. Minions need be killed quickly otherwise they start spawning tons of portals, bombs etc. Thats why you need to aggro the minions one or two at a time, or else the group gets overwhelmed and all hell breaks loose. Tip for noobs: A bad drag will mess up a shatters. If you don't know what you're doing, stay back and let someone experienced drag.
  1188. - Stasis to save people from bad drags.
  1189. - At second boss, the blue bird can't get stasised, so don't try to aim and just stasis the red bird ASAP.
  1190. - Slow second boss with traps when he's moving from button to button.
  1191. - Don't ever paralyse or slow third boss, it will mess it up.
  1192. - Stasis the artifacts as soon as they spawn so the guys can focus on destroying the fire and ice portals first. After that, try to stasis red, blue and green so the others can destroy the yellow artifact.
  1193. - Don't hit third boss after artifacts die, it will buff him.
  1194. - Stand back when third boss says 'you test the patience of a god' and stop attacking. Only attack him after he says 'ha ha'. This way you can avoid fighting the final phase.
  1195. - Honestly, shatters are not that profitable. You're mainly doing it for the small chance at life/mana, tops, UB rings or UT rings. The whole thing will take 30 minutes or more, but I usually only come off with 1 life worth of loot.

  1197. 6. Stuff about Lair of Draconis I learned:
  1198. - Rock dragon gets annihlated so quicky now that LoD drops from it. Its crazy how people become eager to tackle dangerous stuff if you reward them enough.
  1199. - Don't wait outside the portal for your mates too long otherwise you will get walled out from the first boss.
  1200. - Always call black dragon first, or else you won't be able to fight the fifth dragon.
  1201. - LoD is actually not that dangerous.
  1202. - Melee is bad in LoD. Most of the time you can't even get close enough to hit. I like this because it sort of rebalances the game towards ranged.
  1203. - I'm not sure what the mini-dragons do, but it seems like stasis is awesome for getting rid of the mini-dragons. For one of the bosses you have to kill the minidragons before the boss can be attacked, so for that you don't stasis it of course, but it seems like the other ones are fair game.
  1204. - LoD only drops rainbow pots, cem-level gear, cloths, the UT armours and UT ninja equips. It not difficult, but takes a long time to defeat, and to me the rewards aren't really worth it in my opinion (you usually get 0).

  1234. Another thing I learned: Even if you stasis correctly in a shatters, theres always someone who will call you a noob. In a particular shatters I was doing, I stasised bad drags (when theres >4 minions being dragged I stasis half the group), and also I stasised the artifacts at the Forgotten King (doing so allows the group to deal with the fire and ice portals, and then to deal with the artifacts one by one particularly the yellow one), and some gold star dude called 'Bbni' abused me. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but If I am please explain to me.

  1247. Ninja is a great generalist. Second highest DPS in the game without the star and can use the star for single targets like a dbow (instant soulbound). If you use the piercing to hit multiple targets and utilize the star with mp heal he can be one of the most damaging classes in the game, but has dagger like range instead of having to stand on top of everything. Using a ninja feels like having a warrior with a dbow. .. . . .. . and did I mention he has a speedy boost? With mp heal his speedy boost can last nearly as long as you could ever possibly want.

  1249. He far exceeds the melees in ability to dodge debuffs due to range + speed, and he outdamages everything. Before doku and before pets, he was a little too squishy for me and the star was impractical, but that's not the world we live in any more. Ninja is a really good class in this environment, IMO.

  1258. Theres a few things to talk about. First off I left Derpy Slurps and went into the #1 guild in ASE called 'Serious Business'. Despite having a lot of skilled players in it, it was incredbly quiet and the founder just up and left. This sort of thing makes me realise the quality of guilds in ASE is extremely low. For example the #2 guild at the moment is called 'Blazing Stars'. The founder was an ex-derpy slurp member who got kicked after going on a tirade about not being promoted for three hours straight. I am actually the guy who taught him how to tomb. I remember I was trying to teach him to Geb rage on assassin. This simple to do, just lob poisons at him form the edge of your screen, but for some reason he complained about not being able to get close enough to do that. Eventually I found out he can't play on off-center: he literally went to yellow star without knowing how to tomb and without using off-center. This guy is the boss of a #2 guild. This sort of gives you an idea of what the state of ASE is like.

