  1. From leash the hound was loosened, / the bear sprang through the brake,
  2. When that the spouse of Kriemhild / did wish him to o'ertake.
  3. He sought a pathless thicket, / but yet it could not be,
  4. As bruin fondly hoped it, / that from the hunter he was free.

  6. Then from his horse alighted / the knight of spirit high,
  7. And gan a running after. / Bruin all unguardedly
  8. Was ta'en, and could escape not. / Him caught straightway the knight,
  9. And soon all unwounded / had him bound in fetters tight.
