I know your judgment is sound, Captain Okita, but why have Kira Yamato be your deputy commander?

I know he shares the same name as the hallowed Space Battleship so if nothing else, it makes for powerful propaganda. And I'm not exactly doubting your decision putting in a Born Winner as your right-hand man (or for that matter, him), but wouldn't even Kira think of ceding command to Amuro Ray? What did you eventually see in Kira that led you to promoting him?