  1260. So anyway, I decided to broaden my horizons and search America and Europe for good guilds and I actually made it into Dirkheads. I was immeadiately struck by how awesome it is. The guild is chock full of extremely competent and active players, quite a few of which are famous names on Youtube and the forums. Many of them were already pros when I was still but a 0/8 wizard noob. Once again I've been put in the position of a small fish in a big pond and I'm really optimistic that I will advance a shitload in terms of mastering the game.

My knowledge has jumped by miles and miles simply by watching what the pros do, to the point where I feel qualified to give guidance to less experienced players on shatters now. I'm usually able to catch the beginning and tail end of the active times, but really its just an unfortunate quirk of timezones that I miss most of this.   1285. I'm actually considering creating my own offshoot of the irc designed specifically for people in Asia and Australia. Having to manage it would be annoying, and I would have to familiarise myself with the running of IRCs, but it would be well worth it. I actualy disagree with certain aspects in the wat current IRC is run, so there would be a few changes. The application form would have more emphasis on skill than prestige of the player: not only would typical credentials like fame, maxed chars etc be examined, but there would also be a quiz that tests your knowledge, and a section where you can upload video evidence of your skill. I'd get someone to translate the application form into Japanese and possibly even Chinese or Korean (they seem to be the largest group of players in this timezone besides Australians respectively). The goal is to unify the players in ASE and AE to create an elite force of shatters runners.

  1287. Because the fact of the matter is, there is definitely a sort of 'brain drain' happening in ASE server. All of the truly skilled players in ASE have left to join American and European guilds and have stopped playing in ASE. The great guilds of the past are gone: FSU is gone, RTL is gone. The #1 guild is run by a fame farming scrub, WCs rarely get opened, tombs get wasted because no one knows how to rush, every shatters run will ALWAYS be ruined by noobs dragging things and activating towers, etc.. Its a sorry state and I might be able to put the skill back into this server if I can bring everyone together in an IRC.

Its the mark of proness. To me, being a yellow star and above means you are a 'pro' (ignoring fame farmers and the like of course) and thus if I ascend to yellow star it means I have mastered the game to such an extent that I can duke it out with the pros.

Its important the IRC starts off with a bang on its first day. To do that I need to PM all the good players and guilds in AE and ASE and ask them to submit an application, and then after a few weeks have a grand opening so people get a good first impression. Usually death because of refusing to nexus or because of not paying close attention to the game and not respecting danger as much as I should be doing. Instead of panicing like I used to, I'm doing the complete opposite: being far too calm, because this content doesn't scare me anymore. To me, becoming a pro partly involves staying focused, remembering to dodge and remembering to nexus if there is danger. If you're at half HP, and you see you're in a situation where its pretty hard to get out of, just nexus out of there! At 1/4 HP youre just one or two bullets away from death and wasting many hours of maxing.

  1331. Class composition: unlike common belief, you don't need a large group of ranged characters to complete a shatters. What you DO need is a group with a good class composition where everyone knows what their task is. In fact large groups are often WORSE than small groups because people who don't know how to do a shatters drag enemies and activate towers.
  1332. - Paladin and Warrior: are virtually essential for shatters runs. They need to permabuff the group so the group can steamroll through enemies, stopping them from spawning more. Paladin is especially needed to smash through the high defense of certain enemies. If theres no paladin, go switch and get one. You NEED a paladin.

  1334. - Knight: they can tank damage and stun red mages/certain other minions. Having an ogmur is REALLY helpful.

  1336. Melees need to tank bullets so the ranged DPS doesn't have to suffer damage and status effects. They also do their fair share of damage on towers and certain types of mages.

