  1. Within his mind he closed on a small bit of white mana, the memory of a long-ago farm now buried beneath the glaciers. As the beast swept toward him, he pulled that bit of brightness to him, fanning it within his mind like an ember until it blazed beyond white, into a new rainbow of unspoken colors. He fed it into an ancient spell, forgotten now but remembered by the Church when he was a boy — a spell used to neutralize wizards.

  3. The Jaya-faced apparition was almost upon him now, and he waited until the last moment before unleashing it. Not at the nightmare phantom, but rather at the necromancer himself.

  5. Lim-Dûl exploded in white light, beacons streaming from his fingertips, his mouth, and his eyes. He screamed, and the screaming became mere fodder for the light that threatened to consume him. The light sought out every part of darkness within Lim-Dûl and pulled it, painfully, from him.

  7. Then the light was gone as quickly as it appeared. The Jaya illusion, its talons extended, faded mere inches from Jodah, and Lim-Dûl staggered and crumbled in on himself, dark smoke now streaming around his head.

  9. The spell had done nothing less than exhaust Lim-Dûl as Jodah had been exhausted. It had been used by the Church to make spellcasters no more dangerous than mortal men, and Jodah felt very mortal at the moment.
