Responding to my warning, Mr Ward immediately stepped aside, just avoiding the blade that arced upwards towards his stomach. Still it wasn’t over. Martin lurched to his feet and went after him. The Spook’s staff still lay out of reach on the ground where he’d placed it.
He took three rapid paces backwards, then halted so suddenly that Martin almost ran into him. His fist connected hard with the gamekeeper’s chin, and there was the sound of knuckles crunching against jawbone. The man fell like a sack of potatoes, unconscious before he hit the ground.
