  2. Chapter 1: This War Never Changes
  3. =-=-=-=-=
  4.
  5. >the constant sounds of machine gun fire rung out through the trenches
  6. >shouts of all kinds
  7. >frantic, excited, scared
  8. >each were present
  9. >you looked over the edge of the trench just as a bullet whizzes by your head
  10. >*CLANK*
  11. >a splatter of crimson washes over your shoulder and stains deep
  12. >death was something that came with war
  13. >it was inevitable that humanity would end up in this boat
  14. >ironically, the war to end all wars still hadn't ended
  15. >you remember the "They'll be home by Christmas!" propaganda they would hang around your city before the Battle of Washington D.C.
  16. >that was before the Central Powers blasted through the US Navy like a hot knife through butter
  17. >it had been three years ago, in 2014, that they got boots on the soil
  18. >and here you were with everyone the army could muster up at a moments notice
  19. >backs to the Mississippi
  20. >nowhere left to run
  21. >clutch the Enfield M1917 tightly and grimace at the body currently leaning against your back
  22. >Winston
  23. >this was a kid that just got here yesterday
  24. >not a day over 16
  25. >'anyone they could muster'
  26. >sling the rifle over your shoulder and begin pulling the body towards the pile
  27. >if they aren't taken out and burned soon, the whole battalion would get some incurable sickness
  28. >well, that's what the doctor kept saying
  29. >something about the new chemicals those bastard Germans were shelling seeping into the pores of the dead and releasing some gas if they aren't burned
  30. >all drivel as far as you're concerned
  31. >"GAS MASKS ON!"
  32. >the body you were dragging dropped instantly as you instinctively grabbed for your mask
  33. >it's not there
  34. >what
  35. >shout at yourself in your head
  36. >IT'S NOT THERE!
  37. >look down to see a bag on the body
  38. >open it and throw the mask on
  39. >unroll your sleeves and tie them tight at the wrist
  40. >the less skin showing the less damage you'll have to endure
  41. >tie your pant legs and stuff them into your boots
  42. >remember, these filters don't last long
  43. >new, experimental gas mask designs stolen from the Germans that filter more toxins out
  44. >grab the two standard issue filters and stuff them in your pockets
  45. >just in time
  46. >a shell expelling yellow smoke from it's back end cascaded through the sky in an arc
  47. >headed right for you
  48. >leave the body Anon, it's not worth the risk
  49. >the true patriot in your head said otherwise
  50. >grab the wrist of the dead serviceman and pull him at top speed towards the shouting voices further into the network of maze like ditches
  51. >drop to your knees in front of the several foot tall stack of cadavers on the back of a wagon
  52. >holy hell was that close
  53. >toss the body of Winston onto the others and say a quick prayer
  54. >if a bullet can deliver someone to god's kingdom, then maybe your words will sweeten the deal
  55. >a gruff man with a five O'Clock shadow launched his hand out to your shoulder and squeezed tightly
  56. >"Alright, Private Anon, you seem in fine shape. I've got a job for you."
  57. >see the two silver rectangles connected by small lines on his chest
  58. >seems the Captain found you
  59. >nod slowly
  60. >"I've rounded up twenty other soldiers and told them to wait for a signal. Command told me to send a few people through No Man's Land towards those bastards so the rest of us could retreat. You're leading them in the charge. You'll know the signal when you hear it."
  61. >eyes widen and your body starts shaking
  62. >this isn't what they said would happen
  63. >no man left behind, right?
  64. >try to come to terms with this
  65. >desertion meant firing squad and following orders meant dying at the business end of an MG 08
  66. >grit your teeth, tighten your lips, sneer, and nod
  67. >he slaps your shoulder and heads off to ready everything
  68. >back to the front trench
  69. >pull the Enfield off your back and affix the bayonet as per protocol
  70. >"MEN! KNOW THAT YOU'RE DYING FOR AMERICA! FOR YOUR COUNTRY! CHARGE!"
  71. >signal given
  72. >climb up to the soil and begin a mad dash towards the enemy trenches nearly two hundred yards ahead
  73. >*KERCHUNK*
  74. >keep running
  75. >just keep running
  76. >a loud explosion from behind rocked your everything, sending you tumbling into the mud
  77. >stumble up from the muck and continue on your suicide mission
  78. >*KERCHUNK*
  79. >a mortar shell landed a few dozen feet in front of you, nestling a crater between two spools of barbed wire and tank traps
  80. >*KERCHUNK*
  81. >shout at your legs to move faster
  82. >uh oh
  83. >mortar shell headed straight for you
  84. >run as fast as possible
  85. >*BOOOOOOOM*
  86. >everything went black
  87.
