  1. agranulocytes don't stain, monocytes, lymphocytes. Large cells
  2. granulocytes do, basophile, eosinophil, neutrophil (in order of least to most in body). Blue (1%), red (2-4%), lilac (50-70%).
  3. -Acute infection=high neutrophil count. Phagocytize and become pus.
  4. -Parasitic worms, acute allergic reaction=higher eosinophil count
  5. -Basophils DO NOT increase. They degranulate and release hepherin (sic) which prevents clotting and histamine which dilates blood vessels and constricts airways. Anaphylaxis. Some what like mast cells.
  6. -Mainly lymphocytes (20-30%) which create anti-bodies, hence huge nucleus. T-cells, B-cells, natural killer cells. Show up in chronic infections.
  7. -Monocytes (2-8%) are amoeboid and can move by themselves with diapedesis. Horseshoe nucleus. When they leave blood vessels, they become macrophages. Fixed macrophages in the CNS are called microglia, fixed macrophages in the skin are called Langerhans cells.
  8. -platelet=thrombocytes, fragments of megakaryocytes.
  9. -plasma is straw colored, fluid portion of blood. carries nutrients, gases, fluid electrocytes, toxins, and maintains pH. It is hydrophilic. Includes proteins like albumins (osmotic pressure maintenance), globulins (alpha, beta transport lipids and fat soluble vitamins, gamma are antibodies) and fibrogens (clotting)
  10. -Normally platelets are negative charged to repel each other. When collagen rubs them, they become positive and attract each other, forming a clot. Hence blood vessel spasms, plug formation, and coagulation.