  1338. - Archer and Huntress: comprise part of the 'ranged DPS' team. Dbows can smash through the high armour minions that spawn from towers and hit the tower itself. Their abilities can affect the movement of enemies which is very important. Archers can paralyse blue mages and ice spheres, and ice spheres are especially dangerous because they can jump on people and instakill them. Huntresses can lay slowing traps all over the floor reducing the distance the group gets pushed back by mages. Also huntresses can instakill the eyeball phase of avatar (by placing paralyse traps near the top right of the avatar before they spawn), and have THREE methods of making the forgotten king fight extremely easy (more on this later)

  1340. - Trickster: I've never taken one to a shatters, so I'm not entirely clear on all the details of their use. They can lure blobombs away from the group (however the decoy will not detonate them), and clear the secret switch to the second boss.

  1342. - Mystic: Not essential, but very nice to have in your team, and are part of the 'ranged dps' of the group. They can stasis bad drags to save people, make rushing switches possible by stasising the minions around them, stasis minions sitting on a tower so the tower can be hit, stasis the blue bird at second boss, and stasis the artifacts at the forgotten king.

  1348. - Fire mage: bullets do medium damage and can be tanked by melee to some extent, it only inflicts quiet and unstable
  1349. - Ice mage: shoots a boomerang ring of bullets. Can be killed on melee by circling them. Summons the ice sphere. Fear the ice sphere. It will instakill you.
  1350. - Fire adept: again, the bullets can be tanked to some extent.
  1351. - Ice adept: extremely dangerous, the confuse can instakill you if you confuse into its shotgun, and it can send you spiraling into the lava or other enemies. On melee wait until its shot its wave of confuse bullets, and shoot it while dragging it backwards to increase your range. For ranged characters, weave in between the confuse.
  1352. - Fire archmage: its attack pattern doesn't change. a ranged character needs to weave in between teh bullets and hit it from afar.
  1353. - Ice archmage: these guys will run away from you if you get too close to them. Therefore the only way to kill it on melee is to shove it into a corner. Its aimed bullet doesn't do any damage but inflicts unstable. Therefore to kill them someone needs to stand in front of the ranged characters and tank the aimed bullet.

  1355. - Titanums (black towers): summons stone knights (the guys that explode on you and paralyse you) and stone mages (the guys with white wavy bullets). A melee needs to tank those paralyses and lure the wavy bullets away from the group. If you stand about one tile away from the mage, they will actually loop around you harmlessly, so do that in a direction away from the group.
  1356. - Obelisks (yellow towers): summons stons paladins, which shoot black bullets in a djinn-like pattern. Again, the melees should tank these bullets.

  1358. For both types of towers you need to kill them as quickly as possible, as once they have activated they'll continually summon monsters, possibly making the shatters impossible to complete. Only activate them once the whole group has gathered, and angle your shots so they hit the tower rather than the minions it spawns.

  1364. Phase 2: Artifacts phase: Portals will spawn the instant the artifacts become damagable. One guy needs to stand in the top left corner and lure the portals to spawn there. Putting a paralyse trap on the artifacts before they become active (huntress) and stasising the artifacts (mystic) helps immensely. The artifacts has very simple behaviour, they simply rotate around the nearest guy. You can get them stuck to the wall on the left and use peekaboo technique to kill them. Bring a holy water or grum if you can, it will save your ass if you get paralysed.

  1366. Phase 3: King surrounded by many stone guards phase: right before this phase starts, you want your huntress to put down a paralyse trap (NOT SLOW TRAP) where the king is standing. This will paralyse all the stone guards at the top of the room the moment they spawn, making the fight trivially easy. When all the stone guards are destroyed, the king will shoot a large shotgun while being vulnerable for a few seconds, before summoning the guards again. Depending on how much damage you do, you may be able to push him into the next phase. If you have a small group and can't do enoguh damage to push into next phase, only hit him for about 2 seconds, because he might summon the guards AND the tentacles at the same time.