  88. >ugh
  89. >feelslikefuzzandkitchenwareclattering.phonograph
  90. >look at the hole currently above your head
  91. >that's right
  92. >a mortar landed right behind you
  93. >*KERCHUNK*
  94. >*BOOOOOOOOM*
  95. >the mortars never stop firing
  96. >it just keeps sounding off over and over
  97. >the rifle that had been in your hands laid in two seperate halves, one stuck into the dirt and the other resting against the dark muck several yards in front of it
  98. >damn it
  99. >you're stuck in a hole in the middle of a warzone
  100. >no rifle, just the 1911 at your side
  101. >chuckle lightly
  102. >just your sort of luck
  103. >'American's never die!'
  104. >the propaganda poster from school emblazoned in your skull
  105. >a giant boot with an iron cross on the side stomping down at small Americans who refuse to fall under heel
  106. >well, you didn't die
  107. >best get yourself back up there
  108. >start trying to scale the muddy walls
  109. >no luck
  110. >too high to reach the edge to pull yourself up
  111. >look back at the seperate gun parts
  112. >if you could get just another few feet up, you could get out
  113. >stick the butt of the gun up out of the mud, making sure the broken stock was in the ground sturdy
  114. >breath in
  115. >breath out
  116. >you can do this Anon
  117. >rush at the broken gun and use it like a platform, launching up just high enough to get your arms over the edge
  118. >frantically grab at anything as you feel yourself sliding back slightly
  119. >fall back into the pit
  120. >damn it
  121. >stand back up and try to dust yourself off
  122. >breath in
  123. >rush at the stock and jump off again, this time aiming a little further to the right
  124. >manage to get enough of a grip to begin pulling yourself up
  125. >as you crest the pit's entrance you try to locate where the mortars are coming from
  126. >hear a faint thwomp from somewhere to the east
  127. >begin your rush back across No Man's Land
  128. >gunfire immediately turns your way and you're just barely running fast enough not to become a statistic
  129. >try to locate an entrance into their trench
  130. >can't find one
  131. >welp
  132. >better make your own
  133. >run directly for the barbed wire edge of their trench
  134. >jump as high as you can try to turn 180 degrees
  135. >smack your back against the angled wood lining of their trench
  136. >in a split second you see the situation to your right
  137. >see three soldiers
  138. >immediately recognize the flags on their helmets
  139. >two germans and an austro-hungarian
  140. >manage to pull my 1911 from my holster and gun them all down
  141. >shoot a quick glance to the left
  142. >nothing yet
  143. >rush over towards the dead soldiers and grab one of the german's guns
  144. >unlike anything you've ever held, but at least you know how to use it
  145. >see an iron cross and a model designation on the top
  146. >STG-64
  147. >yup, you remember seeing a diagram on these last time they gave you information about the enemy
  148. >automatic fire capable through a switch
  149. >chambered in some weird round you can't remember
  150. >chamber a round and start running towards the mortar thwomps
  151. >round a corner
  152. >a squad of germans caught from behind
  153. >gun 'em down
  154. >click click click
  155. >they're already down, go for a different one
  156. >rush forward and pick up a seperate STG-64
  157. >look around and see a few others
  158. >eject the magazines and put them anywhere I could fit them
  159. >back on task
  160.
  161. >it took a few more germans and an austrian, but eventually you're able to take care of the mortar squad and relieve some of the pressure on your trench
  162. >go prone as you hear a large piece of machinery kick on a hundred or so feet off
  163. >there wasn't any doubt
  164. >they were bringing out the Höllenfeuer
  165. >or what you like to call absolute annihilation
  166. >as the vehicle moved past a chuck of ruined concrete, you could see the cab of it
  167. >a giant group of tubes meshed together on a swiveling turret
  168. >it starts aiming towards our trenches slowly
  169. >look around for anything
  170. >wait
  171. >look at the trio of bodies at the mortar
  172. >did they even teach you how to use this thing?
  173. >welp
  174. >best to try then never to have tried at all
  175. >get a shell and aim the tube as best as you could assume
  176. >fwomp
  177. >~PPPPPHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW~
  178. >*BOOOOOOM*
  179. >just a little off
  180. >aim again
  181. >just barely get it off before getting tagged in the right shoulder by a bullet
  182. >whirl around and drop onto your side, shooting at least half a dozen rounds into the now bullet-cushion
  183. >*BOOOOOOOM*
  184. >and the sound of clattering metal flying around
  185. >pick yourself back up
  186. >what's the plan now?
  187. >there wasn't any other than a last ditch assault
  188. >see another mortar team across the trenches
  189. >that feeling in the back of your head lets you know they absolutely saw you
  190. >they know
  191. >~PHEEEEEE-"
  192. >the whistle of a mortar shell coming from their direction
  193. >disappear back into the trenches
  194. >or at least think you did
  195. >by the time you realize it, they're shelling you with round after round
  196. >~"-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW~"
  197. >they've narrowed down the position
  198. >take cover behind anything you can, a couple wooden crates
  199. >*BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM*
  200. >black out again
