Congress to investigate the possibility of taxing virtual assets.
  16.
  17. If it all sounds like the third sequel to "The Matrix," count Pasick among the crowd who was initially taken aback by the prospect of augmenting his laminated press pass with the cartoonish one his character wears in Second Life.
  18.
  19. "My initial reaction was a mix of surprise that we were doing this and a feeling that it was slightly bizarre," said the 30 year old reporter, who is based in London. "But even as I was having the conversation, I realized that there was a lot of potential here, and this could be a great way for Reuters to get into these 3 D virtual worlds. This is an experiment for us, and we're hoping to learn a lot."
  20.
  21. While those virtual worlds also could be unknown to consumers who haven't played a video game since Ms. Pac Man, online communities have been multiplying in recent years. Second Life, created in 2003 at Linden Labs, claims more than 950,000 players, close to 400,000 of whom can be considered regulars, and Second Life's population is growing by about 36 percent monthly. dollars can be exchanged for Linden dollars. The avatars can take on just about any name and physical attribute some people create semi accurate versions of themselves while others use the community to live vicariously and anonymously by posing as someone totally different.
  22.
  23. Socializing seems to be the main draw, but people who play Second Life acquire property, set up businesses, and sell and trade goods and services. Linden's vice president of marketing, David Fleck, said one ambitious Second Life property baroness has become a Donald Trump of sorts. Linden reports more than $7 million in user transactions in September.
  24.
  25. Pasick, who posts under the Adam Reuters byline, isn't the first journalist in the community. Publications include the Second Life Herald and In the Grid magazine, and there's also an embedded reporter named Wagner James Au who has been writing stories since 2003.
  26.
  27. Fleck said Au has broken several stories that were picked up by the mainstream media including a revolt in Second Life over a taxation issue. (Signing up to Second Life is free, but players pay fees and taxes for property.) He also wrote extensively about a Second Life virtual visit from former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, whose avatar appeared for a public interview in August.
  28.
  29. "Second Life is set up very specifically around kind of a free market economy," Pasick said. "That meshed really well with Reuters' expertise in financial journalism and covering economies and that kind of thing."
  30.
  31. Reuters has a virtual building in the community, and readers who want to discuss Pasick's stories can quite literally teleport their characters to a special Second Life atrium a sort of lounge where players' avatars materialize and online conversations take place.
  32.
  33. Reuters' presence in Second Life is being supported enthusiastically by the news agency's chief executive officer, Tom Glocer, who is a Second Life regular and who released a statement about the move yesterday, saying, "We're making Reuters part of a new generation."
  34.
  35. But the decision raises the question: How will Pasick write about a company that in effect plays God over the virtual world he is covering? Pasick insists he isn't getting any special favors from Second Life, and "if something comes up where there's a story that casts the company in a negative light, I certainly wouldn't shy away from that."
  36.
  37. Fleck said Reuters initially approached Linden Labs about Pasick's new beat, and the reporter has been treated no differently than any other user.
  38.
  39. "I truly believe that Reuters is not going to provide us with any special coverage or afford us any luxuries of not printing the stories that we don't want printed," Fleck said. "And that's the way we want it. That's what Second Life is. There's full transparency to everything we're doing."
  40.
  41. Pasick said he's a casual gamer who had played a little bit of Grand Theft Auto and the Sims, but he wasn't involved in an online community before Second Life.
  42.
  43. "I knew what Second Life was, but I hadn't tried it," he said. "There was quite a bit of a learning curve. When you first get in, it's kind of clumsy to get around, and you don't really know what's going on. But after a few weeks it comes a lot more easily."
  44.
  45. Pasick said he's had trouble explaining his new gig, but it's getting easier.
  46.
  47. "My friends and family who were initially pretty dubious and I don't blame them are starting to get a little used to the idea," Pasick said. "My mother has an avatar now."