  1368. Phase 4: Tentacles of wrath phase: The king shoots six fireball lasers, periodically becoming vulnerable, and little cheeto babies will come out from the lava. You can actually stop the lasers from happening, by placing a paralyse trap under the king before he hits this phase. The things that shoot the lasers respawn periodically, so you need to keep placing traps, but not when the phase is nearly over, as that might paralyse the king in the middle and screw everything up.

  1370. Phase 5: "Drown, and be swallowed by those who have failed before": The king will move to the top of the room and shoot a super dangerous shotgun. There is a safe spot on the tile right behind the king, where the bullets will loop around you harmlessly. Stand there and unleash hell on the king.

  1372. Phase 6: "YOU TEST THE PATIENCE OF A GOD! DIE! DIE!! DIE!!!": When he says the patience line, you need to immeadiately move to the bottom of the room before he starts shooting. From this distance, the bullets will not appear on your screen. When he says "Ha.. Ha.." go back to the top and unleash hell on him. If enough damage is done, he will say "Impossible!" and die, but if there isn't, he will flash and repeat this phase, so just walk back down to the bottom of the room again and repeat until he's dead.

The advantage maxing vit and wis gives me is very small compared to what my pet does (if i remember correctly 75 vit is like half of a maxed rare heal pet), so I don't actively try to max those stats unless its a long-lived character I particularly like. The vast bulk of your power comes from the first four stats so its much better to convert vit and wis potions into some other potion. Also I rarely run abyses and UDLs (especially hate abysses) so I rarely see vit potions, sometimes I manage to max wis by doing labs though

  1435. I retract my comment about Ninja sucking. In fact, Ninja does not suck- provided you have a doku. Recently I happened to obtain two dokus and the feed power (500) is too low for me to feed. Rather than just throwing it on the ground like I usually do, I decided to just throw it on a Ninja with some junk equips I had lying around and see how long I could survive with it. And surprisingly, it was pretty decent! The waviness and similar damage to T12 are good things, but the main attraction is that extra 1 tile range. That 1 tile range makes a BIG difference. Its the difference between 'squishy kamikaze class' to 'has a decent chance at survival if you can dodge and control the speedy well'.

  1599. I thought I had gotten pretty good at avoiding death, but I guess I was wrong. So I have to go back to the drawing board and learn from my mistakes.

  1605. The death of my lucky Ninja gave me my 56th star, finally turning my into a yellow star. I admit I'm disappointed with this because I wanted to get my gold star by hitting 2k base fame on the ninja.

  1607. The death of my jugg warrior was bullshit and was one of the few moments in my career where I died to genuine lag. It shouldn't even be possible for the bullets to reach me since I was behind the pillar. I rubberbanded for a split second and then boom, full health to instadeath. Its been commonly reported on the forums that lagging in LoDs causes instadeath. You should never go into a LoD when lagging. In fact, its a good idea not to go into LoDs at all unless you aim to get the white bag drops because the rewards are crap.

  1609. It feels like my skills have gotten worse, or at least plateaued, for quite a while. Several months on and I still haven't become a 'super pro' who can face dangerous endgame content but still keep his characters alive almost indefinitely. My powerful pet has made me 'forget how to dodge'. I nexus far too late (at like 100 hp), which combined with input lag, gets me killed. I don't watch my HP. And whereas in the past I feared difficult content like tombs/shatters, now I'm completely unphazed by it to the extent that I don't even register extremely dangerous situations. Dying still feels shit, but it doesn't feel as shit as it used to make me feel. I'd rather flail around an ice adept while being confused and darkness'd rather than nexus. While I'm flailing around in a hopeless situation like that, I'm not thinking about how this is an extremely dangerous and probably irrecoverable situation that could make me instantly lose a character worth 20-40 life, but rather my mind is occupied with trying to stay in the dungeon and salvage the situation. Somehow, I have to get over it. But it feels like sustaining vigilance is too much of a hassle.

