  1. Little Busters Refrain VN ending vs. Anime ending
  2.
  3. Anime timeline:
  4. So, the anime had Riki overcome his narcolepsy in episode 13. He goes into a sleep/dream state and is awakened by Rin and is able to save everyone in time. Riki realizes that it's more important to live and meet people than it is to regret losing them.
  5.
  6. Riki's Narcolepsy Explanation:
  7. Riki's narcolepsy is something he obtained after his parents died in a car accident. Riki subconsciously shuts himself away from all things terrifying, and falls asleep. It's a sort of uncontrollable mechanism that keeps him separated from the world. It mirrors Rin's own weakness, her shyness, that was caused by her own childhood trauma. Rin chose to shut herself away from everyone, though, and only opened herself up to the other main Little Busters: Kyousuke, Masato, Kengo, and finally Riki. So, basically, Riki's magical revelation that it's better to meet people and lose them than to wish to never be born is what cures him of his narcolepsy. Rin is cured of her weakness from all her strength in the dream world and through her own sort of revelation.

  9.
  10. VN Timeline:
  11.
  12. Riki and Rin wake up at the bus crash. You're given two choices: {Save them}, {Run away with Rin}
  13. If you try to "Save Them", you will get a narcoleptic attack on the bus and die, and you'll have to load a previous save and choose to "Run away with Rin."
  14. Basically, the game forces you to run away with Rin. Riki's narcolepsy is his weakness.
  15.
  16. So, you're unable to save the Little Busters. Rin has her "Last Dream" with Komari and the other girls, and they each bid farewell to Rin. The credits roll and Song for Friends plays.
  17.
  18. Riki wakes up in the hospital next to Rin, and after a few words between them, you hear a voice. The voice is presumed to be Kyousuke's consciousness still lingering in the world. It asks "Is that enough?"
  19. You can reply "It's enough" and the game will end there, with the Little Busters permanently dead.
  20. But of course, we want the true end, so Riki (we) say "It's not enough."
  21. Kyousuke replies "But you can't save them" and then Rin says "I'll get stronger too."
  22.
  23. So, skipping ahead a bit, Riki and Rin create a dream world. In this dream world, which is primarily Riki's, he visits his past and searches for his weakness. He goes back to the beginning of the Semester where he was chilling with Masato. His weakness isn't there. He goes back to when he met Kyousuke and the others. Not there either...
  24. He returns back to when his parents died, and there he realizes that that's where his weakness started from.
  25. He wishes to never be born, so that he'll never have to experience trauma.
  26. Riki's memories of the others, and Rin's consciousness, help to break him out of this pre-birth state, as Riki realizes that it's much much more fun to meet people and lose them than it is to regret being born at all.
  27.
  28. Now, there's a time loop back to the events of the dream world. It's implied that time can stop and possibly move backwards and screw around during dream world creation, and it's part of the "Key magic" of Little Busters.
  29. Basically, after Riki and Rin losing their friends, they're able to overcome their weaknesses that wouldn't let them save the Little Busters in the first place, and they re-awaken at the scene of the crash once more and are able to save them this time.
  30.
  31. After saving them, the school/beach epilogue proceeds.
