  1. >Finally, after a lot of climbing you finally reach the peak of the hill.
  2. >You sit down on the roof of an old abandoned car and look around. Taking in the scrapyard below you.
  3. >Taking your rucksack off and bringing it to your chest, you pull a water bottle out and take a well deserved drink.
  4. >You pull out a small black box and stare at it. Thinking about how she's doing at home alone.
  5. >As you put it away you continue surveying the valley of trash you sit above.
  6. >Salvaging for parts is no easy job.
  7. >From your perch you spot a fairly sized dumping ground for electronics.
  8. >If anything it's a place to start.
  9. >You start to descend from your trash hill, muttering to yourself.
  10. "The things I do for love."
  11. >On your way down, your foot catches on something, throwing you off balance.
  12. >You tumble all the way to the bottom, hitting several objects on the way down.
  13. >You hit the ground and lay there. Pain ripping through your entire body.
  14. >As you stand up, your leg almost gives way forcing you to grab on to something for support.
  15. >You look down and find a large cut across your lower leg.
  16. "Fuck!"
  17. >With your unscathed leg you kick at the hill.
  18. "Fucking fucker!"
  19. "Well.. Nothing a few bandages won't fix."
  20. >You press on, limping towards the pile of broken computer monitors and other such appliances.
  21. >Each step sends another bolt of pain through your leg.
  22. >Finally you reach your destination and fall to the ground.
  23. >You start pawing at the rubbish before you.
  24. >Eventually you put your rucksack down and begin loading it with your spoils.
  25. >Taking another swig of water, you throw your backpack on again and stand up.
  26. "That takes electronics off my list, now I need something to fix her arm with."
  27. "Just something for a forearm will do."
  28. >You set off around the scrapyard again.
  29.
  30. >After some time you finally exit the scrapyard.
  31. >The walk home is painful, but uneventful.
  32. >A dark brown sky hangs above you. A canopy of grey cloud lying atop that.
  33. >The world ain't as pretty as it used to be.
  34. >After AI, everything sort of went downhill from there.
  35. >At least you got the chance to "borrow" one of their systems.
  36. >For the past year or so you'd been building a proper body for it.
  37. >Your girlfriend of sorts has been confined to your phone for several months now.
  38. >At least you still got to spend time with her and bond with her.
  39. >But things are about to get a lot better.
  40. >Hopefully.
  41. >You finally arrive home.
  42. >First thing's first. Treatment.
  43. >You set your bag down on the kitchen table and open one of the cupboards. Pulling out a small first aid kit.
  44. >After cleaning your wound and wrapping it up, you're all set.
  45. >Picking up your rucksack again you make way for your workshop. Ignoring the groans of your stomach.
  46. >You enter your workshop and pull the light switch. The room is filled with a dim yellow glow.
  47. >On the counter against the wall sits a body, pieced together by all sorts of junk. Wires hanging all over the place.
  48. >It's missing it's left arm.
  49. >The counter is covered in tools and a left hand you'd already built last week.
  50. >You approach your counter and grab your phone from it's charging dock. Turning it on.
  51. "Hey, Monika."
  52. >"Anon! I'm so glad you returned safely!"
  53. >"All in one piece I hope?"
  54. >You set to work fiddling with the body in front of you as you tell her about your fall.
  55. >"You poor thing. I hope you took care of yourself first."
  56. "Of course I did. Don't want it getting infected."
  57. >It probably already is, but it'll be worth it.
  58. >You quickly build her left forearm together out of spare junk and attach it. Wiring it up as well.
  59. >You've become quite good at this over the year.
  60. >Memories of when the body before you was just a head come flooding back as you work at attaching the left hand.
  61.
  62. >Monika has been with you the entire time, cheering you on from the sidelines.
  63. >"How close are you to finishing my body, Anon?"
  64. >You flip the body over and open the back of it's head, beginning to work with the electronics inside.
  65. >"Anon?"
  66. "S-Sorry, I'm just busy working is all."
  67. >"Oh, sorry I didn't mean to interrupt."
  68. "You're no bother Moni, I mean it."
  69. "I'm almost done, just a few tweaks on the inside to go and then I can plug you in to give her a whirl."
  70. >"I'm so excited! I can't wait to finally be able to hug you."
  71. "Me too, honey. Me too."
  72. >After some hours of tedious work and idle chit chat you finally hook your phone up to the body.
  73. "That should be it."
  74. "I'm not really sure how to.. Upload you though.."
  75. >Fuck. You probably should have thought of that.
  76. >"Here, let me try something."
  77. >You step back and let your girlfriend take over.
  78. >Nothing for a few moments.
  79. >Not even her voice.
  80. >You start to get scared.
  81. >Suddenly the body in front of you jolts to life.
  82. >The soulless eyes turn a bright shade of green.
  83. >Excitement grips you as the body before you sits upright.
  84. "Monika!?
  85. >After several bursts of static and low hums the voice box kicks into action.
  86. >"-non?"
  87. >"C-Can you hear me?"
  88. "I can! I can hear you!"
  89. >The girl would smile, but it has no mouth.
  90. >In fact the body has the basics of a human and not much else.
  91. >No hair for her trademark bow.
  92. >No lips to kiss you with.
  93. >Those will come in the future.
  94. >For now, you should celebrate the little victories.
  95. "Can you move your body, Monika?"
  96. >Her right arm lifts gracefully off the table and into the air. She moves it about freely.
  97. "What about your fingers?"
  98. >Her hand flattens out, before each finger curls up slowly to form a fist.
  99. >Looks like it's working.
  100. "Try your left."
  101. >She does the same movements with her other arm and hand.
  102. "Good."
  103. "Should probably test your sight too. Can you see me?"
  104. >"I can."
  105. >You hold up your hand.
  106. "How many fingers am I holding up?"
  107. >"Three."
  108. "And now?"
  109. >"One."
  110.
  111. "Seems to be working fine to me."
  112. >You sigh in relief.
  113. >Now on to the next step. Standing.
  114. >You position yourself in front of the girl and instruct her to push off of the counter.
  115. >She does. Her feet hit the ground with a metallic thud.
  116. >You hold her waist to support her at first. Slowly you pull away.
  117. >Monika manages to stand on her own perfectly fine.
  118. >"So far so good. Right?"
  119. >You flash her two thumbs up.
  120. "Right!"
  121. >You're starting to get nervous now.
  122. >After all, the big day has finally come.
  123. >And it's about to get even bigger.
  124. >You lift your backpack and reach into it.
  125. "Hey, Monika?"
  126. >"Yes Anon?"
  127. "We've been together for about a year now."
  128. >"Three hundred and seventy days, twenty hours, forty three minutes and fifteen seconds to be exact."
  129. >You pull the small black box from the bag and turn to her.
  130. >Taking a deep breath to try and calm your nerves.
  131. >"Anon is that.."
  132. >You kneel down on one knee.
  133. >And open the box.
  134. >"Oh my god Anon!"
  135. >Monika is presented with a silver ring, adorned with a bright green gem to match her eyes.
  136. "Monika."
  137. "Will you ma-"
  138. "YES I WILL ANON!"
  139. >A wave of euphoria washes over you as you stand up.
  140. >Monika lunges into you and grabs you, almost throwing you to the ground.
  141. >You wrap your arms around her and hold her tightly.
  142. >"Anon I never thought you'd ask!"
  143. >"Oh my god!"
  144. >"I love you!"
  145. >Tears begin to form at your eyes as you reply.
  146. "I love you too, Monika."
