and spurred their horses to a furious charge. Girflet delivered such a blow that it pierced
his opponent’s shield, but his hauberk was strong and the mail held firm and the lance
flew into a hundred pieces. And the knight knew his business, and returned a ferocious
blow that pinned shield to arm and arm to body, and in full view of the king and all his
people – counts, dukes, kings, queens, ladies, maidens – he sent Girflet crashing to the
