- In an alternative Victorian Age Gotham City, Batman begins his war on crime while he investigates a new series of murders by Jack the Ripper.
- In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and pits him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper.
- When I first read a summary of the plot, I felt a little weirded out. Batman set in a Victorian Gotham??? But the heavy atmosphere and especially the music score was great, and when you're dealing with such disturbing names as Jack The Ripper, it's definitely going to be.

It could easily be just a dark neo noir direct-to-video film, because aside from the character names and the fact that it's in Gotham nothing screams Batman.

The twists and turns through the film makes it a gripping murder mystery, though, so therefore I can't say that I disliked it. The final climactic battle was similar to the one against the Joker from "The Dark Knight Returns Pt 2", and since that's one of the greatest takedowns in my opinion, this one the highlights of the film.

If you can look past the odd setting I'll say it's an engaging murder mystery with some disturbing imagery to emphasize the gory nature of one of history's most insane madmen.
- That's how it started. Took almost NOTHING from the original comic, save that Jack the Ripper was the villain.

And then they made Jim Gordon the Ripper!?

Screw that noise. There's not enough hate in the world to express my contempt for this movie.
- Some originally speculated that "Batman: Gotham by Gaslight" would be merged with its sequel story "Master of the Future." However, it seems that the creative team at DC Animation has instead chosen to expand upon the original story with new scenes, characters and plot elements. Added characters include Selina Kyle; (Mrs.) Barbara Gordon; Harvey Bullock; Jason Todd; Hugo Strange; and Pamela Isley (as Ivy the Plant Lady). Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, originally published in 1989, is considered to be DC Comics' first Elseworlds story. "In ELSEWORLDS, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places--some that have existed, and others that can't, couldn't or shouldn't exist." - DC editorial copy. a5c7b9f00b
