- >Finally, after a lot of climbing you finally reach the peak of the hill.
- >You sit down on the roof of an old abandoned car and look around. Taking in the scrapyard below you.
- >Taking your rucksack off and bringing it to your chest, you pull a water bottle out and take a well deserved drink.
- >You pull out a small black box and stare at it. Thinking about how she's doing at home alone.
- >As you put it away you continue surveying the valley of trash you sit above.
- >Salvaging for parts is no easy job.
- >From your perch you spot a fairly sized dumping ground for electronics.
- >If anything it's a place to start.
- >You start to descend from your trash hill, muttering to yourself.
- "The things I do for love."
- >On your way down, your foot catches on something, throwing you off balance.
- >You tumble all the way to the bottom, hitting several objects on the way down.
- >You hit the ground and lay there. Pain ripping through your entire body.
- >As you stand up, your leg almost gives way forcing you to grab on to something for support.
- >You look down and find a large cut across your lower leg.
- "Fuck!"
- >With your unscathed leg you kick at the hill.
- "Fucking fucker!"
- "Well.. Nothing a few bandages won't fix."
- >You press on, limping towards the pile of broken computer monitors and other such appliances.
- >Each step sends another bolt of pain through your leg.
- >Finally you reach your destination and fall to the ground.
- >You start pawing at the rubbish before you.
- >Eventually you put your rucksack down and begin loading it with your spoils.
- >Taking another swig of water, you throw your backpack on again and stand up.
- "That takes electronics off my list, now I need something to fix her arm with."
- "Just something for a forearm will do."
- >You set off around the scrapyard again.
- >After some time you finally exit the scrapyard.
- >The walk home is painful, but uneventful.
- >A dark brown sky hangs above you. A canopy of grey cloud lying atop that.
- >The world ain't as pretty as it used to be.
- >After AI, everything sort of went downhill from there.
- >At least you got the chance to "borrow" one of their systems.
- >For the past year or so you'd been building a proper body for it.
- >Your girlfriend of sorts has been confined to your phone for several months now.
- >At least you still got to spend time with her and bond with her.
- >But things are about to get a lot better.
- >Hopefully.
- >You finally arrive home.
- >First thing's first. Treatment.
- >You set your bag down on the kitchen table and open one of the cupboards. Pulling out a small first aid kit.
- >After cleaning your wound and wrapping it up, you're all set.
- >Picking up your rucksack again you make way for your workshop. Ignoring the groans of your stomach.
- >You enter your workshop and pull the light switch. The room is filled with a dim yellow glow.
- >On the counter against the wall sits a body, pieced together by all sorts of junk. Wires hanging all over the place.
- >It's missing it's left arm.
- >The counter is covered in tools and a left hand you'd already built last week.
- >You approach your counter and grab your phone from it's charging dock. Turning it on.
- "Hey, Monika."
- >"Anon! I'm so glad you returned safely!"
- >"All in one piece I hope?"
- >You set to work fiddling with the body in front of you as you tell her about your fall.
- >"You poor thing. I hope you took care of yourself first."
- "Of course I did. Don't want it getting infected."
- >It probably already is, but it'll be worth it.
- >You quickly build her left forearm together out of spare junk and attach it. Wiring it up as well.
- >You've become quite good at this over the year.
- >Memories of when the body before you was just a head come flooding back as you work at attaching the left hand.
- >Monika has been with you the entire time, cheering you on from the sidelines.
- >"How close are you to finishing my body, Anon?"
- >You flip the body over and open the back of it's head, beginning to work with the electronics inside.
- >"Anon?"
- "S-Sorry, I'm just busy working is all."
- >"Oh, sorry I didn't mean to interrupt."
- "You're no bother Moni, I mean it."
- "I'm almost done, just a few tweaks on the inside to go and then I can plug you in to give her a whirl."
- >"I'm so excited! I can't wait to finally be able to hug you."
- "Me too, honey. Me too."
- >After some hours of tedious work and idle chit chat you finally hook your phone up to the body.
- "That should be it."
- "I'm not really sure how to.. Upload you though.."
- >Fuck. You probably should have thought of that.
- >"Here, let me try something."
- >You step back and let your girlfriend take over.
- >Nothing for a few moments.
- >Not even her voice.
- >You start to get scared.
- >Suddenly the body in front of you jolts to life.
- >The soulless eyes turn a bright shade of green.
- >Excitement grips you as the body before you sits upright.
- "Monika!?
- >After several bursts of static and low hums the voice box kicks into action.
- >"-non?"
- >"C-Can you hear me?"
- "I can! I can hear you!"
- >The girl would smile, but it has no mouth.
- >In fact the body has the basics of a human and not much else.
- >No hair for her trademark bow.
- >No lips to kiss you with.
- >Those will come in the future.
- >For now, you should celebrate the little victories.
- "Can you move your body, Monika?"
- >Her right arm lifts gracefully off the table and into the air. She moves it about freely.
- "What about your fingers?"
- >Her hand flattens out, before each finger curls up slowly to form a fist.
- >Looks like it's working.
- "Try your left."
- >She does the same movements with her other arm and hand.
- "Good."
- "Should probably test your sight too. Can you see me?"
- >"I can."
- >You hold up your hand.
- "How many fingers am I holding up?"
- >"Three."
- "And now?"
- >"One."
- "Seems to be working fine to me."
- >You sigh in relief.
- >Now on to the next step. Standing.
- >You position yourself in front of the girl and instruct her to push off of the counter.
- >She does. Her feet hit the ground with a metallic thud.
- >You hold her waist to support her at first. Slowly you pull away.
- >Monika manages to stand on her own perfectly fine.
- >"So far so good. Right?"
- >You flash her two thumbs up.
- "Right!"
- >You're starting to get nervous now.
- >After all, the big day has finally come.
- >And it's about to get even bigger.
- >You lift your backpack and reach into it.
- "Hey, Monika?"
- >"Yes Anon?"
- "We've been together for about a year now."
- >"Three hundred and seventy days, twenty hours, forty three minutes and fifteen seconds to be exact."
- >You pull the small black box from the bag and turn to her.
- >Taking a deep breath to try and calm your nerves.
- >"Anon is that.."
- >You kneel down on one knee.
- >And open the box.
- >"Oh my god Anon!"
- >Monika is presented with a silver ring, adorned with a bright green gem to match her eyes.
- "Monika."
- "Will you ma-"
- "YES I WILL ANON!"
- >A wave of euphoria washes over you as you stand up.
- >Monika lunges into you and grabs you, almost throwing you to the ground.
- >You wrap your arms around her and hold her tightly.
- >"Anon I never thought you'd ask!"
- >"Oh my god!"
- >"I love you!"
- >Tears begin to form at your eyes as you reply.
- "I love you too, Monika."
