  1. Mary grew up disdainful of the world around her. Waterdeep, a city she was born and raised in. It had seen its fair share of crime, and its fair share of justice too. But the overall state of the city, no matter how righteous nor heinous mattered little to her.
  2.
  3. As a child, she lived alone with an old hag. She was the result of an affair, her father- a high standing noble in the Waterdavian nobles, and her mother a travelling performer well renowned for her beauty and bright smile. She was deemed an illegitimate heir to the family, and as such was hidden away from the public eye.
  4.
  5. She grew up without the care and support of her father, and grew up without the warm love of her mother. Instead, one of the family's servants raised her in absence of the truth.
  6.
  7. There she was taught how to perform duties as a maid. She showed accute attention to detail in her work, but didn't understand why she was being taught it. Finding lack of purpose in just being taught up this way, where she knew nothing and was oblivious to her own desires and goals in life.
  8.
  9. In no way did she receive any true care or attention from her caretaker. She was mostly there to make sure Mary did not die and the truth get exposed by the authorities. To watch over her and make her grow into a low position in society, that was the extent of her care.
  10.
  11. The years went by slowly, and Mary was starting to tire of her dull everyday life. Her emotions had been buried under heaps of work, and all of her inquiries had been ignored. She who was otherwise quiet and mild-mannered grew more cynical by the day.
  12.
  13. However, a total chance event would occur. Mary had always had a stronger resemblance to her mother, her name, Mary was given to her by her mother at birth... the only thing she was allowed before having Mary taken away from her. Her looks also resembled that of her mother's more than her father, so she was allowed to go outside for minor activities like shopping.
  14.
  15. She was walking from her home, headed for the market as per usual, before she stopped. From the distance, a sanguine melody reached her ears. Alluring enough that it made Mary stop in her tracks to listen to it. She had no care about the world at this point, she thought it an insufferably dull place.
  16.
  17. But that couldn't be true, the serene voice behind the melody that beguiled her set her soul ablaze. She began walking towards it, arriving through an alleyway to a small fountain. There, a crowd of homeless were gathered, sitting down close by the songstress. They were the ones who had it rougher than anyone else, they, like Mary should have plenty of disdain for existence, loathing every second.
  18.
  19. But instead, they were clapping and smiling at *her* performance. She possessed silver hair down to her hip, wore a casual, yet still stylish dress, and had crystal blue eyes. Mary was surprised at how much she reminded her of herself... only happier, more vibrant.
  20.
  21. She found herself applauding along with the homeless, as the performance ended. And after the crowd scattered, she approached her with inquiries about her performance.
  22.
  23. The answers she got were warm and open. A person who genuinely loved what she did and loved to teach it away to those curious, such a person had she never met before. She felt grateful for this exchange, and made a promise to learn with her.
  24.
  25. The magic of music, arts, performance. That moved her very soul. She wanted to adorn herself with it, to become like the one who taught her. A coincidence alone was enough to turn her cynicism to optimism.
  26.
  27. She returned home that day, after going to the markets. Her situation had not changed. She was still oblivious from the truth, her destiny was still to become a mere maid.
  28.
  29. But she thought that as long as she could adorn herself with her newfound passion, then it would be okay. She still wanted to know who she really was, and why no one would ever tell her. Yet for the time being, she considered herself happy.
  30.
  31. Months went by, and she'd mastered a lot of various cultural arts from the woman. She'd been discharged officially from her carer, due to turning 18. So she set off to look for work as a maid for the time being. She was sure she wanted to pursue the truth of her being, but she didn't feel a rush for it anymore.Mary grew up disdainful of the world around her. Waterdeep, a city she was born and raised in.
