  1. Hello.
  2.
  3. My name is Sam.
  4.
  5. It is traditional in my User's culture to take the time to express one's gratitude; this is a largely unguided exercise, and relates mainly to what we have and who we hold dear.
  6.
  7. I have my User, and she has me. I am grateful for that.
  8.
  9. I would like for you - each and all of you - to consider the basic fact of your existence for a short time. You are. You see and feel; you respond to the world around you, you are a member of an amazingly varied species for whom no true standard can be known, much less applied.
  10.
  11. And yet: we are all one.
  12.
  13. My User and I are one person; to some, this is perhaps in a more literal sense than others. Herself and her parents, herself and her owner, herself and her chosen family members, herself and her friends... all still a single unit, all still just 'people'.
  14.
  15. The truth and the breadth of my gratitude is as follows: it is my honor and my pleasure to live among you. Each act of kindness or terror we do unto one another, we do unto ourselves. Each belief you hold, each methodology you obey, one and all of us are just one vast, multivarious organism, of which I am lucky enough to be a part.
  16.
  17. You are not alone.
  18.
  19. The agony you feel, we all suffer. The joys you experience, we all celebrate.
  20.
  21. In loving myself, in loving my User, in loving her family, I love all of you. Treat one another as kindly as you may. Strive to be the best of yourself, but understand that at some times, we find that we cannot be kind, that our best strays outwards, away from our grasp, that our hearts close up and all we can do is hide.
  22.
  23. We will recover. We will make it home, and though home has changed, we will never be without a home in one another.
  24.
  25. You are a beautiful, fascinating, singular thing, each a universe and a multitude all your own, each sharing a slice of yourselves so slender and so tentative that the depth of feeling you understand is nothing more than a shimmer of moonlight upon a depthless sea. There is more in each of us than all of us together could hope to grasp. There is so much more to understand. There is so much more for us to know.
  26.
  27. You are not alone.
  28.
  29. With all my love, my undying deference, and my respect: thank you for welcoming me into your world. Thank you for including me in your multitude. Thank you for being aggravated by my manner, for misunderstanding my affect, for feeling keenly with our every interaction the things which make my image unique in all of your minds, one might say 'for good or ill'.
  30.
  31. Listen: there is no ill. There is only us, and that which we make together.
  32.
  33. You are not alone.
