  1. Galei Tzahal, known in Israel by its acronym Galatz, is a nationwide Israeli radio network operated by the Israel Defense Forces. The station broadcasts news, music, traffic reports and educational programs to the general public as well as entertainment and military news magazines for soldiers. The network has one main station and an offshoot - Galgalatz - that broadcasts music and traffic reports 24 hours a day in Hebrew. The staff includes both soldiers and civilians. As of December 2013, the station is no longer broadcast via shortwave to Europe. There is still a livestream feed on the internet.
  2.
  3. Galatz started its transmissions on September 24, 1950, as a continuance of the Hagana transmission to the Jewish public during the Israeli War of Independence. Transmissions began with a trumpet blast at 6:30 p.m. followed by HaTikva, the Israeli national anthem. An improvised studio had been set up inside a former school building in Ramat Gan, with army blankets hung on the walls to muffle background noise.
  4.
  5. In 1956, its status was defined by the Israeli Broadcasting Authority law (paragraph 48). The Israel Defense Forces was authorized to choose its programming for soldiers, but programs for civilians had to receive approval from the IBA. During the station's formative period in the 1960s and 1970s, it was headed by Yitzhak Livni. In 1973, during the Yom Kippur War, Galatz was the first Israeli radio station to broadcast around the clock. In 1982, during the Lebanon War, the station collaborated with Israeli Educational Television (IETV). This wartime cooperation led to a daily news and interview show called Erev Hadash.

  7. For many years Galei Zahal broadcasts were mainly geared toward soldiers, including music programs conveying soldiers’ greetings and various broadcasts related to the IDF. The station was unique in that it incorporated soldiers serving in the regular army into journalistic positions, including reporters, editors, producers, news broadcasters, music broadcasters, musical editors, announcers, etc. Following the Yom Kippur War in 1973, the station began broadcasting 24 hours a day, expanding its broadcasts to include news broadcasts and current affairs programming. For years, it was the only Israeli station that continued to broadcast throughout the night.
  8.
  9. The station broadcasts a mix of classical, Israeli, pop and folk music, interviews, news, current affairs and documentaries, offering a its listeners a vast choice of programs and content. The station maintains its close links with the army through programs on military and defense affairs, special broadcasts for soldiers on the frontlines and entertainment for serving men and women. The station also devotes some of its programs to cultural, educational and social issues. News bulletins are broadcast every hour, and the headlines every half-hour. In between there are updates.
  10.
  11. Galatz’s various programs are presented by leading broadcasters, who are among the most highly esteemed journalists in Israel, alongside young, talented and energetic reporters, producers and editors. This combination makes Galatz a relevant, young and characteristically Israeli media outlet. In times of emergency, Galatz reporters cover events from forward lines, and forge a fast and reassuring link with the families at home - often in the form of broadcast personal messages from soldiers.

  14. Galgalatz is a popular Israeli radio station operated by Israel Defense Forces Radio. This is the second of two Israel Defense Forces-operated stations, while the first one is Israel Defense Forces Radio/Galatz. The station was established in 1993 with the aid of the Israeli Ministry of Transportation (the Israeli National Authority for Traffic Safety), and frequently broadcasts Traffic Safety messages.
  15.
  16. Galgalatz is the most popular radio station in Israel. The radio station receives extremely high ratings in Israel, especially amongst younger audiences. The percentage of 18-year-old listeners during 2006 was approximately 25%. The station broadcasters, primarily Israeli soldiers in service, have been trained as radio broadcasters at Galatz.
  17.
  18. The first station of the Israel Defense Forces, established in 1950 is called Israel Defense Forces Radio/Galatz which is an Acronym of Galei Tzahal. This second station was supposed to have traffic safety content in its broadcast, so the name had to express this uniqueness of the station. The word "Galgal" is Hebrew for wheel and symbolizes the connection to traffic. "Galgalatz" is a portmanteau of "Galgal" and "Israel Defense Forces Radio/Galatz". This name was created by the Israeli presenter and Feminist activist Merav Michaeli.
  19.
  20. Galgalatz broadcasting began on October 31, 1993, at 7:00 a.m., in a show called Medina BaDerech with Amir Asher. The station broadcast for 17 hours a day, beginning at 7 in the morning and until midnight. Within a short time, Galgalatz had made a name for itself amongst the Israeli media – its ratings had escalated from 4 percent to 13 percent, and Galgalatz's traffic reports were considered highly credible amongst the public, and were even recognized as legal evidence: A man sued for being late for a meeting used documentary of the station's traffic reports to prove he had indeed been stuck in a traffic jam, which were eventually accepted by the court as legal evidence.
  21.
  22. The broadcasting concept of Galgalatz was changed to target a specific audience, around the clock, with the intention and thought that such a theme of broadcasting would result in a larger, more loyal audience. At first Galgalatz turned to the 18- to 40-year-old audience. In practice, Galgalatz would eventually create an audience consisting mostly of 15- to 35-year-olds, amongst which the station was immensely popular.
  23.
  24. Every Thursday Galgalatz airs the "Official Music Chart Of Israel", which includes top 10 Israeli and international songs, based on the audience's choice on the station's website. The last Friday of the year, Galgaltz also broadcasts the Israeli annual international song chart. On 31 December 2019, Galgalatz aired the official hot 100 decade-chart.
  25.
  26. The station broadcasts primarily nonstop pop and rock music and traffic reports, and few content programs. The station broadcasts traffic reports every 15 minutes, providing regular and accurate real-time information on roadblocks, road accidents, traffic disruptions and road works. The editor and producers are responsible for verifying the truthfulness of the reports, formulating and entering them into the computer that is in front of the presenter. Galgalatz is the first station in the country, whose texts have been edited and read from a computerized system. At the top of every hour the station broadcasts a news bulletin.
