  10. The Story So Far: Destroyer Shikinami frets over being unable properly congratulate her sister ship Ayanami for her big assignment. She suddenly finds an "alto sax" and an old film recording, and is moved when she sees her first performance by a jazz band, with that instrument, the "alto sax". Shikinami thinks to herself, "I want Ayanami to hear a performance this emotional," and struggles to learn an instrument for the first time on top of continuing regular Exercises. The morning Ayanami is set to depart on her operation, Shikinami is finally able to let Ayanami hear her song and her true feelings.
  11.
  12. Isonami: I'm so sorry.
  13. I'll delete it immediately...!
  14.
  15. Shikinami: I-It's alright...
  16. Sorry for yelling at you, Isonami.
  17. Iso: No, it's my fault for suddenly taking photos...
  18.
  19. Iso: I've always been watching in secret,
  20. Shiki: ...
  21. Iso: but I happened to have my camera with me today-
  22. Shiki: Wait.
  23.
  24. Shiki: What did you just say?
  25. Iso: ?
  26. That I have my camera with me?
  27. Shiki: Before that.
  28. Iso: I've, always, been, watching
  29.
  30. Shiki: [Shaking]
  31. Iso: in secret...
  32.
  33. [Boom]
  34. Iso: I'm so sorryyyyy!!

  46. * TL Note: these are identical to chapter 2's character bios
  47. Shikinami - Second of the Ayanami-class destroyers, and the main character of this series. She's a good girl at heart but has trouble being honest with herself. She has an interest in the alto sax she found in the warehouse.
  48. Ayanami - First of the Ayanami-class destroyers and Shikinami's older sister. She's a very compassionate oldest sister to Shikinami and her other sisters. Her ability is highly valued, and she has been assigned an important role.
  49. Ooyodo & Akashi: First of the Ooyodo-class light cruisers and an Akashi-class repair ship. Support Shikinami, since they dabbled with jazz in the past.
  50.
  51. Shiki: That's weird, I thought I had managed to hide it.
  52. How did you... find out?
  53. [Mumbling]
  54. [Ba-dump ba-dump]
  55. Iso: Shikinami-chan.
  56.
  57. Iso: That performance you gave Ayanami-chan earlier
  58. was really good!
  59. Shiki: Oh...
  60. Y-You think so?
  61.
  62. Iso: I do!
  63. Shiki: I-I see.
  64.
  65. Iso: And you were enjoying it so much too..
  66. I think you should be more confident!
  67. Shiki: Mmm.. thanks.
  68.
  69. Iso: You've done really well with such a tough genre...
  70. [Fidget]
  71.
  72. Iso: Ad-libbing really is hard, isn't it?
  73. ...but it looks so fun...
  74.
  75. ---
  76.

  78. Shiki: Hey, Isonami.
  79.
  80. Shiki: You sure know a lot about jazz... don't you?
  81. Iso: Eh!?
  82.
  83. Iso: Uhm...
  84. uh...
  85. ...
  86. ...
  87.
  88. [Nodding]
  89.
  90. Shiki: Then
  91. okay.
  92.
  93. Shiki: Come with me for a bit.
  94. Iso: ?

  101. Iso: Wow!
  102.
  103. Iso: A jazz band... all girls!
  104. So cool...!!
  105.
  106. Iso: This must be...
  107. an arrangement of "Goodnight, Ladies", maybe? So good...
  108. Shiki: You think so?
  109. I thought it was "Mary Had a Little Lamb".
  110. Iso: Ah, that might be it too.
  111. Shiki: I think their melodies are similar in some parts, right?
  112. Iso: Yeah, yeah, the phrase in the middle-
  113. -
  114. [Chitter-chatter]
  115.
  116. ---
  117.

  119. Shiki: This is so unlike her.
  120. She's always so quiet...
  121. Seems a little like she's excited?
  122.
  123. Shiki: We could try it,
  124. if you're interested.
  125.
  126. Iso: W-What are you...
  127. Shiki: Jazz, of course.
  128. Iso: I
  129. I can't!
  130.
  131. Iso: ...
  132. It's not something I can...
  133.
  134. ---
  135.
  136. Page 7
  137. Iso: I don't think I'd be any good in front of people...
  138. Shiki: But you're a good photographer, aren't you?
  139. Iso: That's totally different... probably..
  140. [Swoosh]
  141. [Flash flash]
  142.
  143. Iso: I've always admired it, you know...?
  144.
  145. Iso: Expressions that people don't make for cameras
  146. are really interesting.
  147.
  148. Iso: I wonder what kind of mark you leave
  149. on your own world with jazz...
  150.
  151. ---
  152.
  153. Page 8
  154. Iso: There's a world I see through my camera.
  155. I've always thought that
  156. it would be incredible if I could step into that world myself.
  157. But...
  158.
  159. Iso: I don't have that confidence
  160. to take that first step...
  161.
  162. ---
  163.
  164. Page 9
  165. Shiki: Yep.
  166. If that's all, I get it.
  167.
  168. Shiki: I myself
  169. am hardly good at performing in front of people.
  170. (You know that, right?)
  171. Iso: (R-Right...)
  172.
  173. Shiki: Sometimes I have to set it aside for more important things,
  174. But I think I've managed to take that first step forward.
  175.
  176. Shiki: I'm still really bad.
  177. And at some point I might even hate doing this.
  178. ... but I don't think I'll stop.
  179.
  180. Shiki: Because
  181. I can use it to express myself to others.
  182.
  183. ---
  184.
  185. Page 10
  186. Shiki: I'm glad
  187. I started jazz.
  188.

  192. Iso: Do...
  193.
  194. Iso: Do you...
  195. [Creak]
  196.
  197. Iso: Do you think...
  198. I could too?
  199.
  200. Shiki: Yeah.
  201. Definitely.
  202.
  203. ---
  204.
  205. Page 12
  206. Shiki: Al-
  207. Alright then.
  208. If you're okay with it, Isonami,
  209.
  210. Shiki: let's try and play jazz together...
  211.
  212. Iso: [Glooooow]
  213.
  214. Iso: Yeah.
  215. Yeah!
  216. Shiki: [Shock]
  217. Iso: [Swish swosh]
  218. Let's give it a shot, Shikinami-chan!
  219. Shiki: Aren't you a little too excited?
  220.
  221. ---
  222.
  223. Page 13
  224. Shiki: ...!
  225. Wait! That's fine and all,
  226.
  227. Shiki: But instruments!
  228. We need an instrument for you.
  229. Iso: [Gasp]
  230. T-That's right.
  231. Shiki: Mine was in the warehouse,
  232. and there weren't any more...
  233.
  234. Iso: And it depends on the instrument of course,
  235. but I wonder how much it'll end up being?
  236. Shiki: I have a feeling it'll be a lot.
  237. Iso: Ah!
  238. I just bought a camera lens recently, so I'm...
  239. Shiki: Seriously?
  240.
  241. Shiki: (How much was it?)
  242. Iso: (T-That's a secret...)
  243.
  244. Shiki: Hmmm.
  245. We'll try our luck.
  246. Let's ask the Commander...

  273. Shiki/Iso: Excuse us, we'll be heading to the arsenal.
  274.
  275. Shiki: How did we manage
  276. to get instruments this easily?
  277. I can't wrap my head around it...
  278. Iso: B-But he did briefly mention "conditions" attached, right?
  279.
  280. Iso: "If you're going to do this, arrange it like a club activity.
  281. "That means you will need a minimum number of members."
  282.
