- The Great Works are a set of six alchemical concoctions of legendary stature. These elixirs can only be produced by the most skilled and equipped of alchemists, requiring extreme precision and very rare ingredients, and are regarded as the absolute peak of the art insofar as mortals are concerned.
- The six Works are:
- The Panacea: An elixir capable of 'cleansing' the body. What this means is manifold--it simply fixes anything and everything that is wrong with you, whatever that means. Mundane diseases, malefic magic and curses, mere injuries or a body mangled utterly beyond repair, the Panacea essentially recreates you as new. Only one Alchemist on Elstren knows how to create the Panacea currently, and they are a hermit who lives in a very remote location, offering them only to those worthy to make the journey. The Panacea is notably difficult to produce mostly for its complexity. While its ingredients are fairly mundane and almost reflect more 'potent' versions of those present in typical healing elixirs, it would be charitable to call the amount of equipment, expertise and precision required to make the Panacea 'absolutely prohibitive.'
- Soulrend: Soulrend is an extremely lacunic fluid and the most potent toxin that is physically possible, given that it is nearly instantly lethal at virtually any dose. In its stable liquid form, it is tasteless, a dull grey that quickly disappears into any liquid, and smells very faintly of ozone. Upon ingestion, Soulrend simply kills you--the magic it contains suffuses your body and within seconds, your soul has been eaten away as if by acid. Until recently, no one alive knew how to make Soulrend as information of it often disappears swiftly, but the alchemist Cyril was contracted to reproduce it by an Angel, who provided him with the necessary steps.
- Endless Reverie: Reverently titled and thoroughly sought after, this lacunic substance grants anyone who drinks enough of it eternal life... so long as they don't get themselves killed, anyway. Its recipe has been oft lost, but is intuitive enough that individual alchemists often rediscover it as an extrapolation of similar but weaker concoctions. It is also fairly consistent and straightforward to make, but its ingredients are exceptionally costly and some are illegal and it requires highly sophisticated equipment, and so if it should ever appear, it is often in the hands of the ultra-wealthy.