  1611. I really want to get over it too, because while dying puts a huge 20-40 life gap in your pocket, not-dying for long stretches of time makes it super easy to build up a huge wealth reserve. Having lots of wealth makes it possible for me to host guild tombs/shatters/OTs pretty much continuously (any time I can find a buyer). Purchasing these keys off other players usually causes me a net loss in wealth because I usually don't even break even on donations, but I don't mind it if I have plenty of pots. Unfortunately, dying makes not have 'plenty of pots'.

  1613. After my jugg warrior death I took a short break. Ever since the break, I've experienced a mysterious lag. CPU intensive activities such as crowded oryxes and events send me ice skating and input lagging everywhere. This problem culminated in the unfair death of my huntress. This didn't use to happen (at least not as bad as it is now). I have NO idea whats causing it. Some explanations might include:
  1614. Something competing for CPU usage: Possibly a virus, or some annoying program. Many programs take up your processing power by continually searching for updates, 'phoning home' your private activities or just because of. The possiblity that I got a virus from investigating the event notifier website (I didn't download it) also can't be discounted. I did download several programs for school during that time. I don't really know how to remove crappy programs.
  1615. Something competing for RAM: again, some programs might be using up my RAM. Its possible that updating Firefox caused this problem. Firefox is known for using up a lot of RAM.
  1616. CPU cooling not working as well as it should: my new laptop isn't quite so new any more and the heatsink for the CPU is getting clogged up with dust. Also its summer over here, which might be raising the temperature. I'm not sure how to clean up the dust clogs. Theres something called 'canned air' which you can use to blast jets of air into computer components to clean them, but I'm not sure if that will just blow dust into other parts of my computer. Im pretty sure the only other alternative is dismantling it and cleaning it with e.g a cottonbud but from experience I know that when you take electronics apart you often can't put them back together again.
  1617. Some other random stuff: for example, I take my laptop to school with me, meaning it jiggles around in my bag all day. The vibrations might make components not work as well for who knows what reason.

Also; when running to the bosses, if you see the slightest bit of enemies that weren't cleared, just nexus. You never know what else might be up there.

  1908. I managed to fix my lag, so I'm back! Turns out it was the laptop fan and heatsink getting clogged with dust which was causing the lag. I amanged to get it out by buying a can of pressurised air and using it to blast the dust out.

Since you're going to be playing again, watch out for the blue tornado enemies (aka Icy Whirlwind) in the new ice cave dungeon. One of them killed my 8/8 warrior instantly because I accidentally stood on one. 10 months of survival gone in less than a second.

  1953. On an unrelated note, one interesting thing I noted is that the rangePS relationship is now a more commonly discussed concept in balance discussions. Before I wrote my essay about rangePS and balance, almost nobody talked about it at all. Its cool to see that my thoughts make a tangible effect on the community.

  1955. Thus I want to bring to peoples' attention the concept of risk:loot and time:loot ratios. Most of the dungeons released by the current Kabam team have been very poor with regards to this. Consider:
  1956.  
  1957. - The epic dungeons: only crawling depths is really worth doing, and deadwater is alright if you can manage to steamroll the boss. Woodland labryinth is just total shit and you risk being instakilled for a lousy vit pot.
  1958.  
  1959. - Shatters: Takes very long (14+ minutes even with a good group) and is extremely dangerous with many instakills. Its harder than tomb but has crappier drops than tomb. I only do them because they're interesting and for the white bags.
  1960.  
  1961. - Lair of Draconis: Takes a long time to complete with a large group and has a very low rate of tops drop and low-tier pots. I wouldn't even go in one to leech it.
  1962.  
  1963. - Puppet dungeon: Each chest has a very low rate of att pot drop. It might be worth it to solo, but soloing takes so long that it renders it pointless. I wouldn't even go in one to leech it.
  1964.  
  1965. Compare this to the msellers realm team released dungeons:
  1966. - Candyland
  1967. - Haunted Cem
  1968. - Mad Lab
  1969. - others i probbaly forgot
  1970.  
  1971. And you can see that the dungeons released by the current team has very poor rewards, rewards that are so poor that in many cases its not even worth going into the dungeon to leech it.

