  1. *Alignment*#A straight line on which a squad is formed or is to form.
  2. *Covering*#Aligning oneself directly behind the man to one's immediate front while maintaining correct distance.
  3. *Depth*#The space occupied by a squad from front to rear.
  4. *Distance*#The space between men or bodies from front to rear.
  5. *Dressing*#The act or aligning oneself with and covering others within a squad.
  6. *File*#Either two or three men of different ranks who are covering each other.
  7. *Single File*#One Man behind another on a frontage of one at normal marching distance.
  8. *Blank File*#A file in which there is no centre and rear man, or no centre man, due to the inequality of numbers within a squad. This file is the second from the left.
  9. *Flank*#Either side of a squad as opposed to its front or rear.
  10. *Directing Flank*#The flank by which a squad takes its dressing.
  11. $*Frontage*#The extent of ground covered laterally by a squad, measured from flank to flank.
  12. *Incline*#Turn 45°
  13. *Interval*#The lateral space measured between men or bodies of troops on the same alignment.
  14. *Line*#The basic formation in ceremonial drill, whereby the squad is formed in 3 ranks, facing the front
  15. *Markers*#Men employed to mark points on which a movement is to be directed, or by which a formation or alignment is to be regulated.
  16. *Order (Close or Open)*#The distance between ranks in line. This is either 75 cm (30 ins) or 150 cm (60 ins) depending on circumstances.
  17. *Rank*#A line of men side by side.
  18. *Squad*#A sub–unit formed for drill.
  19. *Regulation Pause*#Refers to the short pause between two movements of drill, which is the equivalent of two marching paces in quick time, i.e. forty movements to the minute.
  20. *Cadence*#The uniform rhythm in which a movement is executed or the number of steps or counts per minute at which a movement is executed. Drill movements are normally executed at the cadence of quick time or double time. Quick time is the cadence of 120 counts or steps per minute; double time is the cadence of 180 counts or steps per minute.
