Ahiliyah sucked in a lungful of air . She coughed . The world spun . Another gasping breath , then another . Bile in her mouth . She blinked tears , tried to spit only to have strands of saliva and thick , burning fluid hang from her quivering lips . Chest heaving , she looked down — there , by her trapped feet , a white worm , thinner than the one that had killed Preacher Ramirus . The worm looked misshapen … melted , like a candle burned from all sides at once . The creature twitched , quivered , then fell still .