  1973. The recently released ice cave bucks the trend and from the few ice caves I've completed so far I would tentatively conclude that its worthwhile to do in a large group, as it drops tops and old tops at a reasonable high rate. This is great, but the dungeons I listed above need to have their rewards balanced with the rewards of content. There is an opportunity cost involved with going into a dungeon. If I go into a puppet dungeon and it takes 10 minutes to get an attack pot, that is shit compared to if I farmed godlands or sprite worlds for 10 minutes and got wealth worth several times more than an attack pot for less risk.

Kiri if your looking to start trying to do switches on 2nd boss ask hpzorz, he has expeirence, as for the lod, are u asking where to leech? or.... im really confused. if your talking about how u could do it faster, only solution is bigger group OR abraham wand.. or dbows.... if your talking about leeching, i LOVE taking lava baths with my priest at red dragon. just a sudgestion

  2097. Here is a picture of Son of Arachna no-clipping through a wall. It can happen with other enemies, as long as they have a ton of speed. The Twilight Archmage can clip through Pure Evil tiles in the Shatters for example.

  2099. I wonder if that can be used as a legit strategy. Solo clear the dungeon, activate the boss then pause in a corner until boss no-clips through a wall so you can hit it using spellbombs/poisons. The boss room needs to be pretty close to another room though.

  2160. Lel. Rushing the Northeast switch is fairly straightforward, cloak in, run run run, and go to the top of the room the switch is at. At that point, I look at the minimap and if there's one dot, that means a Mage or Pally tower guards the switch. In my opinion, this is the best you can hope for. Cloak and let it overspawn and drag the enemies to the top of the room while you're visible. Planewalk over the shitstorm of bullets, #rek the switch, and cloak as soon as you're able to after cooldowns.

  2173. The northwest switch is a tad problematic. If you intend to solo the path to the switch as well as the switch itself there are some guidelines to follow. When you get to the breakable walls, only hit the northernmost row, and repeat this while hitting the easternmost column on the segment that travels north.
  2174. This way, you avoid having to deal with the stone towers.
  2175. Still alive? Awesome! There are no ideal scenarios for the room that houses the switch. All you can really do is rely on your planewalker (don't even try using a tiered cloak), reflexes, and judgement. The best you can hope for is to be able to drag all enemies to one side so you can comfortably perma-cloak at the switch.

  2319. Ive tried soloing switches a few times. I learned that the time taken to kill the switch doesn't really matter that much. What matters is that you're patient and make sure to cloak and uncloak safely. Don't try to push the limit, make sure you prepare ahead of time by uncloaking far away from the enemy, otherwise shit is going to go down.

  2342. The important thing is to ensure you are outside aggro range when you decloak. This means you must begin the process of walking back to your safe space before the cloak has run out. It will take several trips to finish off the switch, but if you're wearing exa att and etherite it will take less trips. The trips taken is not the important factor, the important thing is to give yourself a generous timeframe with which to walk back and decloak.

What you should do is walk in uncloaked and destroy the tower as if you were a melee class.

At this point the only thing I care about doing is endgame content and content like this usually requires cooperation to farm efficiently. Without cooperation things like shatters and tombs become considerably more dangerous and take more time to complete. Near the end of my time with this guild I was hosting shatters and tombs and nobody was coming to them for god knows what reason. Despite being a top ten guild it seemed like the only thing people were interested in doing was farming abysses and sprite worlds for the 1000th time. So yeah, if anyones reading this, please tell me if you can get me invited into a good guild. I fear at this point we're going to lose all the skilled players in ASE server again because theres no strong guild to keep them here.

