  1. The paradox of Mr. Sheridan predicting doom upon those who curse, is that his prophecy of doom is in itself a curse upon them. A sender of a curse only suffers a curse in return, if someone curses them in retaliation, otherwise there is no return curse. It is the same with military conflict, a nation only suffers retaliation, if there is a retaliation. The notion that curses are returned to sender is itself a curse to discourage people from cursing for the purpose of maintaining public well being, however due to the fact people no longer fear hellfire for immoral deeds, it makes sense for people to curse those who commit immoral acts in order to encourage society to behave in a just manner. Due to the fear of hell no longer being in people, people may need to fear the curses of humans in order to be encouraged to behave in a good manner. For some ancient British curses see: the Carmina Gadelica, it is a book of British blessings and curses compiled 100 years ago from oral traditions. The prophecies of the bible against the enemies of Israel and the prophecies in favor of Israel, these are example of using prophecy to curse and bless, the prophecy was not an attempt to see into the future, rather it was an attempt to create the future. Curses can be both spoken or written. Written words carry vibrations just as do spoken words, books can even be used as talismans.