  2423. I've been plateauing in terms of progress in this game for quite some time now. The time between deaths hasn't actually changed much in the past year I've been playing and i've been getting diminishing returns on my skill. At this point I realise that there are two things I need to progress. One is the thing I mentioned before- to have good players to cooperate with.

  2425. The second thing is an attitude change. I've always obsessed with constantly improving my skill and figuring out how to farm things faster. But I realise now that if I want to reach my goals faster (getting the shatters UTs, getting high fame and dying rarely) trying to farm shit faster is not the correct path. The thing which I need to do is learn how to play safer. This is where the game gets tricky. It stops being about skill. It starts being about self-control and concentration. Can you keep a constant eye on your HP while dodging and aiming and nexus when the HP gets too low? Can you stay alert and watch the minimap in case one of your teammates drags a mage behind you? Can you stop yourself from rushing the bridge when there is an unacceptable level of danger involved? Can you stop yourself from running to the boss through many dangerous minions even if it means you might not get loot? Can you anticipate when a situation is impossible to survive and nexus early? Can you nexus from a shatters even though it took you 20 minutes to get to where you were? Can you resist going for a small+risky reward so you can get a bigger reward later?

  2427. All in all, its just the same old story from 1.5 years ago, but just transplanted into the context of endgame content. Stop trying to shave 10 seconds off your dungeon completion time and start getting into the attitude that you need to farm safer, not faster. I'm not sure I really want to go with this game, because this phase of my career doesn't seem very fun. Trying to go for a long term reward when the long term prospects of this game seems stupid. I don't think its likely Kabam can manage this game well in the future. If they don't have employees continuing to work on the game, it will either slowly get strangled by hacks users/notifiers, or a large exploit/hack on the scale of swatsec or duping will destroy the game. I don't want to be one of those guys who are always 'fuck kabam!' but I think that, objectively, this game has been managed extremely poorly.

  2467. Run up to the top of the room. Rotate your camera and offcenter your view as well. The overspawned stone mages will attempt to quickscope you. Let the shots get fairly close to you, then planewalk over them for a straight shot to the switch. As soon as you uncloak, cloak. The mages will not have enough time to shoot more than a few shots in your direction, which will be fairly easy to dodge. If your pet does not let you perma, then even 2 MP pots are good enough with your equipment.

Its been a while since I've been in a guild where I wasn't the best or near the most skilled player in it. They know how to cooperate. I learn a lot from the other players. I was pretty lucky to be invited. Churlish saw me rushing the 2nd switch in a shatters and seemed to be impressed with it. Everyone in the guild is real tight knit and friendly.   2502. Indeed, the game is dying. There hasn't been content pushed out or a bug fix in over a year. Motmg or the rare communication from Nullbot is a nice morale boost but it doesn't actually improve the situation of the game at all. Cheater reports are not being watched. Notifags and hackers brazenly use their hacks because they know they won't get punished. Do you know how frustrating it is to spend ages hunting down and killing avatars only to have the shatters ruined by hackers who just run through all the enemies to the first/third boss? The game WILL die if something doesn't change the trajectory of the game. Maybe at least one fulltime worker will be assigned to rotmg, or maybe it'll be sold to another company, or maybe we could crowdsource programing labour from the community. All I know is, if something doesn't change, the game will either slowly die off to accumulated bugs and loss of faith, or there will be a major crash when something like swatsec or duping comes along and theres nobody around to fix it.

Yeah I like you idea of a dying log, if I were to make 1, my archer death was recklessly rushing, my first 6/8 paladin death was not knowing how to shats and rushing to the first boss(ouch), my rogue death was being unable to cloak due to a stupid wall in abyss, warrior death was afk, second pally death was rushing abyss and going reckless, third paladin death was shotgunned by crystals, and my knight death was an ice sphere landing on top of me and exploding, and wizard death was reckless in glands.

  2604. In the past week I've finally achieved one of my major realm goals: getting all the shatters rings. This is after losing most of my 10k base fame (losing my 4k base warrior, 2k base priest and 2k wizard to sloppy play as well as just suiciding my 2k necro). After playing a long time I stopped caring (like Bikerbombe wrote earlier in this thread) and played very poorly so I took a long break and now I'm bouncing back. Seems like my survival skills goes up and down in cycles: being skilled, getting bored and inattentive, dying a lot, taking a break then bouncing back. I never seem to be able to keep my characters alive indefinitely like pros like zxcv or Gogoasagur. Anyway now I have 1 bracer, 5 gems and 1 crown. I was getting pissed off for a while because I had 5 gems and nothing else lol.

I learned to love tiered helms more than jugg, QoT is meh, cronus is replaced by etherite, ogmur just helps you do damage faster. AND TO BE HONEST bracer and crown aren't actually that good (imo). I'll probably get hated for this but I think pyra is actually the best ring in terms of compromising between protection and DPS because bracer and crown leaves me feeling too vulnerable and scared of losing a rare UT which just leads to a reduction in DPS anyway because I have to play it safer.

  2616. This is the safespot for the forgotten king right after artifacts phase and before orbiting guards phase. The king's blue and red bullets aim towards you whereas the purple armour piercing bullets always have a fixed direction. If you stand in between the first and second yellow circle then the king's bullets will not hit you as you are standing in the space created by the second loop of bullets. But you don't want to stand to the right of the pink line because then you'll get hit by the purple bullets. An easy way to remember this is to stand in the junction between the 3rd and 4th tile counting from the left ledge going right is a safe spot.

  2618. Doing this allows you to 'pre-damage' the king before guards phase. Why do you want to pre-damage? Right after guards phase there are three things which can happen which are conditional on the amount of damage you during the brief vulnerability right after killing all the guards. If you don't do enough damage, you have to repeat guards phase. If you do enough, the king pushes to tentacles phase. But if you do damage in between these two, the king shoots guards and tentacles at the same time, which is very dangerous. Pre-damaging increases the chance that you'll do enough damage to psuh to tentacles.

  2620. However if you do too much pre-damage it buffs the king. A buffed king shoots out tentacles, red and blue bullets as well as the guards, and it will stay at the top of the room rather than the center. Actually a buffed king is not as dangerous as a slowed one because you can simply walk to the bottom edge of the room which makes it safe. But at any rate, getting a buffed king is very annoying, so I suggest only one person does the pre-damaging and also that they don't hit the king much. You sorta get a feel for how much damage you should do after a few times.

  2629. This safespot is used when the king is in the middle of the room (right after guards phase and right when tentacles spawn). If you stand in between the two yellow circles you will be safe within the second loop of the bullets. A handy reference point is to stand just above the yellow tile. If someone's standing near you but not exactly on you here, it can screw it up. Also if you don't do enough damage guards can spawn again which can make things dangerous (due to the stacked bullet thing I mentioned earlier, as well as armour piercing bullets) so you want to do as much damage as possible.

  2631. The third safespot, which almost everyone knows, is when the king moves back to the top of the room and says 'Drown and be swallowed by those who have failed before". You stand on the tile right above him, in the small safespot created by the first loop of bullets. When he says 'YOU TEST THE PATIENCE OF A GOD!' you have to move back down. Under certain conditions the king won't shoot tentacles and you can stay up there, but I'm not clear on what, seems to be amount of damage. Staying up there is not neccesary, it just takes less time to kill the boss and it makes you look hardcore.

  2645. Most interestingly its cool to note that the 'shatters techniques meta' is still continuing to develop. Just a few months ago, little to no people knew about the forgotten king safespots. Those looping blue and red bullets were virtually undodgeable and you dealt with them by avoiding the shotgun altogether. So it seems like people are still innovating in the game. We're definitely getting to the point wheres theres nothing left to learn about the shatters though. Give us our next awesome endgame dungeon that we can farm the shit out of already Kabam!
